Decker Cops ‘Keystone Klassic’ Advance Auto Parts Series Win At Lernerville
Sarver, PA – June 14, 2006 – By Tom Skibinski, DIRT NorthEast PR Director
Unadilla, New York’s Billy Decker extended his points lead after capturing the 4th Annual Advance Auto Parts Super DIRT Series ‘Keystone Klassic 100’ on Wednesday night at Lernerville Speedway, pulling off a late race rally to get past defending race winner and reigning Mr. DIRT Champion Tim Fuller to score his second tour triumph of the ’06 campaign for the LJL Motorsports team. Decker became the 84th different big-block Modified winner since 1967 at the Sarver, Pa. oval which netted him the $6,000 top prize and valuable points towards the overall Hoosier Tire-Sunoco Race Fuels Mr. DIRT Championship.
“The car was just awesome tonight, I can’t thank John (Wight, owner) and the whole LJL gang for giving me such a good car and Scott (Jeffery, crew chief) working to get it dialed in tonight,” said Decker, 41, following his 34th career Advance Auto Parts SDS victory. He scored his first-ever big-block win at Lernerville steering the no. 91 Gypsum Wholesalers-Stadium International-Quality Hardwoods/Bicknell entry. “We’ve started out the series strong this year and that always helps keep team morale high. We’ll just try to keep it going, it’s a long season and we’ve got a lot more work to do before its all over.”
Decker had his work cut out after time trialing 20th in the 35-car field and placing third in the fourth and final qualifying heat to make it into the customary pre-race redraw. From there he chose the 11th starting spot out of 12 pills for the 100-lap DIRT Modified main. Initial heat race winners Alan Johnson and Matt Sheppard were the first drivers to draw and promptly picked the top-two starting positions to share the front row.
Johnson blasted high out of turn four to secure the early lead with pole-winner Sheppard and Tom Sears Jr. filing in behind. Second-generation driver Joe Isabell looped his JIR Motorsports machine low out of turn three to force out the initial yellow flag on lap four. Just two laps later Jimmy Weller III nearly mirrored Isabell’s mishap with his own Liberty Steel Products mount turning sideways in turn four sending cars scrambling around on all sides. On the ensuing restart Weller rounded the final corner and slammed the parked no. 2 Townsend Gas & Oil/TEO ride of Mark Flick with fellow Pennsylvanian Brian Swartzlander also involved in the rare red flag incident.
Back under green flag conditions, the action intensified over the next 45 laps which ran non-stop with positions changing everywhere but first. With a quarter of the race complete, ‘A.J. Slideways’ held a commanding lead with Sheppard, Dale Planck, a charging Decker and his Gypsum Express teammate Pat Ward filling out the front-five as the leaders wove through traffic. Johnson had already lapped up to the top-20 in an effort to score his first tour win of the season aboard Jeff Rudalavage’s no. 14j NativePoker.Com-WPC Associates,Inc.-Pine Line Auto Sales/Bicknell entry.
Decker continued to dust off the competition, disposing of Planck for third on lap 30 and then gliding past Sheppard for the runner-up slot eight laps later, yet he still remained a straightaway behind Johnson 40 laps in. Ninth-place starter Fuller cracked the top-five for the first time on lap 41, although 7.8 seconds behind the leader with his no. 19 JL Motorsports (Native Poker)-Chiefs Tobacco&Gas-G&R Auto Parts/TEO machine making up ground both high and low.
At the midway point Decker had tracked down Johnson until his right-rear tire blew with Decker able to move under A.J. as the duo came out of turn two on lap 51. With caution laps counting after lap 25, Johnson lost a lap in the pits and Decker held the point ahead of Fuller, Sheppard, Ward and Planck in time for the lap 56 restart. Three laps later, Fuller had enough heat in his tires to slingshot past Decker out of turn four and savor his first share of the race lead.
Under green flag conditions Fuller and Decker set a torrid pace for the next 30 laps. Ward had the best seat in the house to watch the leaders jockey in traffic, moving past Sheppard for third on lap 75 and setting his sights on the frontrunners soonafter. It was a cat-and-mouse chase high and low through as the laps dwindled with Decker shadowing Fuller’s every move. Fourth-place racer Tom Sears Jr. tapped the lapped car of Rusty Smith in turn two to send him sideways and incur the fourth and final caution period which set up a final dash to the checkers as the restart came with only a half-dozen laps left. It took Decker just two laps under green to charge past high out of turn four and he easily opened up a eight car-length margin en route to victory in the century grind. Fuller settled for second followed closely by Ward with Sears scoring a career-best fourth-place finish and Troyer house car pilot Jimmy Phelps crossing the line fifth.
