RACE RECAP
A capacity crowd jammed the grandstand at the New Afton Raceway on a beautiful evening to witness double features in both the Sportsmen and Modified divisions. Mitch Gibbs walked away the big winner taking both ends of the Modified double header while Dave Calaman took the rained out portion of last weeks Sportsmen event, with Jerry Northrup taking the nightcap laurel. In the other rained out features from last week, Russell Hendrickson, Jr. took the Four Cylinder feature win with Jim Giles taking the Pure Stock winners purse. In the regularly scheduled Street Stock feature, Tim French took his second victory of the season.
In the opening Sportsmen feature Steve Eldred took the early lead but held on for only one lap as Dave Calaman assumed control on the second lap. By the ninth lap Jerry Northrup had moved into second with Billy Walters holding on to the third spot. Lapped traffic gave Calaman some breathing room until lap 12 when Northrup cleared the slower cars. Northrup gave chase to the flying 13Z but was unable to reel him in. Taking his first Sportsmen win at the New Afton Raceway was Dave Calaman. Jerry Northrup finished in second with Billy Walters third, Jim Gabriel, Jr. fourth and Wink Hinkley fifth.
JR Hurlburt jumped out to the early lead in the make up Modified feature. Hurlburt held on to the top spot until the ninth circuit when Loren Holland, Jr. moved into the lead. Holland looked strong in the top spot until he spun out of turn two giving Mitch Gibbs the lead on the 17th lap. Gibbs opened up a comfortable lead, holding off Chuck Akulis for his second win of the year. Mark Terry finished in third with Robbie Green forth and Jeff Walton in fifth.
In the make up Four Cylinder feature Jeff Burnett took the lead from Earl Krom and held on until lap five when Bill Bailey took over the first position. Bailey ran at the front for two laps when Russ Hendrickson, Jr. took over the lead. Rich Rought made a pass for the lead on the last lap but was set back three spots for rough riding giving the win to Russ Hendrickson, Jr. Finishing in second was Bill Bailey with Jamie Hurlburt third, Rich Rought fourth and Brad Jones fifth.
In the Pure Stock main Jim Giles took the lead and was never challenged in taking the win.
Finishing in second was Don Hart with Bill Bunzey third, Stan Macomber fourth and Mike Oliver
fifth.
In the regularly scheduled Street Stock feature Jeff Winchester took the early lead at the drop of the green. Butch Klinger moved into the top spot on lap three. Klinger relinquished the lead to Marty Goodwin on the fifth lap. At the halfway point Goodwin maintained the lead over Gary Card, Butch Klinger, Jeremy Smith and Skip French. On lap 11 Tim French moved into the top five and was running second by the 14th lap. As the leaders moved through turns one and two the rear end of Goodwins 55 came around putting Tim French in the lead. French help off Jeremy Smith to take his second feature win of the year. Skip French finished in third with Herm Slack fourth and Gary Card fifth.
In the Sportsmen main event Dave Rosa ran out front for the first seven laps until Jerry Northrup took over the number one spot. Northrup held off a charging Gary Allen to take his second Sportsmen feature of the year. Gary Allen finished second with Wink Hinkley third, Jim Gabriel, Jr. fourth and Danny Ballard fifth.
The final race of the evening was the Modified feature and Steve Cummings again took the early lead. Gibbs moved into the lead on lap nine and was never challenged. At the finish it I was Gibbs with his second win of the night and his third of the year. Mark Terry was second with Chuck Akulis third, Robbie Green fourth and Mike Clapperton fifth.
