Fuller Outlasts Horton To Post Advance Auto Parts Modified Victory At Volusia

Thu - February 16, 2006 -- Volusia Speedway Park

Barberville, FL

Author: Tom Skibinski, DIRT NorthEast PR Director

The mighty Mod Squad came back to Volusia Speedway Park for a second straight night and it was reigning overall Hoosier Tire-Sunoco Race Fuels Mr. DIRT champion Tim Fuller holding off Jimmy Horton to score the narrow 30-lap victory Thursday in round two of the Advance Auto Parts Modified Super DIRT Series. Fuller overtook Bobby Varin early on then outlasted Horton by .7 sec. to post the fourth Florida Tour win of his career, with his last victory lane trip at the spacious half-mile clay oval taken in 2003 en route to garnering the coveted Winternationals points crown.

"It’s been busy running both the Modified and Late Model this week but all the laps are a big bonus this time of year," said Fuller, 38, who won the ’03 Florida Tour title for car owners Michele and Bob Faust in their no. m1 B&F General Machine entry. Teamed with John Lazore in the no. 19 Native Poker-Chiefs Tobacco & Gas/TEO machine this season, the Edwards, N.Y. chauffeur never missed a beat scoring the $2,000 victory in just his second big-block effort of the 2006 campaign. "I watch those LM guys in amazement the way they throw it into the turns. That’s the same way it is for me in the Modified, knowing what to do and making the adjustments. I’m certainly a lot more comfortable in this car but still looking forward to getting more Late Model seat time. I just love those cars and can’t wait to get back out."

Fuller placed second in the fifth and final Modified qualifying heat to share the fourth row with Billy Decker to start the 15-mile big-block finale. A light fog had begun to roll in over the speedway as the cars filed trackside with 26 open-wheel ground-pounders anxious to take the initial green flag.

Bobby Varin was the most ambitious as he out-dragged front row partner Alan Johnson to surge ahead for the early lead. Riding both high and low, Fuller moved into the top-three with five laps complete and disposed of runner-up Johnson after four more circuits. The leaders mixed into traffic and sandwiched Wayne Jelley with Fuller taking the low line to forge the final lead change on lap 13. Only one yellow flag flew on Wednesday and the Thursday night finale was a mirror image until a barrage of caution periods lengthened the second half of the race.

Delaware driver Chuck Tucker slowed on lap 16 to force the initial stoppage before New Jersey invader Wade Hendrickson came to a halt in turn three with a broken rear-end evident on Sal DeBruno’s no. 0 South Jersey Overhead Door Special. Hendrickson threw his steering wheel in disgust at alleged culprit Danny Johnson the next time around and was immediately reprimanded by track officials for his misconduct.

Wayne Jelley and Dan Vauter tangled in turn four to incur a third slowdown and on the ensuing restart the yellow lights flashed yet again for Jerry Higbie’s stalled mount in turn two. Tenth-place starter Horton grabbed second-place from Dale Planck on the lap 22 restart then set his sights on Fuller in hopes of scoring his second feature win in as many nights.

Frontstretch contact between J.R. Heffner and Jeff Isabell with five laps to go resulted in another yellow flag on lap 27 as both cars were forced pitside for the closing circuits. The sixth and final caution arrived on lap 30 to extend the main event an extra half-mile, but Fuller never flinched and was up to the challenge to hold Horton at bay and register his 62nd career DIRT big-block Modified triumph under the lights.

"The track was pretty rough out there tonight and I just had to keep my fingers crossed at the end," said Fuller, who a half-hour earlier had failed to gain a starting assignment in the World of Outlaws Late Model Series main in John Wight’s no. 19 Gypsum entry. "This win means a lot to everybody. It’s always good to win down here, especially early in the season to get the guys feeling good for the trip back home. There’s still a long season ahead."

Looking to repeat on consecutive nights at Volusia for the first time since Brett Hearn won three straight during Race Weeks ’00, Horton crossed the finish line three car-lengths behind while Hearn settled for third-place in a back-up no. 20 Madsen Motorsports mount. Brothers Alan and Danny Johnson filled out the front-five while Pennsylvanian Rick Laubach, Massachusetts traveler Andy Bachetti, Decker, Tom Sears, Jr. and Delaware upstart Beau Wilkins finished among the top-10.

Through two of four races run, two-time points champion Horton tops the Florida Tour point standings with 116 points, followed by Fuller (112), Vic Coffey (92), Bachetti (92) and Decker (88). Ironically, when Fuller (2003) and Horton (1999) won their respective point titles, each claimed the crown for car owners Michele and Bob Faust. Open-wheel action continues Friday at Volusia with a 30-lap DIRT Modified main headlining round number three in the 35th Annual Winternationals. The overall 2006 Florida Tour points champion will be crowned Saturday, Feb. 18 following the final night of open-wheel competition.

SKIDMARKS

The car count dropped from 52 to 49 despite the addition of ’05 entry Scott Kurtzner from Brandon, Fla. and New Jersey’s Rick Grosso, Jr., owner of the opening day winning car driven by Jimmy Horton. Grosso, whose parents Rick Sr. and Nancy, promote New Egypt (NJ) Speedway while Rick Jr. is in charge of track preparation, missed qualifying by one spot in the second consolation race while Kurtzner failed to make the starting grid in the first consi. Mark Blackwell warmed up Grosso’s no. r24car the initial two days. Kurtzner’s recent office move to Tampa along with the late arrival of a repaired engine forced the New York native to miss Wednesday’s lid-lifter. He actually practiced at Volusia at the end of January but suffered a broken rod in the powerplant which was returned to his shop last Sunday. Kurtzner already has a Bicknell chassis on order for next season.

