PLAZEK TAKES FOUR WIN OF YEAR AT WEEDSPORT

WEEDSPORT, NY..7/6/97....Joe Plazek won his fourth DIRT Modified feature of the year at the Cayuga County Fair Speedway last Sunday before a huge crowd on hand for the special appearance of the ESS Sprint cars. Jim Spano took top honors in the sportsman class, while Craig Keel made his homecoming complete with a victory in the ESS special.

Ray Bliss Jr, used his pole starting position to take the lead at the drop of the green flag for the 35-lap DIRT Modified main event. On lap five the yellow flew when Tim Fuller made contact with the fourth turn wall. This set up a restart with Bliss and Chuck Bower in the front row. Bower used this restart and took the lead. Bobby Varin took second from Bliss on lap eight. Just two laps later Jimmy Phelps and Geoff Plis made contact and looped coming out of the fourth turn.

This set up a restart that saw Bob McCreadie spinning into the infield after contact with Steve Paine. Both drivers tried to then settle their disagreement, resulting in both cars exiting to the pit area. McCreadie's car had to be towed. The restart saw Bobby Varin in a side-by-side battle with Bower. Varin gained the advantage on lap 15 inching out Bower for the lead. But the racing action was not done yet. On lap 24 Joe Plazek entered the picture as he challenged Varin for the front position. The mighty Canadian took the lead and pulled away to the victory. Varin lost second in the closing laps to Alan Johnson, who drifted to the outside of Plazek as the two exited the fourth turn. Plazek's victory was by inches. Varin Came home in third with Bower and Scott Prentice rounding out the top five.

Jim Spano took the 20-lap sportsman feature leading from the start of the event. Jim Gabriel Jr. came home in second with Jason Barney in third. Only one yellow slowed the race, that coming on lap 10 when Mike Conrow slowed to a stop in the fourth turn.

Craig Keel took top honors in the ESS sprint car event. He took the lead on lap six. Two yellows slowed the event both coming on laps 8 and 9. All but one of the 23 starters finished the race.

This Sunday will see a regular program featuring the modifieds, sportsman and enduros. Joining the night's action will be the IMCA modifieds in a special event. Race time is at 7 p.m..
