HEARN CEMENTS FIFTH WIN AT THE VALLEY
WEST LEBANON, NY ...6/21/97...- Brett Hearn won the 30 lap modified
feature Saturday night at the Lebanon Valley Speedway.
This was the fifth win of the season for the Budweiser
#3 team. George Marcus also picked up his fifth win of
the year in the sportsman division on Fane Concrete
Night.
The modifieds had a tough time getting their
feature started on Saturday night. Several cautions flew
in the first five laps of the event. The most serious of
which happened on the initial green flag. Billy Decker
got collected up with Bobby Albert going down the
backstretch. Decker made hard contact with the inside
retaining wall and was done for the evening.
Early race leader Steve Devine crashed out of
the race on lap three, when the top three cars came
together in turn four. J. R. Hefner inherited the lead,
Eddie Marshall would find himnself second at this stage.
Hearn had worked his way up to fifth. Hearn would take
the third spot on the restart. Donnie Corellis had
another good run going, he was up to fourth by lap
three. Guy Sheldon started deep in the field and was up
to fourth by lap five.
Eddie Marshall took the lead from Hefner on lap
six. Hearn would take command of second on the same lap
and set his sights on the front running Marshall. Rich
Ricci Jr. had moved up to fifth by lap eight. The field
would bunch up after a yellow on lap eight. Hearn would
take the lead from Marshall on lap nine, while Sheldon
would grab third. Hearn would begin to pull away from
the rest of the field. Two good battles on the track
just before the halfway point. Sheldon and Ricci were
dueling for the third spot, while Mike King and Tremont
battled for the sixth position.
Hearn would hit lapped traffic by lap fifteen,
but it really did not allow Marshall to get any closer.
The top six cars would break away from the rest of the
field by lap 20. The only battle up front was for third
between Sheldon and Ricci. Heavy traffic was in front of
the leaders by lap 23, but Hearn masterfully passed the
slower cars. Corellis and Tremont would wage battle for
the fifth spot on lap 25.
The yellow flag would come out for the last
time on lap 28, allowing Marshall one more chance at
Hearn. But Hearn was strong to the challange and easily
won his fourth feature in a row and his fifth of the
season. Ricci got around Sheldon for third, Sheldon held
on for fourth and Donnie Corellis was fifth.
Bobby Hackel rocketed from fifth to first on the
green flag in the 20 lap sportsman feature. The yellow
would slow the field several times in the early stages.
George Marcus had worked his way up to fifth by the
second lap. Marcus would get tangled up with a car on
the lap two restart and fall back to tenth. Several
restarts and good driving allowed Marcus to get back up
to fifth by lap four.
Hackel ran away at the point, as Marcus took
third on lap nine. Marcus would grab at lap ten and set
his sights on Hackel. Hackel had almost a half straight
away advantage at this point. Slowly Marcus began to
chip away at Hackel's lead. Hawley Smith had a good run
going battling with Art Collins for third on lap 13.
Marcus would catch Hackel on lap 15 and pass him for the
lead going into the second turn.
Marcus would walk away from Hackel and cruise
home to his fifth win of the season. Hackel came home
second, with Hawley Smith third, Art Collins fourth,
and Butch Mc Whirt fifth.
Dan O'Connor was the early race leader in the
20 lap Street Stock feature. John Routhier made his way
up to third by lap four. Routhier would get as high as
second until mechanical failure hit on lap 17. Danny
Sanchez grabbed the lead from O' Connor on lap nine.
Robbie Speed would be fourth by lap eleven.
Sanchez would open a sizable advantage by lap
14. Speed would grab third on lap 17. Speed would
inherit second on the last lap as the #86 of Larry
Turner broke on the final lap. Sanchez won his second
feature of the season, Speed crossed the line second but
was DQ'ed in a post race inspection, making Adam Haas
second, Dave Streibel third, Al Blackburn fourth and
Jeff Sylvester fifth.
Pure Stock wins went to Eric Sbregh, Tom Sanchez
Jr. and Rob Yetman.
The Rookie Street Stock feature went to Bob
Fachini.
The IMCA Modified Feature was won by Henry
Tanner.
