DECKER’S LAST LAP PASS NABS BREWERTON VICTORY

Brewerton NY..7/18/97.. The "Franklin Flyer" Billy Decker cut away at the lead held by Tim McCreadie and made a last lap pass for the win in the 35 lap DIRT Modified main event Friday night at the Brewerton Speedway. Other winners on Avon Products of Oswego County and Brewerton Building Supply night included Don Alvord in the IMCA Modifieds, Troy Van Allen in the Dwarf Cars, and Bob Haws in the 4 Cyl. Super Stock division.

Roger Phelps and Dana Wagner lead the DIRT Modified field to the green flag with Phelps nosing out into the early advantage. Sixth place starting Bill Gill was quickly moving through the field and gained control of the second position on the third lap. Gill closed in on the high flying #3P and moved underneath for the lead on the 9th lap but the two locked bumpers sending them into a high speed spin off the back straight. Neither car was damaged but both had to restart at the rear of the field.

Tim McCreadie then inherited the lead and raced off to a straight-away advantage. Tim Fuller and Billy Decker, the 9th and 10th place starters respectively, sliced through the feature event field to find themselves in the top three on the 15th circuit.

The three professional drivers then hunted down the rookie big block competitor and closed in on his rear bumper with just 10 laps remaining. Then the true battle began. McCreadie and Decker road the cushion while Fuller dove underneath on the bottom line.

With two laps to go, Decker moved around the Fuller mount and with the white flag flying, spoiled the rookie's bid for a win and made the pass stick for his second Brewerton Speedway win of the season before a loud ovation from the grandstand.

Tim McCreadie held on for second with Fuller third Bob McCreadie and Pat Ward rounded out the top five positions.

Don Alvord took the lead in the IMCA Modified main event on the second circuit from Tony Finch and never looked back to record his first win of the 1997 season. Last weeks winner Sean Lias came home in the second position with Rob Keller, John Thayer, and last place starting Tom Horning rounding out the top five.

Troy Van Allen is riding a hot streak in the Dwarf Car division as he picked up his third win in the last four events. Van Allen took the lead on the 11th circuit from Frankie Doll and came home with the victory. Doll held on for the runner-up slot with C.J. Crawford, Chuck Weiland, and Jim Gray rounding out the top five.

The 4 Cyl. Super Stock main was a battle of two #11 machines as Bob Haws moved his eleven past the Gary Morrissette eleven with the help of a lapped car on the final circuit to record the victory. Bill Klinkowsky, Jim Olin, and Ray Chittenden rounded out the top five finishers.

Pit Stops… The companion Super Modified Stars on DIRT event was won by Bob Goutermout driving the Jim Gray owned Dwarf Car. Eight cars started the event, all rookies to the Dwarf Car division. Andy Powell, Jamie Moore, Danny Soule, Todd Stowell, Kenny Bell, Dave Trytek, and Howard Page rounded out the finishing positions. All drivers involved exited their machines with huge smiles on their faces and look forward to next years event. A special thanks go out to the Dwarf Car drivers who extended the use of their machines for this event.. Next week is the final Family Autograph night of the season sponsored by Team Haskins Oldsmobile-GMC Truck and Sav-On. Gates open at 5:30 with racing at 7:30 PM.
