Sweet Victory For Jimmy Horton In Advance Auto Parts SDS Palmer Candy School's Out 100 At Susquehanna.
Thu - June 15, 2006 -- Susquehanna Speedway Park
Newberrytown, PA
Author: Tom Skibinski, DIRT NorthEast PR Director
The big-block Modifieds returned to Susquehanna Speedway Park for the first time in six years and open-wheel veteran Jimmy Horton was back in victory lane after scoring an impressive Advance Auto Parts Super DIRT Series win in the headline Palmer Candy School’s Out 100 on Thursday night. The 16th career Advance Auto Parts SDS triumph for the Neshanic Station, N.J. standout was worth $6,000 and earned him a guaranteed starting berth in the Eckerd 200 Championship during Super DIRT Week XXXV, Oct. 4-8, at the New York State Fairgrounds in Syracuse.
“I’ve got one helluva ride the guys have put together for me this year,” said Horton, 49, after overtaking race-long leader Dale Planck on lap 72 and pulling away for a convincing victory aboard the potent no. 42 Millennium Car Wash-Grosso Trucking/Bicknell entry. Already a two-time Eckerd 200 champion, the sensational one claimed the last big-block feature staged at the Newberrytown, Pa. oval on Labor Day Weekend in 2000 steering the no. 51m Michaels Bros. Mount in the 50-lap affair. “This one goes out to my little boy whose battling pneumonia in the hospital right now.”
Horton time trialed 11th fastest in the 37-car field, finished second in his qualifying heat and started outside of row three after selecting sixth in the customary pre-race re-draw. He stalked the leaders in the early stages and moved past runner-up Alan Johnson on a lap 32 restart before shadowing the ‘Planckinator’ over the next 40 circuits. Planck settled for second in the successful RSCA Promotion orchestrated by Vince Vicari, followed by all-time Advance Auto Parts tour winner Brett Hearn, and Central New York travelers Matt Sheppard and Gary Tomkins.
Current AAP Series points leader Billy Decker kicked off the show by establishing a new Modified track record of 18.060 sec. (79.734 mph) in Integra Shocks time trials. All-time Susquehanna Speedway Modified feature winner Kenny Brightbill (33 small-block, 4 big-block) previously held the track mark of 20.004 seconds which he posted during a USNA event on July 22, 2000. Decker’s clocking on Thursday was good enough to give him fast time for the second time this season and 23rd during his career but he could only muster a 15th-place feature finish after suffering a right-rear flat tire 30 laps in.
Cortland, N.Y. racer Planck jumped out early from his pole-position start with Alan Johnson, Susky’s 1994 SDS winner Frank Cozze, Hearn, Vic Coffey and Horton settling behind during the initial stages. The leaders maintained a steady pace, reaching traffic on lap 14, and a half-dozen circuits later Rich Scagliotta brought out the first yellow flag as he spun around his Adamsville Maintenance mount in turn two. Back under green, Planck opened up a comfortable advantage with the all-star cast of Johnson, Hearn and Horton trading paint lap after lap in his rear-view mirror. Tour follower Kyle Jacobs stopped on the back chute to require the second caution period on lap 28, with Horton surging into the runner-up slot on the ensuing restart while Decker made an uncharacteristic pitstop to replace a worn tread on the LJL Motorsports no. 91 Gypsum Wholesalers-Stadium International-Quality Hardwoods/Bicknell machine.
Empire State star Jack Johnson had charged into 13th after starting 26th on the 30-car grid, but his night came to an abrupt halt due to engine woes with 38 laps in the recordbook. By the midway mark, Horton continued to pester Planck while Sheppard, Hearn, Steve Paine, Johnson, Gary Tomkins, Coffey, Tim Fuller and Jamie Mills secured top-10 spots with 23 cars scored on the lead lap.
Billy Pauch suddenly slowed in Norm Hansell’s no. 357 mount just two laps later with Decker replacing Pauch in 17th position in time for the lap 55 restart. Leaders Planck and Horton sped ahead of the pack under green flag conditions and were already tagging onto traffic before 10 laps had even clicked off. Horton forced the issue on lap 66, ducking under Planck exiting turn two yet the leader used the lapped car of Jacobs as a pick down the back straightaway and held the point coming across the line. But after Doug Manmiller stopped in the fourth corner to incur another slowdown, Horton forged the final lead change muscling under Planck as the leaderboard flashed 72 laps complete. Popular Pennsylvanian Cozze came to a halt in turn four on lap 84 and Pat Ward pulled off with a right-front flat on lap 95, yet Horton never flinched on either restart and opened up a convincing eight car-length margin of victory as the checkered flag waved on the 43-minute Modified main.
