EDDIE MARSHALL ENDS SEASON OF FRUSTRATION WEST
LEBANON, NY...On Saturday night at the Lebanon Valley Speedway, Modified driver Eddie Marshall of Pound Rigge, NY ended a season of frustration by winning the 30 lap Modified feature. The exciting racing program was spon- sored by Snap On Tools. "This has been a long time com- ing." beamed Marshall in victory lane. "The crew has been working real hard and the car was really working super tonight." At the drop of the green front row starting Don Ackner of West Sand Lake, NY jumped into the lead. The race struggled through the first 6 laps as there were 4 cautions. The fourth caution was on lap 6 for leader Don Ackner when he charged into turn 3 only to find Chris anore of Lanesboro, MA sitting sideways. Ackner clipped too early. Marshall inherited the lead as he was pursued by too ended up in the wall ending a promising evening ped Tommy Corellis of East Greenbush, NY, Sparky Lowe of Roxbury CT, and Rich Ricci, Jr. of New Paltz, NY. Lowe soon dropped back giving third to Ricci. Dickie Larkin of Great Barrington, MA, Kenny Tremont of West Sand Lake, NY, and Billy Decker of Franklin, NY all quickly moved to the front. Marshall and Corellis were all holding their positions without anyone challenging, but Larkin, Tremont, and Decker were in a competing battle for fourth to sixth. they often ran 2 or 3 abreast. Larkin managed to hold off The 3 drivers were Tremont until Decker slipped past Tremont with 4 laps to challenging each other at every turn as go. Decker was too late to challenge Larkin. While Larkin, Tremont, and Decker battled, Marshall was having no trouble holding off Corellis and Ricci through 2 more cautions and lapped traffic. When the checkered flag waved, it was Marshall taking his first win of 1995 over Corellis, Ricci, Larkin, and Decker. Modified heat race winners Eddie Marshall celebrates win #1 for '95 with the Snap-On-Tools reps.
Sparky Lowe and Rich Ricci, Jr. In the 20 lap Sportsman feature, Hawley Smith of Croton Falls, started on the front row and charged into the lead at the drop of the green. By lap 7, Smith was pulling away from second running David Sanchez of Schodack, NY. Brian Gerrain of East Chatham, NY and Art Collins of Chatham, NY were running wheel to wheel challenging each other for third place. They soon caught up with Sanchez and as they tried to decide who should run second, third, and fourth, this allowed Smith to stretch out his lead. When Gerrain finally got by Sanchez for second on lap 17, Smith had a lap lead and was first under the checkered flag in front ofGerrain, Sanchez, Collins, and Chris Kokosa of Ludlow, MA in fifth. Sportsman heat race wins went to Jim Chenette of East Schodack, NY and Hawley Smith. Guy Tompkins of Catskill, NY was the Sportsman consolation race winner. The 15 lap Street Stock feature saw Bob Duzlak, Jr. grab the lead from his front row starting position. Danny Sanchez of Rensselaer, NY ran second and through the help of 2 cautions during the first 5 laps, he was able to stick close to Duzlak. The top 5 cars ran in a tight formation and on lap 6 Mark Webb of Rensselaer, NY, Lou Cardella of Nassau, NY, and Jim Langenback of Pittsfield, MA all charged past Sanchez, pushing him back to fifth. Langenback worked his way up to second on lap 8 but the very next lap Langenback and third running Mark Webb both spun in turn 4. This handed second to Cardella. Cardella wasted no time as he ducked inside of Duzlak in turn 2 to take the lead on lap 10. Duzlak didn't last much longer as he had car trouble on lap 11. Cardella first held off Jeff Sylvester of Clarksburg, MA then Jay Casey of Canaan, CT over the last 4 laps as he just beat Casey to the checkered flag by one car length. Third was Sylvester, fourth went to Kevin Ward of Hyde Park, NY, and fifth was Danny Sanchez. Dave Striebel of Dalton, MA and Mark Webb took the exciting heat race victories. In the first Rookie Street Stock feature, Chris Crews of Adams, MA shot past Herbie Hall of Schodack, NY on lap 2 to take the lead. Crews quickly opened up a big lead and was running away with the race when the only caution in the 10 lap race came out on lap 9 when Steve Kastner of Cairo, NY lost a wheel. On the last lap, Crews held on and crossed the finish line first, but a post race inspection found a rules violation and he was disqualified. This gave the victory to Tom Law of Chatham Center, NY, second was Joe Mabb, Jr., of Styvesant, NY, third went to Herbie Hall, fourth was Tony Zullo, Jr., of Albany, NY, and fifth was Art Sousa of West Sand Lake, NY. In the second 10 lap Rookie Street Stock feature, just about everybody led a lap as first it was Dave Fachini of North Adams, MA, then Jim White of Pittsfield, MA, and finally Rick Duzlak of Pittsfield, MA.. Don Shepard of Millerton, NY took over the top spot on lap 6. The top five cars ran in close nose to tail formation over the last 5 laps, but at the end it was Shepard holding off Fachini by half a car length. Third went to Bill Moon of Buskirk, NY, fourth was Jim White, and fifth went to E.J. Legeyt of Windsor, CT. The 10 lap Pure Stock feature saw Lorne Browe of East Greenbush, NY in the lead but on a lap 3 restart after a caution, Browe develped a flat tire and in the wild scramble to see who would take over the front, Steve Hough of East Greenbush, NY took command. Hough cruised the rest of the way and brought home the win in front of Ray Hunt second, Rob Yetman of Casleton, NY third, Steve Hatch of East Chatham, NY fourth, and George Miles of Millerton, NY fifth. Lebanon Laments... Last week, Don Ackner was leading his head race when he dropped out with mechanical problems and this week while leading the feature, he finds a spun out Chris Moore in turn 3 ending his night. We sure hope Ackner finds some good luck real soon... Sportsman driver Bobby Chalmers of Adams, MA has also been experiencing some bad luck. We are hoping the tides will turn for him soon... Rick Wright was driving the 55K formally driven by Mike King as King is now in the 24JR formally driven by J.R. Heffner. Heffner purchased John Hewitt's old car as Hewitt recently got a new car. There are now three number 24 cars competing each week in the the Modifieds. Talk about confusion...Great to see Modified driver Scott Dickie back in the pits after an accident that side-lined him earlier this season... The Easter Limited Sprints will also be in action along with a 4 Cylinder Demo Derby.