“Tim showed a lot of class when he left a lane open up top and never touched me at the end,” said Decker, who built up a 43-point lead in the Advance Auto Parts SDS after five events over Fuller and Ward who are now tied for second on the chart. “The track was really funny tonight, it seemed to change a lot near the end. At first I thought the bottom was good but it ended up the top was even better when Tim switched to the low side. I got a good run with a few to go and it all just worked out for us tonight.”
Despite losing his front brakes in the waning stages, Fuller was content with second-place only because it was his close buddy Decker accepting the victory lane laurels. “I knew the car was good tonight, I just screwed up in time trials and then had to bide my time waiting for traffic to thin out in the feature,” said Edwards, New Yorker Fuller, 38, who entered the same car as last year using the same set-up although it was then red, numbered M1, carrying B&F General Machine backing and owned by Michele and Bob Faust. “I felt the brake pedal getting softer and couldn’t slow down in the corners at the end. I’m glad the race ended when it did as I would’ve kept going backwards each time around. Its still good anytime you can run well at a track you’re not too familiar with, and since I couldn’t win I’m glad Billy did, he’s got a good group together this year.”
Arguably one of the fastest cars at the end, Ward posted his second top-five feature finish in ’06 and continued to eye the elusive title in DIRT MotorSport NorthEast’s premier open-wheel class. “Those guys passed me once coming up through so I don’t know if I could’ve caught them even with a few more laps,” said second-generation Genoa, N.Y. pilot Ward, 49, whose father Bud celebrates his 50th consecutive year in stock car racing next season. “We probably could’ve made a few small changes but a lot of others can say the same thing, too. I thought I was good during the longer green flag periods but took a little while to get going on the restarts. Billy is such a master on the restart, he always seems to find the best lane to get around. Third is still good and it never hurts you much in a season-long points race.”

SKIDMARKS
2006 Tour 12: For the second straight year DIRT MotorSports™ has signed up the best big-block Modified teams in the Northeast to compete in every Advance Auto Parts Super DIRT Series show. The list of a dozen contracted drivers (in alphabetical order) includes past Eckerd 200 champion Vic Coffey, four-time and defending Eckerd 200 titlist Billy Decker, third-generation big-block upstart Stewart Friesen, reigning overall Hoosier Tire-Sunoco Race Fuels Mr. DIRT champion Tim Fuller, ‘04 Rookie of the Year Justin Hears, all-time Advance Auto Parts SDS race winner Brett Hearn, DIRT’s winningest big-block Modified driver Alan Johnson, Canandaigua (NY) Speedway record-setter Steve Paine, second-year tour mainstay Jimmy Phelps, rising star Matt Sheppard, former Mr. DIRT champion Gary Tomkins and 30-year open-wheel veteran Pat Ward.
Super Series Starters: Ten more new drivers registered for round four of the 2006 Advance Auto Parts Super DIRT Series, with all hailing from the Western Pa./Ohio Region except for Bethlehem, Pennsylvania traveler Rusty Smith. Track GM Gary Risch Jr., veteran Carl Murdick, female campaigner Chanda Reitz, Jeremiah Shingledecker, J.R. McGinley and three-time Lernerville points champion Brian Swartzlander call the Keystone State home while the father/son tandem of Jim Weller Jr. and Jimmy Weller III reside in Hubbard, Ohio.
Bolland & Swartzlander Pace Pennsylvanians:
For the second straight season Kevin Bolland (17th) was the top local finisher in the AAP tour stop at Lernerville while Brian Swartzlander (7th) was the fastest time trialer from the area. The 46 year-old top-flight pilots are currently the winningest active drivers at the nationally recognized Sarver oval while DIRT NE Hall of Famer Lou Blaney remains the all-time Modified winner with with 69 checkered flags. He’s followed by Bob Wearing Sr. (62 wins), Blackie Watt (61), Swartzlander (46), Ed Lynch Sr. (40), Kevin Bolland (34). Bolland was the first local to lead laps last summer, pacing the field for two circuits last summer from his pole-position start. Swartzlander continued his streak of bad luck on Wednesday, completing only six laps to end up 29th on the final scoresheet for the second straight year. Ranked first in track points entering the SDS showdown, Bolland is the only Western Pa. pilot to take on the big-block all-stars and come away with victory as he captured a twin 50-lap Advance Auto SDS main event in the 2003 Eckerd 100 at Lowe’s (N.C.) Dirt Track. The New Brighton veteran was once again recognized aboard the familiar ‘triple 7’ Northland Ford-Cintas-Brighton Hot Dog Shoppe-/Bicknell entry with a homebuilt motor. After wheeling Gary Risch’s no. 3g TEO around Lernerville’s spacious 4/10-mile clay oval, Swartzlander was back in the No. 83 McCutcheon Enterprises-Precise Racing Products/TEO machine while Risch failed to qualify his own car which he divulged afterwards wasn’t hitting on all cylinders.
