Darrin Schuler, Gary Roberts, and Rich Watson Share ARP Limelight

Despite rain all around the race track Afton Raceway Park managed to complete all but 7 laps last Friday night. Twenty-four Modifieds, 29 Street Stocks, and 40 Four Cylinder Street Stocks filled the pits for the night's events.

Defending 358 Modified-Sportsman champion Darrin Schuler picked up his first win of the 1992 season. Starting in the third spot Schuler grabbed the lead from George Lewis on a second restart. Meanwhile, Mark Terry had started to move through the field from his tenth starting spot. By lap 7 Terry moved the 3M into third spot and was challenging Bill Tittle for second. J.R. Hurlburt had moved into fourth and Joe Sellars up to fifth at this point.

Terry and Hurlburt both snuck by Tittle on a ninth lap restart and Terry set out after Schuler. The 3M battled with Schuler's 74 to take the top spot. On a lap 12 restart Schuler pulled under Terry down the backstretch to take the lead. Joe Sellars and Jamie Paige moved through the field, with Sellars taking third and Paige fourth. Bill Tittle held onto fifth.

The night came to an end for Mark Terry when he rolled to a stop on the backstretch. This put Joe Sellars in the second spot to challenge Schuler for the win. The two battled for the top spot while Bill Tittle, Jamie Paige and Mike Clapperton fought for the remaining top five positions. When the dust settled at the finish line, Darrin Schuler came home the winner, Joe Sellars second, Bill Tittle third, Mike Clapperton fourth, and Jamie Paige fifth.

In the Street Stock feature Gary Roberts outdueled Gary Card to take his second win of the season. Starting in 18th and 13th positions the two moved through the field quickly and by lap 9 were fighting for the lead. Running side-by-side for a lap and a half neither driver was able to grab any substantial advantage. Roberts would go high into the turn and drop down low exiting the turn and gain a small advantage, then Card would grab it back in the next turn.

On the 15th lap Roberts pulled into the lead and held on to take the win in a hard fought contest. Card finished second. Al MacRabie fought back through the field, after being sent to the rear early in the race, to finish third. Marty Goodwin took fourth with Tim French fifth. Rich Watson took the four Cylinder Street Stock feature in a rain- shortened event. Stopping the race after eight laps, due to the rain, gave Watson his first win of the season. Jake Slack took second, Chris Sherman third, Randy Haynes fourth, and Jim Weaver fifth.
