Brett Hearn Captured 2nd Advance Auto Parts SDS Checkered Flag Monday At Drummond
Mon - July 10, 2006 -- Autodrome Drummond
Drummondville, QC
Author: Tom Skibinski, DIRT NorthEast PR Director
All-time Advance Auto Parts Super DIRT Series winner Brett Hearn survived unruly track conditions in an extended feature to capture his second tour victory of the season Monday night at Autodrome Drummond. Hearn forged the eighth and final lead change before outdistancing runner-up Gary Tomkins en route to a decisive 10 car-length triumph in the 29th Annual Budweiser 100 to close out the traditional Canadian doubleheader. The win was worth $6,000 while the guaranteed starting berth in the Eckerd 200 Championship during Super DIRT Week XXXV, Oct. 4-8, at the New York State Fairgrounds in Syracuse went to Tomkins. Frank Cozze crossed the finish line third yet was disqualified after his big-block entry came up light on the scales in the customary post-race inspection. Jimmy Phelps, Tim Fuller and new Advance Auto Parts SDS points leader Alan Johnson rounded out the top-five.
“Our team really needed this win bad,” said Hearn, 48, following his fourth SDS win at Drummond with his last coming in 1993. “Canada has been so good to me, the tracks and their fans, and we’ve had a lot of success coming here over the years.”
As the day unfolded, weather forecasters figured a 50% chance of rain in the evening, leaving DIRT officials scanning green blobs on the radar throughout the show projecting what time it may strike Drummondville --- located an hour Northeast of Montreal in the province of Quebec. Ten caution periods plagued the main event, although the anticipated precipitation never found its way over to the 56 year-old facility, today promoted by driver Yan Bussiere while Francis Potvin serves as Race Director and Carl Labonte remains track General Manager.
Fresh off scoring his first-ever Advance Auto Parts tour victory the night before at Cornwall Motor Speedway in Ontario, Dale Planck won his first Integra Shocks Fast Time Award the next evening at Drummond and then proceeded to select outside front row in the customary pre-race re-draw. Planck’s time of 17.278 sec. (83.343 mph) established a new one-lap record on the current high-banked 4/10-mile layout, with 3/8-mile (2000) and 1/2-mile (2002-04) track lengths used in past time trial calculations. Alongside Planck to start the century grind was defending race winner Gary Tomkins, still hungry for his first Series win of the 2006 race season.
Following a five-minute fanfare of fireworks and the traditional infield cannon shot ---this year accompanied by an upbeat musical score as each driver was spotlighted in frontstretch introductions--- the 30-car field took off after the initial green flag waved and Planck edged Tomkins across the line by a foot to lead the opening circuit. Tour stars Alan Johnson, Brett Hearn and Tim Fuller chased the lead duo in the early stages and crept even closer when Drummond regulars Mario Clair and Martin Roy tangled out of turn two with five laps complete to create the first caution period.
On the ensuing restart, Series standout Johnson immediately fell off the pace and pitted for a left-front flat tire while the Rudalavage/Laughing-owned no. 14J NativePoker.Com-WPC Associates,Inc.-Pine Line Auto Sales/Bicknell entry also appeared to have sustained minor front-end damage. Frenchman Dany Bilodeau looped his own mount back under green and Tomkins charged high out of turn four to take his first lead on the next restart. A second left-front flat forced Johnson into the pits again on lap 15 with Tomkins and Planck still heading the field.
Rough track conditions continued to prevail as Tom Sears, Jr. brought out caution number five on lap 21 when his no. 8J JIR Motorsports machine rolled out of turn one and landed on all four wheels midway through the corner. Back under green, Tomkins opened up a comfortable advantage aboard the no. 1 Honeoye Auto Parts-Pillsbury/Bicknell machine, leaving behind Planck, Billy Decker, Fuller and Hearn a quarter way through. That was the highest Decker would get as the no. 91 Gypsum Wholesalers-Stadium Int’l-Quality Hardwoods/Bicknell ride began to fade soonafter and lost a lap following a turn 1-2 spin on lap 36.
The yellow flag for Decker tightened the field on the next side-by-side restart and Hearn blasted from fourth to first in just two laps to gain his first advantage on the 41st circuit. Tomkins bolted back out front the next time around before Hearn repeated his high side maneuver to regain the point on lap 44. Tomkins was again scored as the leader just as caution lights flashed on for the seventh time as the result of a backstretch tangle between hometown driver Alain Laplante and DIRT big-block rookie contender and Planck teammate Ryan Jacobs. Laplante was disqualified for the remainder of the event after he climbed into Jacobs mount with his fist flailing.