“Dale just slipped up a little bit and running low was where we planned to be the whole race anyway so it worked out pretty well for us tonight,” said Horton, on the heels of his second DIRT Modified feature win of the season to bring his all-time DIRT big-block victory total to 80. He opened the ’06 Florida Tour at Volusia Speedway Park with a decisive win in the same Feil-powered machine and his latest open-wheel trophy improves his career total to 422 Modified victories. “We were getting better and better as the race went on, that’s the way this car has been all year. Rick (Grosso Jr., owner) gives me a good car and we have the guys to make it all happen on race day,” added Horton, who leads the New Egypt (NJ) Speedway point standings with four feature wins on the year.
Planck exhibited mixed emotions following his second-place showing, a career best on the demanding Advance Auto Parts trail in the Jacobs Racing no. 77x East End Auto Parts & Construction/Bicknell entry. “I always hate starting on the pole, its really hard to pace yourself especially for all 100 laps,” said Planck, 35, who scored his first big-block win of the season in April at Cayuga County Fair (NY) Speedway, the headquarters of DIRT MotorSports NorthEast. “And tonight I just plain screwed up, went into the turn too hot, slid up and gave Jimmy just enough room to get by. I felt really confident the whole race, not really using up the car and running it low to save on tires. I figured somebody would be coming up high at the end but I guess the inside line was where most guys wanted to get the job done. This is the year I was looking forward to breaking out into the big-block ranks and after a couple good runs we’ve proven we belong. These are the best in the business but after running right with them we’re pretty confident that a win might not be too far away for us either.”
After kicking off the ’06 Advance Auto Parts Super DIRT Series with a command performance at Hagerstown (Md.) Speedway, third-place finisher Hearn had only completed the entire race once in the past four extra-distance tour finales wheeling the no. 20 Wentworth Custom Homes-BPG Racing/TEO ride. “We’ve pretty much used up all our wildcards already and the series is only five races in,” said Hearn, 47, who captured two of the past six Super DIRT Series events held at Susquehanna since Cozze claimed the inaugural race in 1994. “It was kind of a tire deal out there tonight, we definitely had a car good enough to win, just couldn’t get it to the front when it counted. This series is so tough with track conditions so different at every stop. Last night (Lernerville) was a good example with a whole different group of guys finishing up front. We’ve been a little off lately but we’re ready to bounce back and tonight is hopefully the start of more good things to come.”

SKIDMARKS
2006 Tour 12: For the second straight year DIRT MotorSports™ has signed up the best big-block Modified teams in the Northeast to compete in every Advance Auto Parts Super DIRT Series show. The list of a dozen contracted drivers (in alphabetical order) includes past Eckerd 200 champion Vic Coffey, four-time and defending Eckerd 200 titlist Billy Decker, third-generation big-block upstart Stewart Friesen, reigning overall Hoosier Tire-Sunoco Race Fuels Mr. DIRT champion Tim Fuller, ’04 Rookie of the Year Justin Hears, all-time Advance Auto Parts SDS race winner Brett Hearn, DIRT’s winningest big-block Modified driver Alan Johnson, Canandaigua (NY) Speedway record-setter Steve Paine, second-year tour mainstay Jimmy Phelps, rising star Matt Sheppard, former Mr. DIRT champion Gary Tomkins and 30-year open-wheel veteran Pat Ward.
’06 Susky Series Starters: A half-dozen more drivers registered for the first time this season in round five of the 2006 Advance Auto Parts Super DIRT Series, including the father/son tandem of Billy Pauch and Billy Pauch Jr., second-generation pilot Keith Brightbill, veteran Jack Johnson, multi-time Susky small-block points champion Jeff Strunk and Gary Hager. Ray Swinehart and Sean Merkel were also in competition after traveling to the Sunshine State in February for the Florida Winternationals at Volusia Speedway Park. Both Pauchs, Johnson and Strunk were the only ones that qualified for the 100-lap finale.
Hearn Hangover: All-time Advance Auto Parts Super DIRT Series winner Brett Hearn opened the season in dominating fashion, rallying with back-to-back feature wins at Volusia Speedway Park in February to claim the coveted Florida Tour title then leading all but five laps to capture the SDS lid-lifter at Hagerstown (Md.) Speedway in March. But since then a dark shadow has been cast over the Madsen Motorsports camp and the ‘Jet’ has been grounded for well over a month of tour competition. “We got into a wreck at Fonda early in the season and had some unforeseen damage that we haven’t figured out yet, so tonight we’re finally bringing back out the new car,” divulged Hearn, as he prepped pitside for the Susquehanna showdown on Thursday. His entry on this night was the same car he opened with at Volusia in February but motor trouble spoiled the ’06 debut in the Sunshine State. To date, less than 40 laps had been logged with this particular TEO copy heading into Susky. “This is the first time I’ve ever been lapped in three straight series races. There’s no excuses, nothing broke and I was on the track at the end of every one. Something’s still wrong with the car but we’re yet to pinpoint the problem so bringing out the new car is really our only choice right now. We’ve had trouble early on in this series before so despite digging another hole we know we can come back with a lot of big races still to go.” A drought for Hearn is unlike any dryspell experienced by the majority of competitors in his field. Despite a handful of lack-luster performances on the Advance Auto Parts SDS stage, the Garden State star has still racked up nine feature wins (3-Hagerstown, 2-Orange County, 2-Volusia, 2-Albany-Saratoga) in 2006 to rank among the best in any division nationally. Sandwiched between his Hagerstown triumph and most recent third-place tally at Susquehanna, in AAP Series events the Sussex, N.J. ace has so far placed 17th and 20th (1 lap down) in twin-50s at Rolling Wheels, 22nd (-1 lap) at Cayuga County and 13th (-1 lap) at Lernerville.
