Hearn Flies To First Victory In 35th Winternationals At Volusia

Fri - February 17, 2006 -- Volusia Speedway Park

Barberville, FL

Author: Tom Skibinski, DIRT NorthEast PR Director

All-time Advance Auto Parts Super DIRT Series champion Brett Hearn got back on track Friday night at Volusia Speedway Park as he captured his first open-wheel win of the year in the 30-lap DIRT Modified main. Hearn overtook perennial rival Danny Johnson just past the midway point and cruised home for his 315th career DIRT big-block victory which netted him the $2,000 top prize.

"Our new partnership is already working out well and we’re off to a good start for another season," said Hearn, 47, following his 13th career win at VSP which was the first with his 2006 car owner Madsen Motorsports since the combination clicked along the DIRT small-block circuit in 2003. Still more impressive than Hearn’s all-time record 16 tour triumphs or the fact that he has now won at least one feature every year in Florida since 1998 is his total of 30 top-five feature finishes in the 36 races held over the past nine winters. He recently added Wentworth Custom Homes on the side panels of his trusty blue TEO entries which now carry the number 20 --- the same number he used as a big-block rookie in 1978.

The 30-lap DIRT Modified main got underway with pole-sitter Johnson taking early command over front row partner Hearn, with both winning qualifying heats to lead the 26-car field to the initial green flag. The open-wheel all-stars played cat and mouse until Dan Vauter spun in turn one to give the title contenders a chance to regroup with 11 laps complete.

Back under green, Hearn shadowed Johnson before pulling alongside as the dynamic DIRT duo navigated through turn number three. Hearn swept around Johnson despite the ’Doctor’ sliding up a groove and make customary contact in turn four to forge the final lead change. From there the ’Jet’ quickly opened up a comfortable margin two-thirds of the way through the race while Jamie Mills, opening night winner Jimmy Horton and Dale Planck tried to keep the leaders in sight.

Pennsylvanian Ray Swinehart slowed on the backstretch with a bent right front-end to erase Hearn’s big advantage with 23 laps scored. Five circuits later, Thursday night’s winner and top-10 runner Tim Fuller was hooked from behind by second-year Modified driver Stewart Friesen to bring out the third and final caution period. The final bid by Johnson never materialized in the three lap dash to the checkers as Hearn built up a 1.5 second advantage en route to another convincing victory in the Sunshine State.

"I probably should have won the first night out so we’re certainly happy to finally get the job done," said Hearn, who suffered a crack in his primary Kevin Enders-prepared big-block motor on Wednesday, forcing him to take out the back-up car in round two the following day. "Tonight I settled in early behind Danny and just watched to get a feel for where he ran the best. He wasted a lot of air time moving up on me but once I got by the car worked great the rest of the way. It’s always a big boost to win down in Florida and having success down here gives the crew more incentive to get things done before the season starts up north. I’m really excited about this year’s team, the attitude is so positive and starting out this way gets everybody feeling good for the long trip home."

Johnson settled for runner-up laurels on the much smoother Barberville half-mile oval, with Mills, Planck and Alan Johnson rounding out the front-five. Filling out the top-10 positions were Horton, who dropped from fourth to sixth on the final restart, Jerry Higbie, Wade Hendrickson, Bobby Varin and Troyer house driver Jimmy Phelps.

Through three of four scheduled Florida Tour races, Horton tops the point standings with 162 markers. Fuller (136) stands second ahead of Alan Johnson and Hearn who are tied at 132 followed by Andy Bachetti (128), who tied Hearn last February for the coveted Winternationals points crown. Horton is the only driver to post all top-10s while 15 of the 56 entries have qualified for the initial three events. Horton needs to finish 11th or higher on Saturday to wrap up his third Winternationals title, with the first two coming in 1986 and 1999. Were Fuller to win a second feature and Horton place 12th, Florida Tour co-champions would be recognized for a second straight year.

Open-wheel action at Volusia concludes for the Advance Auto Parts Modified Super DIRT Series teams on Saturday night with a 50-lap big-block main paying $5,000 to win headlining the 35th Winternationals finale. The 2006 Florida Tour points champion will be crowned after the fourth scheduled race Feb. 18.

SKIDMARKS

2006 marks the highly-anticipated return of the famed Orange County Fair (NY) Speedway to the DIRT MotorSports family with DIRT-sanctioned racing coming back to the fast 5/8th-mile oval after a brief one-year hiatus. After first joining the DIRT organization in 1983, Orange County was a core member track for over two decades. With Orange Co. back in the DIRT-fold, so are defending OCFS 358-Modified points champion Jerry Higbie and third-generation pilot David VanHorn, as well as Higbie’s Florida Tour teammate Randy Sherlock, Chris Shultz, Donnie Elliott and Colin Jackson, all of which registered for competition this week at Volusia.

"I’m still considering the benefits of being back with DIRT, but there certainly aren’t any negatives. So far I like this Hoosier tire a lot better than l last year," said Higbie, 33, who owns seven DIRT Modified victories ---all at OCFS---plus another 11 in DIRT’s top small-block class. Higbie will bring back the potent Jim Winchell owned PMC #17 to defend his Orange County 358 crown in ’06 and run the no. 47 Shaver entry in the headline Modified class. "Orange County is definitely a unique track, kind of survives on its own like an island all by itself. Being part of DIRT certainly offers more promotional opportunities but with our home and business being here for so many years we’ll support the place no matter who is in charge. We’re looking forward to getting the season started up north and racing at Volusia is a good winter break before things get going in the spring."

