Keystone Klassic 100

Wed - August 03, 2005 -- Lernerville Speedway

Sarver, PA

Author: Tom Skibinski, DIRT Modified Series Reporter

Sarver, PA — August 3, 2005 — The 2005 Advance Auto Parts Modified Super DIRT Series reached the halfway point at Lernerville Speedway. Tim Fuller did what he has done for nearly half of the first 12 races as he rolled on to his fifth tour victory of the season in convincing fashion.

"We weren’t really close to winning the last two times out here and I think it even rained on us," said Fuller, 37, after parking the no. m1 MBF Racing-B&F General Machine/TEO Modified in victory lane for a DIRT MotorSports best 12th time. The Edwards, N.Y. pilot finished fifth in the rained-shortened 1998 Super DIRT Series special at Lernerville after placing 17th the year before. "I definitely like it a lot better this time around."

It had been seven years since DIRT MotorSports™ Modified touring stars last visited Lernerville to confront the best big-block teams from Western Pennsylvania. That proved too long a wait for Fuller and he redeemed himself by capturing the Keystone Klassic 100 Advance Auto Parts Super DIRT Series showdown Wednesday night at the legendary Sarver, Pa. oval.

"This is what we’ve worked for over the past five years, our guys put everything on the line and just can’t get enough credit," said Fuller, following his 59th career big-block Modified win on the DIRT NorthEast circuit. The two-time overall Mr. DIRT 358-Modified champion now has 10 victories in the Advance Auto Parts SDS, doubling his total since the season started. "Bob and Michele (Faust, owners) gave me a chance and stuck behind me and its great when things can work out this way."

For the second straight visit to Lernerville, Chuck Bower and Billy Decker were among the top-three time trialers. Decker was the fastest on June 14 before rain cancelled the event while Bower posted the best time of 16.347 sec. (88.090 mph) in his return aboard the no. 99B Beyea Custom Headers/Bicknell machine. Decker was second quickest Wednesday and Bower stopped the clocks third best back in June. The customary pre-race draw slotted Decker fourth and Bower ninth with local legend Kevin Bolland the last up and the pole-position waiting for him to begin the 100-lap finale.

Veteran New Yorker Alan Johnson preceded Bolland in the draw and joined him on the front row with the lead duo exchanging the point over the opening half-dozen circuits. Johnson led the odd laps and Bolland edged across first during the even rounds before A.J. Slideways strung more than one together beginning with the fifth circuit.

Johnson’s early efforts were slowed on two occasions. First year tour follower Sean Beardsley came to a stop on the front straightaway after contact with Chad Brachmann on lap six and Brian Swartzlander looped his mount on the back chute to force out a second yellow flag on lap eight. The ensuing restart opened the door for sixth-place starter Brett Hearn as he swept around Johnson on the high side exiting turn four.

Green flag laps clicked off at a rapid pace with two distinct grooves developing both high and low. Once the leaders reached traffic it was anybody’s guess which lane offered the fastest way around. Johnson’s choice down low proved to be the right one as he ducked the Sherlock Racing no. Ten CRC Community Rental/TEO entry under Hearn to regain the point on lap 22.

Back-to-back caution periods on laps 24 and 25 for Andy Bachetti, who lost a wheel on the no. 6j JIR Motorsports mount in turn one, and Jimmy Phelps, who stopped in turn three following contact on the back chute in the no. 98H Mohawk Northeast-New England Race Fuels/Troyer ride, kept the 30-car field in check. Hearn took advantage of the lap 25 restart, once again darting past Johnson as they drifted out of turn four.

While Hearn and Johnson dueled up front, the talented trio of Billy Decker, Bolland and Fuller battled lap after lap for top-five positions. In a bold three-wide maneuver on lap 27, Fuller squeezed between Decker in the low lane and a high-flying Bolland to grab third with Bolland’s no. 777 Brighton Hot Dog Shoppe/Bicknell machine slipping over the turn three embankment before returning trackside for a dash out of turn four.

Hearn broke open a 10 car-length lead 30 laps in and by that time Fuller had blasted by Johnson with Decker, tour rookie Stewart Friesen and veteran Pat Ward chasing a straightaway behind. A fifth caution period arrived on lap 37 when Rex King slowed in turn one and left debris on the track before pulling pitside for the remainder. Defending overall Hoosier Tire-Sunoco Race Fuels Mr. DIRT champion Gary Tomkins used this slowdown to make a brief pitstop and returned in 22nd-place the last car on the lead lap.

