Don Ackner of West Sand Lake, NY ended Brett
Hearns win streak by driving to an impressive win in
the 30 lap Modified feature. Other winners on Saxton
Sign night were Art Collins in the Sportsman division
and Lorne Browe in the Street Stock class.
The Modified feature began with a series of five
caution periods over the first five laps. Maynard
Forrette gained the lead on the second restart as he
passed Al McCoy going into turn one. Don Ackner also
took advantage of the many restarts as he moved into
second place from his tenth place starting position by
lap three.
When things settled down on lap six Forrette was
the leader with Ackner second and Billy Decker in third.
The next several laps saw no change in the top three
positions however, Kenny Tremont, Dickie Larkin and Rob
Pitcher raced hard for spots four through six. Just
past the halfway point Brett Hearn broke into the top
five as the leaders began to pull away from the field.
The last ten laps saw the four cars of Forrette,
Ackner, Decker and Hearn in a very close formation as
Ackner pressured Forrette several times for the lead
while Decker and Hearn battled for third. The final two
circuits had the crowd on their feet as the top four
cars ran wheel to wheel but the order remained the same
at the finish. In a post race inspection Forrettes
engine was found to be illegal and the win was awarded
to Don Ackner. Billy Decker was second followed by
Brett Hearn, Rob Pitcher, and Dickie Larkin.
The Sportsman feature saw Wes Powell take the
lead on the initial green but, by the completion of lap
one Dave Sanchez moved passed Powell for the top spot.
Tony LaPorta and Art Collins were second and third by
lap three.
The first of only two caution periods came on
lap four, as several cars including George Marcus and
Bobby Hackel tangled in turns one and two. On the
restart Sanchez kept the lead with Collins moving into
second. The second caution flew three laps later as
early leader Wes Powell made contact with the second
turn wall. When racing resumed Chris Kokosa made a
great move on the inside to take over third position
behind Sanchez and Collins.
As the race reached the later stages Collins was
pressuring Sanchez for the lead with Bobby Hackel moving
into third position with a wild front stretch pass. With
three laps to go Collins made his move to inside of
Sanchez in turn one but Sanchez came right back as the
two drivers swapped the lead over the remaining laps.
Just when Sanchez had victory lane in sight he made
contact with a lapped car and slammed the fourth turn
wall. Collins slipped past and drove to his first win
of 1997. Bobby Hackel finished second with Kokosa, Bob
Chalmers and Hawley Smith rounding out the top five.
The Street Stock feature began with
Lorne Browe quickly taking the lead with an aggressive
move on the original start. As the race progressed
Browe and Bobby Blackburn held the top two spots as Jim
Langenback and John Routhier made their way into the top
five. Although Browe was never seriously challenged a
great race was taking place for positions two through
six. At the end of 20 laps Browe picked up his fourth
win of the year, followed by Blackburn, Langenback,
Routhier and Goldstein.
In other racing action Jim Dellea, Steve Hough
and Gary Virgilio were the Pure Stock winners with Dave
Fachini claiming victory in the rookie Street Stock
feature.
