DECKER INCHES OUT PLAZEK IN A PHOTO FINISH
Brewerton N.Y.-Spectacular racing and high emotions were major
ingredients for another sensational night at the Brewerton Speedway.
Billy Decker won his first of the year in a photo finish over Canada Joe
Plazek in the featured Modified division while the emotions were dominant as the IMCA Modifieds presented the feature win
to the late Dean Hubbs. Dwarf Car and dirt rookie Greg Furlong raced from
twenty-first to first in the Dwarf main event and it was Gary Morrissette
capturing his first of the year in a highly competitive Four Cylinder feature.
Billy Decker has been a main contender throughout the season, but
this victory didn't come easily. Decker, starting inside of the seventh
row, took the lead on the twenty-fifth lap, but had to await the judges
call for the win. With three laps remaining Ray Bliss spun, was hit by Jim Phelps and Dana Wagner to set up a
shootout at the D-shaped dirt demon. Joe Plazek and Bob McCreadie were
breathing down Decker's back. The green flew, Decker went low while the
challengers went high. As the laps slipped down Decker bobbled at the north end of the speedway and Plazek dove
under. The pair raced down the front stretch with Plazek having an edge,
but Decker put the pedal to the floor and won by Decker won by less than
a half a wheel.
When asked about the win, Decker said, "I honestly didn't know if I
had won," but after a lengthy review of the videotape Decker did chalk up
the win in the Pennzoil 91. Early on Bliss held the early advantage with
his best run of the year. Tim Fuller worked his way to the point on the sixteenth circuit and was pulling away.
However, a yellow on the twenty-second lap bunched the field once again.
Decker was moving rapidly through the field and on the twenty-third
circuit Decker went past Bliss for the runner up spot. Decker then raced past Bliss, but Bliss bounced right
back. However, with ten laps left Decker went to the point.
Down the stretch it was Billy Decker capturing the win over Joe
Plazek, Bob McCreadie, Tim Fuller and Jack Johnson in a sensational
thirty-five lap feature event.
The IMCA Modifieds once again put on a sizzling race with Neil
Edgar, Rob Keller along with Sean Lias running in tandem throughout the
early stages. The race started with the pole position left vacant for
the late Dean Hubbs. Lias fell by the wayside with suspension problems, but Edgar and Keller continued to do battle.
However, the field slowed with one lap remaining and the drivers stopped.
The victory, prize money and points were awarded to Hubbs with his wife
Carol, sons Dennis and Jim along with other members of the family receiving the accolades in an emotional
victory lane.
Once again Greg Furlong put on an exciting run in the Dwarf
division. Furlong started twenty-first and had to overcome the best the
division had to offer. David Orr led the first lap, but by the second
circuit Eric Crawford was in front. Troy Van Allen was flying from deep in the field and by the ninth lap he was pacing the
field. Furlong raced to the front and took the lead on the thirteenth
only to lose it to Van Allen, but Furlong came right back. At the checker
it was Furlong winning his first of the year. Eric Crawford was second followed by Bill Teliska.
The Four Cylinder division saw Jim Olin, Bob Haws and Morrissette
lead at one time or another. Morrisette took over for good on the seventh
lap and he held off Olin, and Ken Klinkowsky rounded out the top three.
The main event was stopped when Phil Trimm spun, caught a rut and did a quick snap flip down the front stretch. He
escaped injury.
