McCREADIE SCORES AGAIN AT CANANDAIGUA, VITALE TAKES TOP SPORTSMAN

CANANDAIGUA, NY...6/28/97.....Bob McCreadie once again found himself a

top the finishing order at the Canandaigua Speedway last Saturday

evening. Vince Vitale took top honors in the sportsman main

event, while Tom Barron topped the street stock division. Scott

Knapp won the enduro race and Bruce Carmen from Shaftsberry,

Vermont, won the special old timers race.

The modified division looked to be off to a uneventful start

as they took starter Tommy Burton's green flag. But on lap five

the yellow came out when Chuck Hebing spun in the four turn. The

restart saw Charlie Donk slow on the speedway, setting up yet

another restart. This time seven cars became entangled in a front

straight accident, which saw Bryon Turner flip his J. G. Turner

Construction mount after being slammed full bore by Troy Griffin.

Turner emerged shaken but uninjured after this hard impact.

Bobby Varin, who started near the front continued to lead

until lap nine, when Gary Tomkins passed Varin on a restart after

Chuck Hebing looped his car again. Tomkins looked to have the

field covered until lap 20 when he slowed coming down the front

chute. He pulled his Bill Trout Lincoln-Mercury mount to the high

side of the first turn with a broken right rear axle. This left

Bobby Varin in the lead again.

The restart saw Varin slow down the back stretch on lap 21

with an overheating motor due to a faulty radiator cap. This left

Bob McCreadie to assume the lead. He was followed by Joe Plazek

and Alan Johnson. Johnson's fine run ended on lap 26 when his

front wheel went sailing towards the pit area. It landed

harmlessly but Johnson was done for the night.

McCreadie held off Plazek in the closing laps to win the 35-

lap feature. He was followed across the finish line by Plazek,

John Moravec, Vic Coffey and Pat Ward.

The 20-lap sportsman main event saw Vince Vitale take the

lead on the second lap and cruise to victory. However this

"cruise" was rough to say the least as six cautions slowed the

race. He was followed across the finish line by Lance Dusett,

Scott Ridley, Karl Comfort and Randy Holden.

The 15-lap street stock main event saw only one caution,

that coming on lap 11 when Foster Hughes slowed to a stop outside

of the third and fourth turns. Tom Barron passed Dave Aurand on

lap three to chase down the victory. Frank Guererri came home in

second followed by Aurand, Les Whyte and Rick Miller.

The Old Timers Classic Club was on hand featuring a number

of antique Big Cars and Midgets from the 30's and 40's. Bruce

Carmen won aboard a 1932 Big Car (sprinter). Pat Ward

participated in the old timers' event.

The 15-lap enduro only had to be red flagged once when Leroy

Lewis flipped in the fourth turn on lap nine. Scott Knapp claimed

the victory.

This Saturday will find the return of the ESS Sprint cars

for their annual July 4th weekend appearance. They join a

complete regular program featuring the modifieds, sportsman,

street stocks and enduros. Race time at the Ontario County

Fairgrounds in Canandaigua will be at 7 p.m. sharp.