Fuller wasted little time when the green flag reappeared, shadowing Hearn’s no. 3 Page Trucking/TEO car before forcing the final lead change in another three-wide exhibition. Fuller sandwiched Hearn in the middle as Decker dove low out of turn four and the result put the red m1 mount out front for good as the scoreboard signaled 44 laps complete. The order remained intact at the halfway mark with Elite 11 members Fuller, Hearn, Decker, Ward, Johnson, Matt Sheppard, Friesen, Justin Haers and Steve Paine holding down the first nine spots.

Fuller began the second half of the race by building up a commanding lead with 2/3 of a straightaway put between himself and runner-up Hearn. But as the laps dwindled and traffic steadily increased, the margin slowly began to evaporate with Fuller running a high line and both Hearn and Decker making up ground down low.

With just 10 laps to go, Johnson’s motor suddenly popped as he came out of the fourth corner and yellow lights flashed around the speedway for the seventh and final time. The brief caution period offered a glimmer of hope for Hearn and Decker with five green flag laps still to go, but Fuller quickly pulled the shades back down and sped off to a six car-length victory worth $6,000 to the hottest driver on DIRT. Ward and Paine filled out the front-five while Bert Hard Charger Tom Sears, Jr. (started 22nd), Sheppard, Vic Coffey, Jeff Brownell, Jr. and Haers completed the top-10 positions.

"The first half of the race I wasn’t that good, I was just staying around waiting for the track to slicken up," said Fuller, following his second straight tour triumph in the Keystone State. He posted his last 100-lap victory at Grandview Speedway on July 19 to accompany those at Lowe’s, Cayuga County and Rolling Wheels. "Once I got out front I didn’t really worry too much about traffic. The cautions seemed to come out at the right times and that always helps. Still, things got close at the end with the guys behind me, they’ve been around a lot longer than me and they’re my heroes. I just couldn’t make any mistakes out there, I knew they were around and if I did they’d swallow me up just as fast."

Hearn held on for runner-up honors and his sixth straight top-five tally in Advance Auto Parts SDS competition, moving past Tomkins into second-place in the series point standings through a dozen events. "We’re proud of what we’ve done lately but Tim’s just been so good everywhere," said Hearn, who has rallied from 10th in points after five events despite capturing the series opener at Rolling Wheels Raceway in May. "I felt I was catching up at the end so that last caution certainly hurt any chances. When I finally figured there was no chance of catching Tim I had to go on defense right at the end. It was still a great show, with the track letting you go from far up high on the cushion to way down low the crowd had to like what they saw tonight."

Decker’s quest for his second SDS win of the season aboard John Wight’s no. 91 Gypsum Wholesalers/Bicknell entry fell short once again, but not without moving up another notch on the 2005 points ladder. "I really thought we had the fastest car at one point tonight but it just wasn’t quite enough, close but no cigar ... again," lamented Decker, the 1998 overall Mr. DIRT titlist who was a pre-season favorite to wear a second crown come October. "I wasn’t any good outside and I needed to hit the groove perfect to make up any time down low. That happened only a few times out of every ten. It’s such a competitive bunch out here you just have to be ready to lock horns once time trials start to when the last checkered flag falls. Nobody gives an inch out any time and that’s what makes it fun to be a part of. We’re getting close and that’s about all we can do right now."

Fuller leads the big-block DIRT Modifieds into Central New York for the Finger Lakes Championship at Canandaigua Speedway on Thursday, August 11. He now stands ahead of Hearn by a 961-912 margin in the Advance Auto Parts standings with Decker and 15th-place finisher Tomkins dead-locked for third with 888 points apiece.

* Under the promotion of Albert “Ouch” Roenigk, co-direction of Tom Roenigk and Barbara Bartley, and now owned by DIRT MotorSports, the track’s first Advance Auto Parts SDS event with the current management team proved successful on both sides of the fence. With a good grandstand turnout witnessed for this rescheduled mid-week special, Chuck Bower officially established the modern-day Modified record as he toured the tradition-laden 4/10-mile oval in a time of 16.347 sec. for a one lap average speed of 88.090 mph as the AMB i.t. scoring and timing system was in place.

