STEVE HARTMAN, TIM SEBRING, EARL HARP, STEVE BRACE AND JOEL HUSTED WIN AT BLACK ROCK

DUNDEE,N.Y...6/27/97.....Steve Hartman, out of Woodhull, N.Y., picked up his first win

in the 358 Modified division at the Black Rock Speedway on National Bank of

Geneva Night. Tim Sebring was victorious in the Big Flats Manufactured Housing

Feature. Earl Harp out of Bath N.Y.,continues his winning ways, and picked up

his third win in a row in the Super-Stocks. Steve Brace put his number 37

Camero in victory lane in the rough and tumble Pro-Stock division, while Joel

Husted put his Rusty Wallace look-a-like machine in the winner's circle in the

4 Cyl. Stocks.

What a difference a week makes. Just ask Steve Hartman. Two weeks ago at the

Black Rock Speedway, the Woodhull,N.Y. veteran's Z8 Modified was a wadded up

mess setting in the front straight after having been involved in a big wreck

during the Modified feature. Last Friday night he was a few feet farther down

that same track posing for pictures with a checkered flag in his hand, having

won his first feature of the '97 season at the "Rock". He began the event in

the 7th position. At the green flag, Steve Kio jumped out to the early lead

with Chuck Kennison tucked in behind him. Modified rookie, Dave Machuga was

also in the running for the top spot early in this 35 lapper. On the next lap,

Kennison, assumed the top spot, as Dave Machuga and Marty Conlon were now

battling for second and third. As the race continued Kennison began to pull

away from the rest of the field. Moving up through the field now were Steve

Hartman, Billy VanPelt and Jeff Kappesser. A lap 12 caution closed up the

field, and three laps later Steve Hartman pushed his Z8 into the lead, while

Jeff Kappesser found some bite at the top of the speedway late in the event,

as he jumped into the second position with Billy VanPelt and Walt Mitchell in

tow. When the double checkers flew, it was Steve Hartman across the line

first, Jeff Kappesser re-took the point lead from Ron White with a second

place finish, third place went to Billy VanPelt, fourth was Walt Mitchell, and

rounding out the top five was Marty Conlon. Heat wins went to, Steve Kio,

Charlie Donk, Lyle Sherwood, and Fred Buckley.

In the Big Flats Manufacture Housing feature for the Modifieds, Tim Sebring

was victorious, the point leader going into this night of racing, Ron White

finished second. Third place went to a fast improving, former go-kart racer,

Aaron Jacobus. The fourth and final qualifier was Steve Mandell.

In Super-Stock racing action, Earl Harp, out of Bath,N.Y. copped his fourth

win of the year, and his fourth in a row. It was not an easy victory for the

man seeking his third consecutive track championship in this division. Point

leader Dale Welty, had his Spencer's Big M #1-2-3 in the top spot by lap five

after starting 15th. He was being chased in the early going by Kevin Chilson,

Earl Harp, Steve Perry and Rich Karlnoski. The top three were running cars

were running nose to tail, as Chilson and Harp chased Welty for the lead. Lap

15 saw Harp go to front and take the lead, as Welty began to fade slightly.

Harp was able to maintain his advantage and hang on for the popular win. Kevin

Chilson had one of his best finishes of the year, in second. Third was Steve

Perry, fourth was point leader, Dale Welty, and rounding out the top was Dave

Fultz. Heat wins went to, Dale Welty, Mike Carapella, and Steve Perry. The

consi went to Donnie Smith.

Steve Brace, out of Dundee,N.Y. pulled down another win in the Pro-Stock

Division last Friday night at the Black Rock Speedway, but he had to do some

real hard racing, and endure some adversity before enjoying the laurels of

victory lane. Brace began the event in the 10th starting position, and took

over the lead on a lap 12 re-start caused by Chris McCann losing the left rear

wheel, ending his strong run for the night. The adversity for Brace came when

the wheel from McCann's racer hit Brace's front window and roof area. The

roof was bent in the front, but Brace was able to continue. He was being

chased by the 21 of Steve Clark. Clark also had trouble early in the event, as

he spun, and had to re-start in the rear of the field. At the checkers it was

Brace across the stripe first by a fender ahead of a fast closing Steve Clark,

third was,Ralph Champion, fourth went to, Bryon Rhoads, and rookie Jason

Clugstone rounded out the top five. Heats went to,Chris McCann, and Jeff

Baroody.

In 4 Cyl. Stock racing, Joel Husted, out of Montour Falls,N.Y. picked up

his first win of the '97 season in his Rusty Wallace look-alike machine. He

took the lead on the third lap from his sixth starting spot on the grid. He

had a lot of company as the race progressed, as Ralph Warren, Tommy Stewart

and Eddie Mills were in hot pursuit. Lap 13 saw a rare occurrence, as Tommy

Stewart lost a tire and went off the fourth turn, and was out for the night.

With just two laps left to go, Husted continued to lead, and held on for the

win. Ralph Warren was a close second, third was Eddie Mills, fourth went to,

Shawn Brace, and Brian Austin rounded out the top five. Heat wins went to,

Joel Husted, Tommy Stewart, and Eddie Mills.

This Friday night the Black Rock Speedway will present one of the biggest

shows of the 1997 season, as Stewart P. Wilson and Unocal 76 present the Union

76 lap Prolong 358 Modified Syracuse qualifier, also on the card will be a

regular show for the Super-Stocks, Pro-Stocks, and 4 Cyl. Stocks. plus a huge

fireworks display set to music, presented by the Stueben Educators Federal

Credit Union. This special 4th of July show will be a big one, and you'll want

to get there early for a good seat. Racing gets underway at 7:30, and the

gates swing open at 5:30. Come and help celebrate 40 years of racing in

Dundee, and the birth of our nation. Black Rock Speedway is located on route

14A, just outside the village of Dundee.
