Petrocci Twin 50s To Phelps & Tomkins At RWR
Posted Monday, Sep 03, 2007
Elbridge, NY — September 3, 2007 – Tom Skibinski, Advance Auto Parts Super DIRTcar Series PR Director
A memorable night for Jimmy Phelps and Gary Tomkins as they shared space in the winner’s circle at Rolling Wheels Raceway Park after splitting Advance Auto Parts Super DIRTcar Series Petrocci Twin 50s presented by Ferris Mowers on Monday night. It was Phelps first tour win of the 2007 campaign and Tomkins second, with his first coming at the same Elbridge oval during the Independence Day holiday.
Initial race winner Phelps earned a guaranteed starting berth in the prestigious Rite Aid 200 Championship race on Oct. 7 of Super DIRT Week XXXVI at the New York State Fairgrounds in Syracuse while Willy Decker’s 10th-place tally in the nightcap earned him preferred status in DIRTcar NorthEast’s biggest event.
Phelps started on the pole to pace the 33-car starting field in round one but his first Advance Auto Parts Series win of the season was never guaranteed, especially after Alan Johnson blew past on the lap 10 restart and tried his best to extend the advantage the rest of the way. Numerous caution periods thwarted the efforts of ‘A.J. Slideways,’ with a half-dozen slowing the action over the ensuing 22 laps. Phelps shadowed the leader the entire way until ducking under in the H&H Motorsports no. 98H Mohawk Northeast-New England Race Fuels/Troyer Spl. to forge the final lead change on lap 39. Billy Decker finished his race-long charge in second while tour points leader Tim Fuller salvaged third-place ahead of Johnson and Vic Coffey.
“This car is fabulous…Troyer race cars, what can I say…everybody’s going good in them, I’m just fortunate to be a part of it,” said Phelps, adding Rolling Wheels to his growing list of Advance Auto Parts Series win sites that began last season with inaugural tour triumphs at Brewerton (NY) Speedway and Williams Grove Speedway in Pennsylvania. “I’ve been coming here with a Sportsman, Small-Block and Big-Block and never won before, so this feels pretty good.”
Phelps won the first of four qualifying heats and in the traditional pre-race draw the Baldwinsville, N.Y. driver chose a young race fan wearing an Advance Auto Parts baseball cap that sported the no. 1 to afford him the pole-position start. He opened up an early advantage over Alan Johnson yet that quickly evaporated when Bobby Varin had a tire blow out at the end of the front straightaway to incur the first caution period on lap 6. Shannon Whaley slowed to a stop in turn two and the second restart proved more significant as Johnson moved to the head of the class on lap 10 while Phelps, Matt Sheppard, Pat Ward and Ryan Phelps filed in behind.
Tour regular Frank Cozze drifted off the track high in turn one forcing a third slowdown on lap 18 before the Pennsylvanian would turn pitside for good in 29th spot. Yellow flag fever continued with four separate incidents keeping the average speed down to a snail’s pace midway through the race. Second-generation driver Craig Hanson suffered a flat left-rear tire (lap 22), a driveshaft let loose on Steve Paine’s Troyer machine (lap 24) and Tomkins had a right-rear shoe go soft (lap 25) before strong running Ryan Phelps lost air in his own right-rear tread to keep chief starter Matt Burdick on his toes.
With green flag action kept to a minimum, 13th-place starter Billy Decker still managed to work his way to the front as the Unadilla, N.Y. chauffeur cracked the top-five for the first time by lap 20 and found himself in third with another 20 laps still to go. Rookie racer Russ Hefti slid to the infield with a left front flat tire to bring out the last caution on lap 33, leaving Johnson, Phelps, Decker and Fuller a clear track ahead to determine the final outcome among themselves.
Phelps continued to apply the pressure to the rear bumper of DIRTcar NorthEast’s all-time Big-Block win leader and his persistence paid off as he regained the lead diving low as the duo charged out of turn four to complete lap 39. Three more times around and it was Decker disposing of Johnson, with Fuller grabbing third by lap 45. Decker was able to cut Phelps’ near three-second lead to less than one over the remaining five circuits before crossing the line three car-lengths behind under the checkered flag.