Conquest For Cozze: Not since the past millennium has long-time open-wheel traveler Frank Cozze made a concerted effort to follow the Advance Auto Parts Super DIRT Series through the region. The slimmer, stronger and certainly more successful (2005 New Egypt Speedway points champion) chauffeur from Wind Gap, Pa. is back on board DIRT MotorSport NorthEast’s premier big-block Modified trail and keeping a clear perspective on what the game is all about. “I still work for a living, the racing deal is what I like to do for fun,” said Cozze, now 50, yet more focused today than most short-track racers barely half his age. As a tour regular in 1999, he placed 13th in the final overall Hoosier Tire-Sunoco Race Fuels Mr. DIRT point standings; his highest ranking was sixth on the 1990 Mr. DIRT Modified chart when the DIRT/Asphalt Series was part of the equation to determine the best in the big-block business. He owns 36 DIRT-sanctioned BB wins, a half-dozen of which have been registered in the SDS. “I still have sponsor commitments with New Egypt being so close to the homebase, but I’ve been given some leeway this season to get around to some other places. Next week I’ll be at Ransomville, then Fulton and Eldora is already on the list in August. All I want is a fair shake on the DIRT circuit, no hand-outs, just the chance to run on an equal level with regulars. And that’s what keeps it fun,” added Cozze, who resides two hours from both Susquehanna and New Egypt speedplants and only 60 minutes from Grandview (Pa.) Speedway. Joining Cozze in his latest attempt to contend throughout the summer are fellow Pennsylvanians Butch Tittle and Rusty Smith, who recently indicated their own intentions of following the bulk of SDS ’06.
Rookie Report: First-year DIRT big-block Modified drivers Kenny Stafford, Joe Isabell and Ryan Jacobs continued to keep up the hectic tour pace with recent out-of-state mid-week stops at Susquehanna and Lernerville. Stafford, 21st in tour points, has qualified for half of the six Advance Auto Parts Series main events while Isabell, 23rd in points, has reached the feature race starting grid twice. “Just trying to qualify anywhere in a feature is pretty good in this series,” said Stafford, 18, who won the Sportsman portion of Super DIRT Week last October at the NYS Fairgrounds. To date, 24th at Cayuga County, 25th at Lernerville and a series-best 20th-place finish at Susquehanna with all 100 laps complete straped in his no. 60 HS Edinger Trucking-Amsoil-Fast Line Performance/TEO mount fill his growing resume. “I’ll be at just about all the tour races until the end of July then it’ll be hit and miss in August with school starting back up. We’ve been getting a little better every week and time trailing 11th then qualifying through a heat in the series race at Cayuga County gave us a lot of confidence. Just getting as much track time as possible starting out is probably the most important part of the program,” said Stafford, a weekend warrier at Brewerton (Fri.) and Can-Am (Sat.) during the summer. The Homer (NY) H.S. graduate will be a freshman at Alfred State College this year in pursuit of a degree in Mechanical Engineering. Former Mod Lite racer Isabell made his way into the SDS starting line-ups at both Cayuga County (18th) and Lernerville (19th) in recent weeks. “You can only expect so much in this league so having fun is a priority for me,” said Isabell, 16, son of JIR Motorsports team owner Jeff Isabell, who fields tour rides for himself (7j), Tom Sears Jr. (8j) and Danny Johnson, with a car saved for Sterling Miller (12j) over the weekend at CNY tracks. “You definitely learn a lot running with these guys, there’s so much to take in race after race. Probably the biggest thing that sunk in is the fact that sometimes you have to go slow to go fast. That’s the value of experience, something that only comes over time.” While Stafford and Isabell remain top contenders for DIRT Modified rookie of the Year honors, first-year driver Ryan Jacobs has also traveled to every AAP event yet still anxiously awaits his first-ever starting assignment. Kevin Bates is the only other driver hoping to lay claim to first-year accolades when 2006 comes to a close in October.