The no. 73 East End Auto Parts team cars entered Wednesday by owner Ryan Jacobs and Brian McDonald were both scratched for the week when Ryan learned of his father’s sudden passing later that same night. The entire DIRT MotorSports staff extends its condolences to friends and family of Ryan Jacobs. Also missing from the line-up on Thursday was Ted DeGroat from Dingman’s Ferry, Pa. The five-car team entered by JIR Motorsports was reduced by two as big-block rookie Joe Isabell (6j) loaned his motor to Danny Johnson while Sean Beardsley (18) waited on an engine that is expected to be delivered Friday morning. Jeff Isabell (7j), Tom Sears,Jr. (8j) and Johnson (27j) all qualified for Thursday’s Modified main.

Forming a unique business association in 2003, Tony and Jim Laughing, Dave and Don Thompson, John Lazore and Windell King have recently stormed the DIRT MotorSports NorthEast circuit with their financial backing showcasing a number of teams. Dave Thompson heads the Quality Concrete-King Enterprises-Chiefs Tobacco and Gas program with big-block Modified drivers Dale Planck (77x) and Stewart Friesen (10) as well as small-blocker Brian McDonald (151), his brother Don owns the no. 007 358-Modified driven by Roy Tarbell, Lazore owns the no. 19 Native Poker small-block car steered by Tim Fuller while Tony Laughing ---also a former owner of Randy Conners no. 120 358-Mod--- spearheads the efforts of DIRT’s all-time big-block feature winner Alan Johnson and the no. 14j NativePoker.com-WPC Associates ride. Tony Laughing and Don Thompson are the group’s designated deal-makers while Jim Laughing and King play a less active role on raceday.

Lebanon Valley (NY) Speedway mainstay Wayne Jelley hopes to be a part of the Advance Auto Parts Modified SDS when the points trail kicks off back up north. Current plans include a shake-down run at Hagerstown (Md.) Speedway at the end of February before the Advance Auto Parts series opener arrives at Hagerstown on March 25. Three straight days of dialing in his red no. 45 K&F Modular Homes-Freedom Plains-TLC Contracting/PMC mount has resulted in 13th and 15th-place feature finishes. "So far this has been a tough place to find a line to run," said Jelley, 45, younger brother of DIRT MotorSports NorthEast Hall of Famer Butch Jelley. "Its not a track where you can expect to be fast right away your first time out, there are just too many lane choices and those even move around as the night goes on."

The first of two autograph sessions included both Advance Auto Parts Modified and World of Outlaws Late Model Series drivers on Thursday. Members of the media, sponsors and promoters first convened in the afternoon outside turn four of the speedway for a meet and greet gathering emceed by popular DIRT NorthEast Public Address Announcer Shane Andrews. DIRT MotorSports Vice-President Brian Carter was introduced first at which time he outlined some of DIRT’s immediate plans for the future citing many of the challenges that lie ahead for the nationally recognized dirt track sanctioning body. DIRT VP Public Relations next acknowledged those LM ’Dirty Dozen’ drivers in attendance while Andrews recognized those Advance Auto Parts pilots that chose to participate, including Danny Johnson, Jimmy Phelps and Brett Hearn. Open to the public, a unique Kart Clash involving some of the same drivers, along with media and race officials, will kick off activity at 2 o’clock on Feb. 18 with the final autograph session conducted until 5 p.m.

POTHOLES

The 2006 season opened down south with many drivers caught up in the number game: Brett Hearn returned to the no. 20 Madsen Motorsports ride vacated by Stewart Friesen who now pilots the no. 10 Quality Concrete car; Fuller driving the re-skinned no. m1 TEO machine now sporting his own 19; and Orange County Fair (NY) Speedway regular Colin Jackson switching from cj2 to no. 923 to commemorate his 16 month-old son Cole’s Sept. 23 birthdate.....

Engine problems took center stage on Wednesday with Hearn (cracked block), Friesen (burned piston), Chris Whitehead (spun valve), Danny Johnson (piston) and Sean Beardsley (broken valve) among the victims. Dale Planck’s efforts to remedy the motor situation of teammate Friesen curtailed his own agenda despite finishing fourth on opening night. "We know how to get the car better, just didn’t have the time to make the changes with all the engine issues going on," said Planck, the fast timer in both practice sessions on Tuesday before copping qualifying heat wins on Wednesday and Thursday.

Frenchman Martin Roy, Jr. was a surprise entry this week and hoped to land a veteran driver to wheel his self-built Productions JR machine. Roy has driven the team hauler for Brett Hearn over the years and this trip used Hearn’s back-up Kevin Enders motor in his blue no. 57 open-wheel creation. New Yorker stars Jack Johnson & Steve Paine were among those drivers that Roy listed for possible hot lap sessions at the end of the week.....

Brett Hearn suffered a cracked engine block on opening day and returned Thursday with a second no. 20 Wentworth Custom Homes/TEO copy. Only this one had rear window posts that were slightly too high and needed modification before DIRT NE Chief Technical Inspector Bob Dini would allow Hearn access to the feature race starting grid.....

Competing together during the Florida Winternationals for a second straight season, Randy, 41, and Roger Chrysler, 44, spent Thursday night switching rides until younger sibling Randy climbed back aboard his own no. 21k Randy’s Smoke Shop-Arrow’s Express-Seneca Brand/Bicknell car to fill in the back of the feature race line-up.....

Jimmy Horton’s initial victory on Wednesday was celebrated on his wife Lisa’s birthday but still lacked a silver lining, especially in his driver’s uniform. "She just bought me a new driving suit and was a little mad when she found out I didn’t wear it this week. And it was hard to hide the fact after everybody saw me in victory lane."
