Hearn, Browe, Deak, Yetman and Hughes Victorious on Opening Night

Brett Hearn took the lead halfway in the 30 lap modified feature on Saturday night and cruised home for his first win of 1997. The street stocks were also on hand on Goewey night and Lorne Browe was the victor. The rookie street stock race was won by Bill Deak with pure stock wins going to Rob Yetman and Bill Hughes.

Brian Berger took the lead on the start of the modified feature. Berger held the top spot for the first fifteen circuits. Meanwhile Brett Hearn, Billy Decker and Kenny Tremont made their way toward the front. Only three caution flags would fly on this night. The most serious yellow came out for the #93 of Gary Waters. Waters got turned around in turn two and was hit hard by another racecar. Lap ten, saw Hearn catch Berger and began to challenge the Pittsfield, Mass driver. Lap 13 almost proved tragic for last years champ, Kenny Tremont. Dickie Larkin broke going down the backstretch and Tremont did a masterful job of avoiding Larkin's disabled racecar.

Hearn would pass Berger going into turn one just after the crossed flags had been shown. Billy Decker and Kenny Tremont would battle for the third position for the final five circuits. Tremont would grab the third spot away from Decker with two laps to go. Hearn was able to walk away from Berger and took the checkered flag a good straightaway ahead of second place. Brian Berger would hold on for second Tremont was third, Decker fourth, and Donnie Ackner fifth. The hard charger of the race would have to be the #97, of Donnie Ackner. Ackner qualified through the consolation event and started nineteenth on the grid. Ackner was able to move up to finish in the top five.

The street stock feature was slowed by five caution flags. There were also four lead changes in the event. Robbie Speed was the early race leader. Speed would lose the lead on a lap three restart to Lorne Browe. By halfway the top six had checked out from the rest of the pack. Lap 11, Speed got spun coming off turn two. He only lost two spots in the altercation. Speed would get back to second and challenge Browe for the top spot with five laps to go. Browe was able to hold off the challenge and win his first career street stock race, Robbie Speed was second, Jeff Sylvester third, Rich Crane was fourth and Dave Streibel was fifth.

49 cars made up the modified heat races with 17 sportsman cars in attendance also There was a full field of street stock and pure stock division cars. Next week will be opening night for the sportsman and IMCA modifieds, plus all classes will be on hand for Ronnies Cycle night. Thanks to Ed Bittig Jr. for the recap of the evenings races.
