First Time Winners at ARP Ron Ford, Les Streeter, and Gary Smith

A fine field of cars and a cooperative weatherman gave the fans at Afton Raceway Park an exciting race card on Reynolds Auto Supply night. Twenty-eight 358 Modified-Sportsman, 24 Street Stocks and 42 Four Cylinder Street Stocks filled the pits under an overcast sky that threatened rain all evening. The hearty fans that came out were treated to three first time winners.

358 Modified-Sportsman point leader Ron Ford took his first feature win of 1992. Taking the lead from defending track champion Darrin Schuler on the sixth lap, Ford started to pull away from the field. After a caution, Chuck Kennison split Schuler and Wink Hinkley coming out of turn 2 to charge into second.

Moving up to challenge Ford for the lead, Kennison dropped low coming out of turn 4. Ford pushed high to the front stretch wall and Kennison out-motored him down the straight away for the lead. Kennison then rode high in turn 2 and Ford hugged the inside and out- powered the 9X to retake the lead.

Mark Terry had moved up to third, with Bill Tittle fourth and Wink Hinkley fifth. Ford held off Kennison's challenges for the rest of the race to take the win. Bill Tittle moved past Mark Terry for third with Jamie Paige finishing fifth.

Les Streeter, Jr. picked up his first win of 1992 after a door-handle- to-door-handle battle with early race leader Denny Smith.

Steve Wetherbee jumped to an early lead until Pat Ward worked by on the second lap. Denny Smith then took the lead when Ward's X3 lost a wheel. This moved Streeter into second, Jay Renner third, Dan Roe fourth, and Tim French fifth.

On lap 13 Streeter was able to get by Denny Smith to take the lead. Gary Card moved into the battle by passing Smith down the back stretch on lap 16. Card pressured Streeter but was unable to get by and settled for second. Smith held on to finish third, Tim French took fourth, and Al MacRabie fifth.

After coming one turn short two weeks ago Gary Smith picked up the win in the Four Cylinder Street Stock division. Taking the lead on a restart when Mike Oliver got out of shape hitting leader Jake Slack, Smith cruised to the win. Slack was able to regroup to finish second. Last week's winner Rich Watson was third with John Kostbar fourth and Tom Seymour fifth.