“I kinda screwed up that restart on the bottom and thought maybe I could get (Alan) back but he just took off on me and was awful good,” divulged Phelps, addressing the early lead change that knocked him out of the top spot for the time being. “The track came to us and the car was really good at the end. We had a little trouble in traffic which was probably more me than the car. I could see we were gaining on him little by little and I knew if I could stay smooth I’d be alright.”
After Phelps drew to invert the top12 for round two, Tomkins started fifth and watched as pole-sitter Dale Planck and Matt Sheppard held the point for the first half of the race. Tomkins stayed steady aboard the no. 84 Honeoye Auto Parts-Red Parker & Son Excavating/Bicknell entry and reeled in Sheppard for the final lead exchange on lap 23. Fuller improved one position from race one to finish second while Phelps slipped past Sheppard on the final circuit to secure third with Pat Ward filling out the front-five.
“My crew has really busted their butts this weekend, even when we’re running good there’s still a lot of work to do,” said Tomkins, following his third feature win of Labor Day Weekend after sweeping twin 35s on Saturday at Canandaigua Speedway. The only other win for the 2004 Mr. DIRTcar champion came in July when Tomkins copped the second 50-lap Series race run at Rolling Wheels. “Its tough with these double features because its like twice the work, and these guys just keep going and going. I have to thank Jason Potter and some of his own crew for helping out the last couple days, it was really a godsend in a time we really needed.”
Planck jumped out to the early lead after out-dragging new front row partner Sheppard. Originally slated to start second, Brett Hearn switched cars and was relegated to begin in the back of the field for the nightcap. The ‘Natural’ only lasted three laps up front as Sheppard grabbed his first lead on lap four. Tomkins was on the move from his start inside row three and with 10 laps scored he held down second ahead of Planck, Chuck Bower and Fuller.
The leaders reached traffic with a dozen laps complete and soonafter a great battle ensued that included a six-car cluster of heavy-weights all looking to advance using lapped cars to their advantage. With 15 laps on the board, Planck did his best to hold back Fuller and Coffey as Pat Ward, Billy Decker and Jimmy Phelps looked for racing room both high and low. The non-stop action came to a brief halt for the first time on lap 23 when veteran Butch Tittle slowed in his Z Car between turns one and two.
Tomkins dug down deep on the restart and crossed the line ahead of Sheppard by just three feet before a second yellow flag was quickly unfurled as red hot Decker slowed with rear-end failure in the LJL Racing no. 91 Bicknell machine to put an end to his night while running sixth. The third caution in five laps took place on lap 27 after Steve Paine and Kevin Bates tangled on the back chute, leaving Paine sitting idle facing the wrong way in turn three with a right-rear wheel missing from the yellow no. 7x Troyer machine.
Back under green Tomkins increased his margin over second-generation driver Sheppard while Fuller, Ward and fast-charging Hearn occupied top-five positions with 20 laps still to go. Starting 12th in the 31-car field by virtue of his worst possible pre-race draw, Phelps hustled the H&H Special into sixth-place before Derrick Podsiadlo stopped in the turn one pit entrance to incur the fourth and final caution period on lap 37.
The run to the checkers was no problem for Tomkins although Sheppard did his best to stave off the stiff challenges from the onslaught of pressure applied by the Series’ leading point chasers. Directly in his rear-view mirror Fuller and Ward ran side-by-side while Phelps and Hearn jockeyed high and low right behind in a four-car scramble. Fuller finally slipped under ‘Super Matt’ on lap 44 and Phelps followed suit ducking under Ward with three laps to go. Fuller pulled to within six car-lengths of winner Tomkins at the line while round one victor Phelps snuck by for third the last time around.
“This team is something else, we’ve had a terrible year by our standards but these guys just keep plugging along and Doug (Dulen, owner) keeps everybody pumped up,” said Tomkins, following his 14th career Advance Auto Parts Series victory and fifth tour triumph at Rolling Wheels. “I have to thank them all, because of them I’m sitting here tonight.”
