McCREADIE RETURNS TO CCFS VICTORY LANE
WEEDSPORT, NY...Bob McCreadie returned to the Cayuga County
Fair Speedway victory lane last Sunday for the second time in
1997. Young 17 year old Jason Barney took top honors in the 20-
lap DIRT Sportsman main event. Shawn Lias won the special IMCA
modified 12-lap special. Both Barney and Lias were also visiting
the Cayuga County victory lane for the second time each in 1997.
The 35-lap DIRT Modified event began with an immediate
yellow flag when newcomer Danny West stopped in the second turn.
Todd Milton was recorded as the leader of that first lap. But on
the restart Steve Paine rocketed into the lead ahead of Jeff
Sykes, Tim Fuller and Jimmy Phelps. The car on the move was Bob
McCreadie, who immediately moved into fourth by lap four. Just
three laps later he was heading towards the leader Paine in hot
pursuit. Joining these two at the front of the pack was Tim
Fuller, who was using the high grove to his advantage.
On lap 19, McCreadie moved into the lead as Paine was
positioned wrong behind the lapped car of Butch Tittle. Fuller
also took advantage of Paine's predicament moving into second.
Paine quickly recovered and passed the lapped car to remain in
third. Fuller was now challenging McCreadie as he too used lapped
traffic to pull the master in closer. On lap 33 Fuller was able
to power past McCreadie for the lead, but Mccreadie quickly
recovered the front position as these two became entangled with
the lapped car of Troy Griffin. Griffin looped his car, bringing
out the yellow with just one lap remaining.
It had all come down to a one lap shoot-out. McCreadie was
up to the challenge and held on for the win. Fuller finished in
second followed by Paine, Scott Prentice and Joe Plazek.
In sportsman competition Greg Doust led the first seven laps
using the high line around the speedway. But Jason Barney
confirmed that the lower groove was faster, as Barney took the
lead on lap eight. Three cautions slowed the race. Jim Spano made
hard contact with the inside cement wall in the first turn on lap
five. The second yellow flew when Steve Gray and Vince Viatle
came together on the main straight. The final yellow came when
the fifth place running car of Gary Stage slowed and became
stranded in the pit entrance on lap 14.
Barney took the victory followed by Doust, Mike Button, Tim
Sears and Jim Gabriel Jr.
Shawn Lias led the entire 12-lap distance to claim the IMCA
stock car win. Don Alvord took second followed by John Thayer.
These three raced one-two-three all race long.
Walt Bond won the 40-lap enduro race. the finale for the
evening was the rain delayed Cayuga County fair Demo Derby from
Tuesday night.
This coming Sunday will find a complete program of
Modified/358-Modifieds, plus sportsman, enduros and a special
dwarf car event. Race time will be at 7 p.m..
