STEVE HALL PICKS UP HIS FIRST WIN OF THE SEASON AT CAN-AM

LAFARGEVILLE NY: 7/12/97...The summer racing season is here and a great crowd

was on hand to watch some quick and competitive racing in all six

divisions on Renzi Brothers Old Fashioned Meat Market and Haylor, Freyer

and Coon Insurance night. Tim McCreadie returned after his first turn

roll over last week to pick up the win in the 358 DIRT Modifieds, while

defending track champion Steve Hall finally found victory lane in the

DIRT Sportsman main, Rob Keller, Jeff Papin, Al Pitts and Rick Dusckas

all added to their 1997 win lists by picking up the wins in their

respective divisions.

Lee Gill jumped out to the early lead in the 358 DIRT Modified

feature from his front row starting spot and looked to pick up his second

win of the year at Can-Am. Gill held down the lead with first Rick

Wilson then Tim McCreadie taking a shot at the leader. McCreadie moved

around Wilson for the number two spot on lap 6 with Steve Roberts and Pat

O'Brien running right with the leaders. At the halfway point the top

five remained the same with Jeff Hoff and Tim Fuller getting into the

action. The two leaders entered a rough turn one and two on lap eighteen

and contact was made with McCreadie coming out as the leader. A caution

on lap 20 for a spinning BJ Vock tightened the leaders up but McCreadie

showed his strength and picked up the win over Gill, Wilson, O'Brien and

Fuller.

The DIRT Sportsman were brought to the starters green by Scott

Britton and Tim VanBrocklin. Britton was shown as the leader on lap one

but Steve Hall was the man on the move. Hall, who has been looking for

his first win of the season at Can-Am, moved around Britton and into the

lead on lap 4. Hall was also leading last weeks feature only to suffer

motor problems near the end of the 15 lap event but this week everything

looked to be going his way as he began to put some distance between

himself and the rest of the competition. The final caution flew on lap 8

for Dave O'Conner and Bill Mazuroski who tangled in turn one allowing

Britton and VanBrocklin to close in on the leader. On the restart Hall

again pulled away and went on to his first win of 1997 at Can-Am, Britton

held on for second with Mike Clark, George McIntyre and Jeff Narrow

completing the top five.

The IMCA Modifieds saw only 5 cars take the green in their 10 lap

feature. Ron O'Neil was hoping to become another first time winner in

'97 and raced into the early lead. O'Neil looked as strong as he has all

season as he and multi-time winner Rob Keller ran side by side for the

lead. The caution flew on lap 6 for O'Neil and Glen Erwin. O'Neil

suffered rear end damage when the two leaders made contact going through

turns one and two while Erwin came to a stop on the backstretch. Keller

went on for the win with Jim Graves, Erwin, Tom Horning, in the Debbie

Stevenson number 7, and O'Neil filling out the top 5.

Jeff Papin shot from his forth starting position to take the lead on

lap one of the 12 lap Late Model feature. Papin, who led until the last

turn of the last lap one week ago was hoping to hold on that extra

straightaway for the win on this night. Walt VanTassel and Scott Kelsey

chased Papin early in the event but Papin was going to be hard to beat.

A number of caution slowed the race but Papin pulled away on every

occasion. The win would go to Papin with VanTassel, Ben Tucker, Tom

Cormier and Ronnie McConnell completing the top five. A protest was

filed on the engine in the Tucker number 2 and everything checked out to

be legal.

The Street Stock feature had not completed one lap when a tangle off

of turn four sent Laurie Handschuh, Terry Ingersol and Tiger Chapman to

the pits with damage. Will Glass has been looking stonger every week and

was shown as the leader of lap one. The race would go caution free after

the lap one incident and Glass pulled away but Al Pitt, who was also

involved in the lap one accident was on his way to the front. Pitts

chased down the leader and on lap 4 moved around for the top spot. Glass

held on in second place until lap 10 when he was forced to the pits with

mechanical troubles. Pitts added to his win list in 1997 with Steve

Halladay having a great run to come across second, Nick Makuch, Steve

Rookey and Brian Salisbury finshed up the top 5. The Pitts number 88 was

protested after the race and found to be legal.

Former track champion John Eiss made his second visit to Can-Am this

season and showed everyone he has not lost his touch as he shot from

starting position number 9 to take the lead on lap one in the 10 lap

Economy Stock feature. Only one caution slowed the event and that came

on lap 3 for the car of Ken Partridge. Eiss opened up a huge lead after

the restart but he began to slow allowing Roger Bushey and Rick Dusckas

to move in on the leader. Dusckas got around Bushey on lap 7 and as the

cars entered turn one on the final lap Eiss slowed with problem and

Dusckas went around for the lead and the win, Bushey, Kyle Sharp, Mark

Baltz and Partridge were the remaining top five.

Next week will be Christmas in July and Free Kids night at Can-Am

sponsored by Log Mills Village Market and Pepsi-Cola. Gate will open at

5 with racing getting thegreen at 7pm, for more information call the
