Hayes And Johnson Win OCFS Modified Features

Middletown, NY: In only his second try in the Big Block Modifieds, Bob Hayes, Jr. of Valley Cottage, NY won the 30 lap CARQUEST Auto Parts Stores feature. The 1996 358 Modified champion here, failed to qualify in his opening attempt last week, but had it all together as he led wire to wire and won by a full straight over Jeff Heotzler.

In a feature that saw only one caution fly with five laps down, Hayes put his Four Star Transmission Teo-Pro car out front at the drop of the green, pull away from Chris Whitehead on the lap 6 restart, and cruise to his first big block win. Heotzler fought his way through the field and took 2nd on lap 14, narrowed the gap slightly on Hayes over the second half of the feature, but couldn’t run down the high flying Hayes, Frank Jashembowski held off Danny Johnson for 3rd. Whitehead was 5th.

The 25 lap 358 modified feature saw Danny Johnson of Rochester, NY outrace Bud Christmann on a lap 21 restart to record his 21st career small block win here- Johnson, aboard the Freightliner Trucks of Newburgh Troyer car, now joins Robbie Green in 4th place on the all time win list. Christman, Gerry Higbie, Ton Hindley and Billy Eggers were next across the line,

The 15 lap DIRT Sportsman feature found John Ferrier of Middletown, NY winning his first feature in the class as he has moved down from the 358 modifieds. His win was tainted however as he lost track points and purse money when he came up light on the scales in a post race weigh in, First year OCFS runner Peter Booth was second followed by Mark Lorenzo (who also lost points and money when he was declared light), Jim Sorenson, and Jake Schlagel.

The all time feature win leader in the Street Stocks, Scott Kehr of Hillsdale, NJ won the 12 lap Novice class feature after a spirited run with second finishing Rocky Picciano. Cliff Tinnelly of Mt. Hope, NY won for the second straight week in the 10 lap Rookie feature- There was no Dash For Cash event.

The first enduro of the season will take place this Saturday night as racing begins at 7pm.