Hearn continued to shadow Tomkins at the midway point while Fuller, Planck and Phelps filled out the front-five. Popular Pennsylvanian Cozze, local star David Hebert steering Pierre Berthiaume’s no. 20 big-block entry, Matt Sheppard, Kyle Jacobs and Pat Ward rounded out the top-10 with Alan Johnson already up to the 12th position. Hearn blasted high out of turn two to take command on lap 55 and built up a comfortable advantage before Hebert suffered a blown motor to incur another slowdown some 20 laps later. Tomkins edged ahead briefly on the lap 78 restart yet Hearn stormed back the next lap aboard the potent no. 20 Madsen Motorsports-Wentworth Custom Homes/TEO machine in the final exchange at the top.
While Hearn outdistanced Tomkins at the point and Cozze had charged past Fuller into the show position, a great battle for fifth showcased the Super DIRT Series stars as Phelps, Planck, Alan and Danny Johnson swapped spots lap after lap, bouncing off each other and banging off the walls in their pursuit of the podium. DIRT big-block rookie Jacobs ---Kyle this time--- slowed out of turn four to curtail the on-track action and Clement Therrien stopped high against the turn four wall to bring out the final yellow flag on lap 100. Five laps later, Hearn was out front again, this time as winner of an Advance Auto Parts SDS-high 89th main event and 694th triumph of his open-wheel career. Tomkins and Cozze came next with Phelps slipping by Fuller for fourth-place on the white flag lap. Cozze’s mount was found to be six pounds underweight in the post-race check and he was placed at the bottom of the final scoresheet, credited with last-place points and money despite generating a stellar late-race rally. Alan Johnson moved into the new top-five and took over the Advance Auto Parts points lead by six markers over Decker, who finished 22nd with just 51 laps complete.
“We’ve had so many bad finishes after winning the (Hagerstown) opener, still don’t know why yet the team has never given up,” said Hearn, following his seventh DIRT big-block feature win of the season which pushes his career total to 321. “It seems like we’ve been struggling for a month but with this car its really only been just a few races. One win doesn’t make a season so we plan on winning a couple more before its all done. The track became treacherous out there as some pretty deep holes developed. But our car worked good low at first and then I really liked it up high at the end once I could stay above the holes. You really had to pay attention every turn of every lap to keep your car where it was smoothest.”
Noted runner-up Tomkins, who completed his winning rally last summer in a lap 93 pass of Matt Sheppard, “Once Brett showed me the upper groove I just followed the rest of the way. He definitely had the better car tonight, the track was just too rough to offer him much more.” Added third-place runner Phelps, “The track was certainly tough yet we hung in there the whole race and brought home a good finish. It’s tough what happened to Frank but we’re still happy to survive out there tonight. It’s our best finish of the year so far, hopefully it gives us something more to build on for the rest of the season.”

SKIDMARKS
2006 Tour 12: For the second straight year DIRT MotorSports™ has signed up the best big-block Modified teams in the Northeast to compete in every Advance Auto Parts Super DIRT Series show. The list of a dozen contracted drivers (in alphabetical order) includes past Eckerd 200 champion Vic Coffey, four-time and defending Eckerd 200 titlist Billy Decker, third-generation big-block upstart Stewart Friesen, reigning overall Hoosier Tire-Sunoco Race Fuels Mr. DIRT champion Tim Fuller, ’04 Rookie of the Year Justin Hears, all-time Advance Auto Parts SDS race winner Brett Hearn, DIRT’s winningest big-block Modified driver Alan Johnson, Canandaigua (NY) Speedway record-setter Steve Paine, second-year tour mainstay Jimmy Phelps, rising star Matt Sheppard, former Mr. DIRT champion Gary Tomkins and 30-year open-wheel veteran Pat Ward.
