TERRY HOUGH VICTORIOUS AT BLACK ROCK

DUNDEE,N.Y.....Terry Hough out of Gang Mills,N.Y., picked up his first win of the 1997 season in the Modifieds at the Black Rock Speedway last Friday night. Earl Harp out of Bath,N.Y. scored his third win of the season, and his second in a row in the Super-Stocks, as he pulled closer to point leader in the

division, Dale Welty. In the Pro-Stocks, Steve Clark picked up the win, and Brian Austin was victorious in the 4 Cyl. Stock division. Mark Hawkins was the winner in the Big Flats Manufactured Housing Feature for the Modifieds.

Terry Hough had his 1H Modified hooked up to the blue clay last Friday night at the Black Rock Speedway. In his heat event he was about to lap the tail-enders at the half way point. He began the 25 lap feature event in the 6th position, and was quickly up to third, chasing early leader Marty Conlon, and

George Rushlow. Hough and Conlon battled wheel to wheel for the early part of the event. Lap six saw Todd Milton spin his mount in turn three, Billy VanPelt, and point leader, Jeff Kappesser were also involved. VanPelt was able to continue, but Kappesser was out for the night with a broken front axle. As the race re-started, Hough took over the top spot, and was being chased by

Marty Conlon. Lap eight saw a pile up on the front straight as Mark Hawkins and Mike Jackson tagged, and Jackson slammed the front straight wall, and he collected Billy VanPelt, Steve Hartman, John Moravec and Geoff Plis. Hartman's mount was the most seriously damaged machine in this incident. None of the

drivers were injured. On the re-start, Hough remained out in front of the field and began to pull away. Meanwhile, Charlie Donk and Lyle Sherwood were starting to show their strength, and were battling for second and third. While all this great racing was going on up front, Ron White was on one of his patented charges from the back, and was racing with Walt Mitchell for fourth.

White started 26th, dead last on the field! As the race wore on to it's conclusion, Charlie Donk began to make up ground on Terry Hough, and as the checkers flew, it was Hough across the line for his first win of the season at Black Rock, Donk finished second, less than a car length behind, third was Ron White, who should be the new point leader, fourth was Walt Mitchell, and Lyle Sherwood rounded out the top five in a brand new Modified. Heat wins went to, Dave Machuga, Lyle Sherwood, Terry Hough, and Dylan Dewert.

In the Big Flats Manufactured Housing Feature, Mark Hawkins came away with the win, Roy Shields was second third was Tim Sebring, and the fourth and final qualifier was John Moravec in the Lincoln Fabricating #21. Two former feature winners failed to qualify in this event, but were put into the field due to their top five status in the points they were, Jeff Kappesser and Ron White.

Earl Harp, two time and defending track champion in the Super-Stocks, pulled down his third feature win of the season, and his second in a row. This win closed up the point battle between Dale Welty and Harp. Several car and driver changes took place in this division last week at the "Rock". Donnie Smith has taken purchase of the Art Ryder 76. Smith's normal ride the #23,

was driven by Bill Miller as his #82 had a blown motor. Shortly after the green flag was waved on this 20 lapper, Jeremy Potrzebowski spun in the first turn and scattered the entire field, everyone was able to continue. On the restart, the caution flag was out once again as Bill Miller had a flat tire on the 23. When the race finally got underway there was a great battle for the lead between Larry Knowles and Gene Balmer. While this race up front was going on, Dale Welty and Earl Harp were on the move up through the field. While Welty was on his charge, he was bumped down to the infield, and he hit one of the cement "turtles" and the front end of the Spencer's Big M 1-2-3 popped up in the air, inflicting heavy front end damage one the point leader's car, and putting him out of the event early. The race for the lead continued between Larry Knowles, Kevin Chilson, and Gene Balmer. Harp continued his charge to the front, and by lap 11 he was in third. Two laps later, Gene Balmer and Donnie Smith both spun, bringing out the yellow. On the re-start, Harp shot

into the lead, and went on for the popular win. Larry Knowles hung on for second, third went to Steve Perry, fourth was, Rob Conklin, and rounding out the top five was, Dave Fultz. Heat wins went to,Mike Brenning, Gene Balmer, and Larry Knowles.

Steve Clark picked up another win in the Pro-Stocks last Friday night at Black Rock. After starting in the tenth position Clark took the lead on the 11th lap , after battling with early leaders Mike VanDyke and Terry Wheat in the Wild One. Clark held on for the victory, point leader, Steve Brace came up from his 11th starting position to finish second, third was Terry Wheat,

fourth went to, Brian Hilliard, and rounding out the top five was, Mike VanDyke. Unfortunately, VanDyke was disqualified after a post race inspection, and received no points or money. Heats in the division went to, Steve Brace, Dan Smart, and Mike VanDyke.

Brian Austin earned a hard fought feature win in the 4 Cyl. Stock division after a race long struggle first with Kevin Young in the early portion of the event, and then with point leader, Tommy Stewart, Shawn Brace and Eddie Mills in the latter stages. The top four drivers formed a break away pack from the rest of the field, as Austin and Stewart raced for the lead, and Brace and Mills duked it out third and fourth. At the checkers it was Brian Austin with the win, Tommy Stewart held on for a tight second, third was, Shawn Brace, and Eddie Mills was fourth, while Phil Yaw rounded out the top five. Heats went to, Eddie Mills, Brian Austin, and Colby Peterson.

This Friday night at the Black Rock Speedway, it will be National Bank of Geneva Night, a regular four star program will be presented along with the kiddie rides that had to be postponed last week because of the weather and the late start. Gates will open at 5:30 with racing getting the green flag at 7:30 For more information on the 40th season of racing in Dundee, please call the speedway at(607)243-8686.