“This is when the money is earned right now and it seems with a lot less races there’s a lot more attention given to them, so hopefully we can pick off some more, earn some money and end the season on a high note. The car wasn’t all that good in the first race when I came in with that flat tire. We changed it and that made a big change to the car, and man, that thing lit right up all of a sudden. We didn’t make much change between races, just hoped the track was gonna stay good where we were running and it did. After that I just had to bide my time and slowly work my way around,” added Tomkins, who claimed his first Petrocci Memorial victory in 2005 and followed up two weeks later at Rolling Wheels with his only 200-lap triumph to date.
Fuller might have been even more pleased with his runner-up tally after the JL Motorsports no. 19 Chiefs Tobacco & Gas-G&R Auto Parts/TEO sustained damage in an early race altercation on the front stretch as he fought his way forward in traffic.
“We were really lucky,” Fuller said point blank after finishing second to increase his Advance Auto Parts Series points lead to 37 over Brett Hearn, who is in search of the coveted Mr. DIRTcar Big-Block crown that has remained out of reach since 2001. “Me and Dale (Planck) came together and bent the left rear spindles all the way back. I didn’t even know if I’d finish. There’s some serious damage on the left side so I’m really happy with second.”
“It’s a big morale booster. Any time you can come out of these races, Modified or Late Model, with a top-three you’re doing something. We’ve had a great weekend, now we have to get ready to go to the Valley,” noted Fuller, after finishing 4th and 6th the previous night at Cayuga County and chalking up a pair of top-3s at Rolling Wheels. The 2005 Mr. DIRTcar earned his fifth Integra Shocks Time Trial Award at RWR after turning the 11th quickest lap under the clocks on Sunday in Weedsport.
Possibly the hottest ---at lease consistent--- driver on tour is now buckled in behind the wheel of an ’08 Troyer model boasting the latest technology from the Rochester, N.Y.-based shop. Third-place runner Phelps posted his seventh straight top-four tour finish as DIRTcar NorthEast’s summer season came to a close on Monday.
“You couldn’t ask for a better situation than the one I’m in, with everybody helping out since day one,” beamed Phelps, who ranks fourth in Advance Auto Parts Series points behind only past Mr. DIRTcar Big-Block title-holders Fuller, Hearn and Decker, while Paine fills out the front-five in the 2007 standings. “The Troyer cars haven’t missed a beat and its been a lot of fun racing up front this year.”
“The car was super, just took me too long to get going. Don’t know if it was the rhythm or needed the set-up to come in or whatever, wish I had another 50 laps. It was good there at the end when it counted and we were able to get what we could get, had a great night and got a win out of it. Randy (Kisacky, crew chief) basically just told me it was the kind of set-up that wins 100-lappers, that’s what makes these 50s so tricky. We’re on the right track, that’s the main thing right now,” added Phelps, who finished 7th last year in his first full year following the Mr. DIRTcar Big-Block Championship Series.
The top touring teams head to Lebanon Valley Speedway for round #25 of the 2007 Advance Auto Parts Super DIRTcar Series. The Valley of Speed hosts its second tour event of the season on Sept. 8 with the Coors National 200 Championship headlining the Saturday show that offers valuable points towards the overall Hoosier-Sunoco Mr. DIRT Championship plus a guaranteed starting spot in the Rite Aid 200 during Super DIRT Week. The Lebanon Valley race is also the first ‘Triple Crown’ event of the season with 150 points on the line for the winner and 50 points awarded to start.

SKIDMARKS
2007 Tour Travelers: For the third straight year tour officials once again signed up the best Big-Block Modified teams in the Northeast to compete in every Advance Auto Parts Super DIRTcar Series show. The star-studded group of drivers accepting contract extensions are reigning Mr. DIRTcar points king and winningest Big-Block Modified driver Alan Johnson, current Advance Auto Parts Super DIRTcar Series points leader Tim Fuller, all-time DIRTcar Modified win leader Brett Hearn, five-time DIRTcar NorthEast Driver of the Year Danny Johnson, ‘04 Mr. DIRTcar titlist Gary Tomkins, recently crowned Cayuga County & Fulton points king Jimmy Phelps, Canandaigua Speedway record-setter Steve Paine, New Egypt Speedway points champion Matt Sheppard, full-time tour follower Dale Planck, Keystone State open-wheel veteran Frank Cozze, four-time Super DIRT Week Rite Aid 200 champion Billy Decker and Central New York talent Justin Hears.