Fast Field: It took just 14 minutes for 35 open-wheel entries to conduct time trails with a new Series track record of 16.180 sec. (88.999 mph) set by multi-time Mr. DIRT champion Alan Johnson. Chuck Bower set fast time of 18.347 seconds last summer while Billy Decker stopped the clocks in a time of 16.283 sec. before rain washed out the program in mid-June. Young guns Matt Sheppard, Stewart Friesen and Jimmy Phelps as well as Dale Planck also dipped below Bower’s mark in the Wednesday evening preliminaries.
Phelps Follow-Up: The return to Lernerville for Super DIRT Series competition on June 14 was one year to the day when Baldwinsville, N.Y. driver Jimmy Phelps made his debut in the H&H Motorsports no. 98h Mohawk Northeast-New England Race Fuels/Troyer car. “I found out that you learn something new just about everyday on this circuit,” said Phelps, 31, who has the added bonus of veteran crew chief Randy Kisacky’s experience for the entire ’06 Advance Auto Parts Series. “We’re at the point where we go to a track thinking we can win if things fall into place, not just playing for a top-10 finish anymore. But realistically there’s not a whole lot of difference between a first and a 10th-place car out here. You just go out and hope you hit on the right combination to give you a chance. I’m learning what it takes to run all 100 laps and be in contention until the finish. Its important for us to get that first win to get us over the first hump, that’s our biggest goal right now.” Troyer, Inc. mainstay Billy Colton was working right alongside Phelps and Kisacky throughout the evening, relaying that the new Troyer shop (burned to the ground last October during Super DIRT Week) is expected to be up and running on its Lyell Road site in Rochester, N.Y. in two more months.
‘Barefoot’ Bed-Ridden: DIRT MotorSports NorthEast drivers Tim and Bob McCreadie and Jack Johnson were originally scheduled to make special appearances at the Oneida Indian Nation’s Turning Stone Resort and Casino this week to sign autographs as part of the resort’s “Pedal to the Metal” scan-and-win promotion. Johnson will still be in the Event Center from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. Friday, June 16 and Tim McCreadie will be there from 3 p.m. to 5 p.m. Saturday, June 17. However, due to a serious motorcycle/SUV accident that hospitalized him on May 31, Bob McCreadie will not appear in the 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. slot on Sunday, June 18 yet will be replaced by Lebanon Valley Speedway all-star Andy Bachetti. ‘Barefoot Bob’ continues to make great strides in his recovery and is reportedly resting comfortably in his Watertown, N.Y. home. The entire racing community extends a most sincere get-well wish to one of the sports most popular competitors.
Trackside Tidbits: Hoping the Lernerville track surface would dry out a little more by feature time, Matt Sheppard stated prior to warm-ups, “If that track stays heavy tonight, its like I’m bringing a knife to a gunfight” ….. Top track prep man Ouch Roenigk noted afterwards “The wind just came up and dried the track out tonight” ….. Long-time Paine Motorsports spotter/radioman Mark Sabatine recently landed a job with the Professional Bowlers Association (PBA), in charge of lane maintenance during the 26-event campaign across America. Sabatine has held a similar position preparing bowling alleys at Regional tour events for the past dozen years …. All-time Advance Auto Parts SDS champion Brett Hearn was available at the Eckerd Pharmacy at 165 Butler Rd. in Kittanning, Pa. on raceday from 12noon to 2:00 pm. Hearn signed autographs, posed for pictures and gave away free tickets to the Advance Auto Parts Series/Eckerd 200 Qualifier Race at Lernerville that same night to the first 90 fans at the Eckerd store ….. The last two times Danny Johnson raced at Lernerville was during the 1997-98 season, and both years he returned back home with the first-place trophy firmly in hand. “To tell you the truth, I don’t really remember the place too much but look at the stands, it’s a great place to race for so many people” ….. Since Matt Sheppard graduated with a degree in Mechanical Engineering Technology from the Rochester (NY) Institute of Technology two weeks ago, the Waterloo, N.Y. driver has picked up two feature wins at Cayuga County Fair Speedway in Weedsport, N.Y. “Unfortunately, the only way you can go is back if you move at all,” said ‘Super Matt,’ 23, after drawing the pole to start the feature. “We’re still trying to get our tour program in place, its been a real struggle so far.” ….. Billy Decker was the lone driver to board an airplane to the Lernerville event, taking off in Sydney, N.Y. and touching down in nearby Butler, Pa. before flying into the winner’s circle just hours later…..The list of local drivers that competed in Lernerville’s SDS shootout last season that failed to enter a car on this occasion included Steve Young, Skip Moore, Tom Winkle, Phil Evans Jr., Rex & Russ King, Dave Murdick, Tom Mattocks Jr. and Mike Turner. Quite a few were recognized pitside taking in the action without bringing a helmet ….. Dale Planck was dubbed with the newest nickname “Planckinator” by former car owner Dave Thompson.