Grandson of the fabled Carl "Fuzzy" VanHorn, 22 year-old David has already rolled through the DIRT Sportsman ranks, continues in the 358-Modified division and looks to establish himself in big-block competition by running whenever and wherever his bank account permits. "Going back with DIRT opens the door for more small-block tracks to run at and allows us more places to go this year," said VanHorn, whose father Dave Sr. still spearheads the team’s motor program with their yellow no. 71 TEO Pro mounts receiving sponsorship support from Harmony Sand & Gravel, Diamond Hart Enterprise and Art’s Radiator. The Phillipsburg, N.J. tandem retains only one objective for the upcoming season, run as much as it can afford with the best equipment possible. "We’d like to follow the whole 358 Series but getting to the Canadian tracks might be our only setbacks with all the travel involved," added VanHorn, who helps maintain a stable of two big-block and one small-block Modified for his ’06 campaign. "We’ll start out with the Advance Auto Parts Series opener at Hagerstown and see how things fall into place after that. The 358 title at Orange County is a goal we think there’s a shot at but staying out of trouble and keeping expenses down will help determine that." Added Dave Sr., "We’re at the point where we feel there’s a good chance to qualify every time out and earn a respectable finish. And we spend just about every dime we have to do the best we can. We’ve been around awhile now so hopefully its enough as I’m confident David can get the job done."

Introducing ..... Jeff Brown and Glenn Richards. Whenever the Advance Auto Parts Modified Super DIRT Series contingent of teams makes the trek to Volusia for Race Weeks activity in February, the states of Delaware and Maryland always boast ample representation in the big-block ranks. The 35th Winternationals is no exception as Brown from Parsonsburg, Md. and Wyoming, Del. driver Richards, both 39, help fill out the record-setting roster of over 50 open-wheel pilots signed up 2006 Florida Tour competition. Jamie Mills, Beau Wilkins and Chuck Tucker also call the First State home while Brown is the lone mover from Maryland.

"If you’re looking for the best learning experience, this is a good place to start," said Brown, who recently began his third season in a big-block after graduating from the AC Delco Modified (crate motor) division ---where he finish fifth in track points--- at Charlie Cathell’s Delaware Int’l Speedway. You’re running with the best and that makes qualifying a big deal down here. Just finding the right combination takes all week and a lot of laps. We’ve been down in the engine department lately but just bought a Finger Lakes (Doug Holmes) motor from Jake Marine and had our (Tony) Feil big-block freshened up over the holidays. We’re planning on making the first Advance Auto Parts show at Hagerstown and run some more in New Jersey if we find some success. For now, getting as much track time as possible will help us down the road," noted Brown, driver of the orange no. 9 Chesapeake Paving/TEO Pro car.

Richards embarked on his big-block Modified rookie campaign in 1998, although like Brown, this week marked his inaugural excursion to gator country. "Everybody always talks about racing in Florida so this year we finally found out what it’s all about," said Richards, who drove Mod Lites (Dwarf) at Delaware from 1996-97 before making the mainstream jump prior to the new millennium. Regular Florida Tour competitor Deron Rust chose to skip this year’s action yet has remained pitside throughout Race Week at VSP helping Richards set up his no. 98 Hatteras Press-Alessi Construction-Coastal Marine/Dirt Wheels chassis. "We learned first-hand how tough the competition really is and the importance of getting the right set-up to have any chance. Changing my driving habits was something I had to do right from the start. And adapting to the changing track conditions from practice time until the consolation round keeps us all busy the whole night. We’re figuring this kind of experience has to give us some kind of edge when we start racing back home in the spring."

The DIRT track action at Volusia will be just as hot and heavy when some of the same Advance Auto Parts Modified Super DIRT Series big-block stars compete in the ’Kart Clash’ at the refurbished go-kart track stationed next door on Feb. 18. Saturday afternoon at 2 p.m. Advance Auto Parts SDS and World of Outlaws Late Model Series touring teams, as well as DIRT Officials and members of the media, will contend in the unique ’Kart Clash’ at the neighboring dirt track, where fans can hang out afterwards with their short-track heroes, collect autographs and take pictures. The racing and autograph session will run until 5 p.m. near the kart track.

POTHOLES

Five DIRT Modified heat races were run off caution-free with 20 of the 47 drivers entered qualifying in just 20 minutes. Three of those preliminary race winners ---Danny Johnson, Brett Hearn, Tim Fuller--- are past Syracuse Eckerd 200 winners, further emphasizing the quality of this year’s record field signed up for competition at Volusia....

The only red flag displayed during the Advance Auto Parts Modified portion of Florida Tour ’06 came during the second consi on Friday night. The Dirtvision.com crew caught the entire incident as it unfolded on the opening circuit of the 10-lap last-chance qualifier. The field of a dozen big-block barn-stormers sped down the backchute following the initial green flag with Stewart Friesen diving too deep down low into turn three and clipping the left front-end of Wayne Jelley’s open-wheel entry. As the contact forced Jelly to check up immediately, Chris Shultz was left little time to react and he too went over the front of Jelley. The sudden impact made by Shultz vaulted his car sideways and the onrushing pack pushed him over until his mangled mount laid upside down on top of David VanHorn’s helpless machine. No injuries were reported.

Fuel and tire cost comparisons were made by a number of traveling teams, with the diversity in markets and specific point fund allocations among the determining factors. On average up north, the Sunoco Blue brand (114 octane) runs between $7.25 and $7.50 gallon yet during Race Weeks at Volusia the local fuel distributor kept a lid on the pump at $6.50. In contrast, while Hoosier Racing Tires are listed around $150.25 in the Northeast, each tread sold for $156.80 at the track tire truck....