Pot Holes: For the second straight event the H&H Motorsports team had on display a no. 98H Mohawk Northeast-New England Race Fuels/Troyer car, the same one driven by Jimmy Phelps in the Advance Auto Parts Series twin-bill run off at Cayuga County Fair Speedway on August 19. The car was parked alongside the Troyer tent as part of a special Labor Day promotion for both team and manufacturer…..Alan Johnson finally got on track in a tour event with his new Bicknell ride by taking top honors in the 53-lap nightcap staged the previous night in Weedsport. ‘A.J. Slideways’ first win of the season was recorded at Fulton Speedway in early June. “Slick tracks kinda even things up a little bit,” Johnson stated. “We didn’t run too good on Saturday, think I had some bad tires. Have some good ones tonight so we’ll just see what happens.”…..Tim Fuller collected his fifth Integra Shocks Fast Time Award of the season, his third posted at Rolling Wheels. Fuller’s time of 20.574 sec. was quicker than that registered by Billy Decker in July at RWR, yet still over a half-second slower than the track record set by Alan Johnson (20.029) in last year’s Petrocci Memorial…..Gary Tomkins was the first three-time Big-Block winner over the extended Labor Day Weekend, adding a pair of feature victories at Canandaigua Speedway to his latest 50-lap triumph at Rolling Wheels…..A seven-time feature winner at New Egypt Speedway where he captured his first career DIRTcar Big-Block Modified track points championship, young gun Matt Sheppard finally broke the ice Monday at RWR by leading his first laps in the second 50-lapper. It took ‘Super Matt’ 24 races to do so before he paced the field for 19 circuits en route to finishing fourth in the nightcap…..Russ Hefti added 40 more points to his Advance Auto Parts Series total to vault ahead of Wallace Stacey in the race for 2007 Rookie of the Year honors. Hefti (209 pts) now leads Canadian pilot Stacey (202) by a scant seven points heading down the stretch, with Roger Chrysler (178) adding his name to list of first-year Big-Block drivers…..Motor trouble plagued Justin Haers in warm-ups forcing the Phelps, N.Y. driver to jump behind the wheel of a back-up no. 32c CMI, Inc. ride more familiar with Can-Am Motorsports Park points champion Vic Coffey aboard. Haers responded with a consolation round victory yet ended up 25th and 16th in the main events…..Former full-time tour runner Bobby Varin made his initial Advance Auto Parts Series appearance of the season at the ‘Fast Track’ steering Jake Spraker’s no. 1j Glen Ridge Motorsports Park/Bicknell entry. Varin currently has plans to chase the checkers at Super DIRT Week in Syracuse in another month as well as the Eastern States 200 finale at Orange County Fair Speedway to close out October on the DIRTcar NorthEast circuit…..Varin joined Mike Murphy, Ted Lamb Jr. and Craig Hanson making their first trips on tour this season, bringing the total to 11 drivers that weren’t at Cayuga County the night before. Willy Decker, Randy Chrysler, Eldon Payne Jr, Pat Ward, Ryan Godown, Shannon Whaley and Joe Isabell ---driving his father Jeff’s Troyer car--- were the other new drivers signing in at Rolling Wheels…..Another featured Troyer driver, Danny Johnson, jumped into the ride of Sunday night’s Cayuga County Sportsman winner John Behron and completed just one lap in the second 50-lapper before a black flag signaled him pitside for the remainder. Crew chief Mike Burdick revealed that the primary no. 27j machine was running too rich and burning a lot of fuel in the opener. In an effort to replace the high-pressure fuel pump regulator with its high temperature, time ran out between main events and Johnson was forced to jump in the closest car he could find!
