McCREADIE WINS BUMP AND RUN AT WEEDSPORT
WEEDSPORT, NY..."I don't deserve this victory, Tim (Fuller) does," stated a somewhat subdued Tim McCreadie in victory lane. "I feel just terrible about what happened." McCreadie was referring to the contact between himself and leader Tim Fuller on lap 97 that sent Fuller into the outside fourth turn wall, and out of the race. This 100-lapper had been rescheduled from May 30 when rains washed out the Hall of Fame races.
Joe Beyea picked up a victory in the crash filled DIRT Sportsman 20-lap main event.
The 100-lap Advance Auto Parts Super DIRT Series saw thirty cars take the green flag, with Tim Fuller taking the lead from his pole starting position. Fuller held a three car lead over Kenny Tremont, Danny Johnson, Ron Smoker and Brett Hearn. Johnson began to challenge Tremont for second on lap four, finally making his pass after laps of side-by-side competition on lap nine. With this battle for second being staged, Fuller was able to pull out to a fifteen car lead.
Lapped traffic became an issue on lap 18. Fuller would use the traffic to help keep Johnson at bay. Tremont fell back to fourth after Hearn passed him on lap 21. Billy Decker took fourth from Tremont just one lap later. However the most dominate car on the track, outside of Fuller, seemed to be local runner Tom Sears Jr.. Sears passed Tremont for sixth on lap 25 and then took off after Decker. Decker was in his own battle with Hearn for third.
Sears passed Hearn on lap 30 and chased down Decker for third on lap 51, as the entire race up to this point was run under green flag conditions. One lap later Tim McCreadie made his presents known by grabbing fourth from Decker.
On lap 54 the yellow flew as Jack Johnson came to a stop at the entrance to pit road. This put Johnson, Sears, McCreadie and Decker on the back bumper of leader Tim Fuller for the restart. Fuller pulled away as Johnson battled Sears. Sears completed his pass for second on lap 59 and tried to chase down Fuller. But seemed that Sears was running out of tires on the slick surface.
McCreadie drew new life and caught Sears in traffic. He used the lapped car of Jeff Rudalavage to trap Sears and moved his way into second. Now he too tried to chase down Fuller. McCreadie began to turn in lap speeds nearly a half second faster then Fuller. By lap 86 he was on Fuller's rear bumper.
First McCreadie tried the high line, but Fuller was able to maintain his speeds using a lower grove. Then, the lapped car of Darryl Ruggles broke in front of the leaders, sending them scurrying in all directions. McCreadie continued to dog Fuller. Then on lap 97, McCreadie dove low in between the third and fourth turns. He made contact with Fuller as they maneuvered through the fourth turn. Fuller's car drifted high and hit the concrete outside wall with a flush sideways slap, breaking his rear axle and bending the right rear wheel. He limped into the pit area.
McCreadie now found himself the leader and winning the race. Sears finished second followed by Johnson, Hearn and Decker. Fuller ended up three laps down in 21st position. Following the race Fuller was no where to be found for comments.
The J.E. Pistons fast timer for the race was Steve Paine, his first fast time of the year. Paine turned in a 16.068 second lap for a speed of 84.018 MPH. Three cars were disqualified from time trial results due to weigh-in problems following their qualifying runs; Tim McCreadie, Ray Bliss Jr. and Tyke Morris. These three cars had to start at the back of their heat races. Billy Decker won the Exiss Trailers Dash.
The 20-lap Sportsman feature saw the first half of the race a crash-fest. Jeremy Pitcher was the early leader of the race, but lost the front spot after one lap to Bob Henry Jr. as two of the first three laps were run under caution.
Joe Beyea took the lead on the lap three restart as Henry drifted backwards to fourth behind Beyea, Jim Bowman and Eldon Payne Jr..
Walt Chyrywaty brought out the yellow on lap seven when he spun in the first turn. With the yellow out both Steve Gray and Eldon Payne came together on the front stretch.
On the restart new comer Rick McCready looped his number 2M in the first turn. Another try at a restart saw second place runner Jim Bowman lose a wheel off his car, allowing Greg Doust to take over in second. A ragged start caused damages to Chris Ostrowsky's number 29 on lap 10 for the final yellow of the race.
Beyea led Doust over the final ten laps of the event to take the victory. Tom Juhl finished third followed by Russ Hefti in fourth and John Plumb in fifth.
The next Advance Auto Parts Super DIRT Series takes place on Sunday, July 8 at Cornwall Motor Speedway in Canada. The following night the series moves to Drummondville for round 12.
Big Block racing at Cayuga County Fair Speedway continues Sunday, July 15. On tap will be the DIRT Modifieds and Sportsman cars, plus a Pit Stop Convenience Stores Enduro. Added to the race card are the popular ESDCA Dwarf cars. Race time at Cayuga County will be at 7 p.m. sharp.
