RACE RECAP-

The New Afton Raceway continues to see new faces in Victory Lane as Mike Clapperton and Jerry Northrup each won features last Friday night. Clapperton took the win in the Modified feature with Northrups win coming in the Sportsmen main. Marty Goodwin became the first repeat winner in the Street Stock division with Russ Hendrickson, Jr. taking his third win in the Four Cylinder division with Jim Cornell taking his second Pure Stock win in a row.

Mike Clapperton capitalized on his pole position starting spot to take his first win in 1995. Taking the lead at the drop of the green, Clapperton held the lead relatively unchallenged through the first six laps. It was at this point that Robbie Green moved into second and began to reel in the leader. As Clapperton slowed through lapped traffic Green and Chuck Akulis caught up with the leader and Green made the pass for the lead on lap 16 coming off turn 4. On the 18th circuit Clapperton got underneath Green through turns one and two and out raced Green to regain the lead. As Clapperton began to pull away, Akulis moved along side of Green and the two point leaders raced for second. With five laps to go Akulis moved into second but was unable to catch the winner Mike CLapperton. Chuck Akulis finished in second with Robbie Green third, Loren Holland, Jr. fourth and Seth Gano fifth.

In the twenty lap Sportsmen feature polesitter Dave Calaman jumped out to the early lead. Wading through the caution plagued first three laps, Calaman held off both John Terry and Olin Renwick. By lap seven, Jerry Northrup had moved into second place and began to challenge Calaman for the lead. On the very next lap, Jim Gabriel, Jr. moved past the green Z13 to take over second place. At the checkers it was Jerry Northrup taking his first New Afton Raceway Sportsmen feature win with Jim Gabriel, Jr. second, Dave Calaman third, Mike Frederick fourth and Greg Hoke fifth.

In the twenty lap Street Stock feature, Denny Smith took the lead at the drop of the green until Marty Goodwin moved into the lead on the fourth lap. On lap ten Butch Klinger moved up to challenge Goodwin for the lead. Klingers shot at the win would end after a fourth turn tangle sent Klinger's #9 to the pits on the 14th lap. In the restart, Jim Crawn, making his New Afton debut, pulled along side Goodwin's #55 but was unable to make the pass stick as Goodwin pulled away to take his second win of the year. Crawn held on to finish second with Gary Card third, Skip French fourth and Denny Smith fifth.

Brad Alger held the lead for the first lap in the fifteen lap Four Cylinder feature event. Dennis Kirk took over on the second lap until Bill Bailey grabbed the top spot on lap three. Bailey held the lead until Russ Hendrickson, Jr. pulled into the lead on lap 7. As the race progressed it turned into a three car battle with Rich Rought joining in the the fun. At the checkers, Russ Hendrickson took his third feature win of the year with Bill Bailey second, Rich Rought third, Jamie Hurlburt fourth and Brad Alger completing a strong run in fifth.

Week two of the Pure Stock feature brought the same result for Jim Cornell, Jr. as the Brooktondale driver took his second consecutive feature win in the ten lap main event. Taking the lead from Andy Clement on the third lap, Cornell was never challenged. At the line, it was Cornell with the win, Lefty Voorhis second, Andy Clement third, Lisa Alcorn fourth and Curt Sherman fifth.
