RESULTS CAN AM SPEEDWAY
ON 7/11/87
Defending track champion and current point leader Doug "Ox" Carlyle returned to his winning ways last Saturday at the Can Am Speedway in LaFargeville, N.Y. Kevin Martin moved from his front row starting spot to lead the first four laps and was followed by John Marcinko and Laurent Ladoceur. Meanwhile Marcel LaFrance, Doug Carlyle and Dave Heaslip were working themselves through the pack and by the fifth lap Marcel had taken over fourth spot, with Steve Roberts fif- th and Charlie Wilbur sixth. Marcel then lived up to his nickname of the hammer and within the next three laps passed Ladoceur, Marcinko and Martin to take over the lead. By lap fourteen, when the first caution came out, Marcel had been able to open up almost a straightway lead over Kevin. On the restart Marcel's rear time blew causing him to almost lose control of his modified in the second turn. This then set up Doug Carlyle to bonzai his way pass Kevin and take over command. Dave Heaslip then brought the fans to their feet as he ran the ragged edge passing cars on the outside of the corners to move himself from seventh to second in just two laps. Meanwhile Marcel, who had rejoined the pack after a quick tire change, was rapidly making his way back up to the front. With the help of two more cautions he was able to rejoin the leaders on lap twenty of the twenty five lap race. Marcel showed that he was easily the fastest car on the track as he almost was able to pass both Dave and Doug going into the first turn with only two laps remaining. But the opening that he expected didn't materialize and he was forced to jam on the brakes and go high out of the groove. When the checkered came down it was Carlyle followed by Heaslip, Marcel, Charlie Wilbur and Bill Monroe.
In the Late Model division Dave Cole was the early leader followed by Danny Bray and Rex May. On the second lap of the fifteenth lap main Rex was able to slip by Danny and start his chase of Dave. On the following lap Dale Jewett and Rick Ferguson tangled coming out of the fourth turn, bringing out the only red flag of the evening. On the restart Dave and Rex ran side by side through the first and second turns with Dave edging into the lead by the time the cars were half way down the back stretch. Meanwhile Dave Carr and Niles Busler were starting to make their presence felt as they moved into third and fourth positions resepectively. Niles then came alive and within two laps had placed himself into second spot. Cole then got high coming out of the fourth turn allowing Niles to easily slip by and take over the lead. Dave Carr then got by coming out of the second turn, moving himself into the runner up spot. Guy Marcinko then started becoming a factor as he slipped into third spot and onto Dave Carr's back bumper with only five laps remaining. Guy appeared to have the fastest car on the track as he moved passed Dave and set his sights on Niles with only two laps remaining. But there wasn't enough time for Guy to make an attempt at passing Niles. When star- ter Randy Hunnyeman's checker flag waved it was Niles followed by Guy, Dave Carr, Bobby Thurston, Jr. and Dave
Cole. In the Street Stock Division Bill Gill and Carl Hoffecker had the fans on the edge of their seats as the two ran bumper to bumper when, with only a few laps remaining, Carl momen- tarily lost the handle coming out of the fourth turn, narrowly missing the front stretch wall. At the finish it was Bill followed by Carl, Randy Widrick, Jeff Bannister, in his best finish of the
season and Tom Virkler. Next Saturday night it is Parkview Auto Nissan, Mazada, Isusu night at Can Am Speedway. In addition the Mid-State Antique Stock Car Club will also be on hand.