Drummond Debuts: The roster of drivers registered for Advance Auto Parts SDS competition was increased by another dozen in round nine at Autodrome Drummond with nearly a third of the 34-car field newcomers to the 2006 tour. Many were on the host track’s list of small-block regulars participating in their first-ever big-block Modified special. On the list of first-timers were Frenchmen Fredric Gamache, Guillaume Daoust, Real LaFrance, Alain Laplante, Gino Clair, Claude Brouillard, Dany Bilodeau, Clement Therrien, Sebastien Gougeon, Kayle Robidoux, Yannick Ledoux and Wallace Stacey. Gamache hosted one of the biggest post-race celebrations in victory lane as he was the highest finishing Drummond regular in ninth. Robidoux (10th), Bilodeau (13th), Therrien (15th), Gougeon (17th), Brouillard (18th), Stacey (19th), Hebert (20th) and LaFrance (27th) found their place on the starting grid while Laplante was scored last following his early race antics.
Kyle Jacobs Making Tracks: A number of first-year drivers have set out this season holding high aspirations of securing DIRT Modified Rookie-of-the-Year honors. Hogansburg, N.Y. pilot Kyle Jacobs is among this talented Class of ’06 and is currently ranked highest in points out of group of nearly a half-dozen. “My biggest goal this year was just to get as much track time as possible and try to stay on the lead lap in as many races as possible,” said Jacobs, 35, employed full-time at Wolf Graphics in Akwesasne, N.Y., where he first crosses paths with current car owner David Thompson. “I’ve had my own small-block deal for awhile but doing some lettering jobs for Dave I always told him to keep me in mind if a ride opens up. When the split came with Dale (Planck) and the team he called me and we’ve been together since the Rolling Wheels race in May. It’s only been a short time but running against the best has already been a great confidence booster.” Since making his tour debut in the no. 11 Quality Concrete-King Enterprises-Chiefs Tobacco & Gas/Troyer machine at Rolling Wheels Raceway on May 7, Jacobs has qualified for every main event and completed the entire 100-lap distance in four SDS races, adding his first career top-five at Cornwall Motor Speedway on July 9. “I’ve learned a ton racing with the best not only in the Series but on weekends,” said Jacobs, who competes every Friday at Brewerton and Saturdays at Can-Am ( 2 3rd-place finishes) speedways. “I usually watch Alan Johnson as I tend to favor running low and Tim Fuller helps me out a lot, too. When the tour came to my area I usually ran close with the big guys on a limited budget but this year Dave has given me top-notch equipment. I’m looking forward to going to Syracuse this year, its my favorite track and I like that its more even now where everybody gets just one chance. I’m excited to go back with a big-block after we timed sixth-fastest last October in the 358-Modified race,” added Jacobs, who started small-block racing in 1994 after first helping out next door neighbor Billy Cook with his own small-block operation. Jacobs’ biggest win to date is the Jiffy Lube 100 at Cornwall in 2002 which was a Mr. DIRT 358-Modified Championship Series event and won in his own no. 37 Wolfclan Truck Stop-Morey Trucking Enterprises/Bicknell machine.
Real LaFrance Still Racing & Winning: The 2006 season is the 29th in car racing for open-wheel veteran Real LaFrance, a long-time weekend warrior at Autodrome Granby (Fri.) and less frequently Autodrome Drummond (Sat.) where he has won a feature at both this year. LaFrance has garner three DIRT big-block Modified season points championships at Drummond and one in the small-block ranks, with 1992 big-block and 2001-02 small-block titles registered at Granby during his reign. All but one of his 24 Modified wins at Drummond have been registered in the big-block ranks while 13 BB and 18 SB victories have been earned at Granby. “I haven’t raced at Drummond too much until recently with the new management offering better safety methods and more efficient officiating,” said LaFrance, who finished 27th on Monday steering the no. 11 H.Cordeau Transport-Beton Granby/Bicknell mount. “Its been a better track this year with the new banking and more fun to race at with the new staff in place.”
Bussiere Building Bigger & Better: Second-year track promoter Yan Bussiere has played a major role in the recent rejuvination of the Drummondville speedplant, expanding the newly high-banked turns from 40’ to 70 feet and constructing a steep pit bleacher to offer a clear view of the spacious 4/10-miler clay oval. After spending the week luring sponsors to join in the energy-driven race program, Bussiere suits up every weekend and straps into his no. 21 Mike Telus Mobilite-Budweiser/TEO machine for a high-speed racing exhibition at his favorite Saturday night hangout.
Fulton Series Race Scratched: The Advance Auto Parts Super DIRT Series big-block Modified race that was cancelled on June 28 at Fulton Speedway will not be rescheduled. The next major special at Fulton Speedway will be on Tuesday, July 25 which will include the second-ever appearance by the World of Outlaws Sprint Series.