* A number of Lernerville regulars reached the feature race starting grid including track points leader Dave Murdick who finished 27th with his familar no. 61 Armstrong Internet Cable Service-National Property Inspections/Troyer machine ... points runner-up Jim Weller, Jr. did not return on Wednesday as he was reportedly saving the motor in his no. 31 Liberty Steel Products/Bicknell entry ... Brian Swartzlander has rallied from sixth in points on June 14 to third aboard his no. 83 McCutcheon Enterprises-Precise Racing Products/TEO mount and finished a disappointing 29th in the main event. "Between a lot of specials and rain, we haven’t really had too many point races this year. Lately, we’ve been doing pretty well though" ... Tom Winkle remains fourth in owners Laurel & Pat Smith’ s no. 28 AGX-Bear Run Enterprises/Bicknell ride and broke in his qualifying and loaded up early thus failing to run the 100-lap grind .... On June 14 Kevin Bolland was first in points steering the no. 777 Brighton Hot Dog Shoppe-Northland Ford/Bicknell car, yet a rib injury forced him to miss some point shows while recovering. After challenging the leaders early he was the best area finisher in 16th with all 100-laps completed ... although not a regular anymore, Del Rougeux,Jr. in the no. 20d Vinyl Graphics Unlimited-FK Rod Ends-K&M Performance Filters/Bicknell mount, competed in Lernerville’s premier big-block modified event and finished 17th and was the last driver scored on the lead lap.

* Last time he was at Lernerville on June 14, Justin Hears was slated to make his debut as an Elite 11 member. The 2004 DIRT MotorSports™ Modified Rookie of the Year, Haers, 25, ranked fifth in the point standings going in with a third-place finish at Lowe’s (NC) Dirt Track sandwiched between a ninth-place in the tour opener at Rolling Wheels (NY) Raceway and 11th at Cayuga County Fair (NY) Speedway. Haers steered the no. 3H Phelps Cement Products-Sweeteners Plus/Bicknell entry to a credible 10th-place tally and currently ranks ninth on the SDS points chart.

* Most recently at Lernerville, DIRT MotorSports’ all-time big-block Modified winner Alan Johnson made his inaugural start among the Elite 11. Until the Wednesday show, the Phelps, N.Y. phenom was carrying a Gold Card membership after committing to traveling the entire SDS with the CRC Community Rental-Tri State Roofing/TEO entry numbered Ten owned by Robbie and Randy Sherlock. With the recent dismissal of former E11 mainstay Vic Coffey, A.J. Slideways was the next highest driver in point standings to be offered the opportunity. Coming into Lernerville he had stood sixth on the points chart with a pair of top-five feature finishes scored in the initial 11 races.

* Despite relinquishing is Elite 11 status, Coffey still made a return appearance at Lernerville although going in he was far from confident in putting together a top finish. He began by time trialing fourth fastest in his no. 32c Sweeteners Plus-A&C Performance/Bicknell entry and won the second heat race before filling in 12th after drawing the highest possible number. "We’ve lost about seven motors this year and I’m about one more problem away from sitting out the rest of the year," said Coffey, who was informally relieved of his duties as an Elite 11 driver after reviewing the current circumstances with DIRT MotorSports NorthEast officials prior to the Lernerville event. "The motor we have tonight is a leftover one we bought from Joe Plazek in ’98 and it hasn’t even been freshened in a couple years. All I have after that is a Syracuse motor and the last thing I want to do is bring out to a short track. Being a member of the Elite 11 was good while it lasted but right now I’m just trying to get this monkey off my back. We’re hoping to get caught up in time for when the big fall races come. We’ll still follow as much of the series as possible, I just can’t make a commitment to the whole thing if something else goes wrong. And that’s a responsibility that needs to be honored with such a special group."

* 45 cars registered on June 14 and 42 made an appearance at Lernerville for the second try. Including Jeff Strunk, who won one of the Triple 20s run at Grandview when the SDS race was originally slated for the second Tuesday in June, Rob Kristyak (#00), Jeff Isabell (#7j), Keith Swartzlander (#8g), Steve Pesarek (#27g), Ray Bliss (#27z) and Dale Chronister (#91) showed up for the first time on Wednesday. Isabell was joined on the starting grid by fellow JIR Motorsports team cars of Andy Bachetti (6j), Tom Sears,Jr. (8j) and Sean Beardsley (18). Mark Flick (blown motor), Al Johns (back-up driver), Bob McCreadie and Tim McCreadie (WoO LM racing out West), Jim Weller, Jr. (saving motor), Tom Mattocks, Jr. (too many races), and Pete Simpson did not re-enter.

* Five heats needed to sort out the 42-car field with Fuller, Coffey, Sheppard, Tomkins and Strunk taking checkered flags. Skip Moore rolled out of turn four to bring out a rare red flag as his no. 17m Grossman’s Garage/Bicknell mount caught the wall on the high side in heat #1. Brian Swartzlander and Andy Bachetti copped consolation round qualifiers with the main event taking the initial green flag at 10 p.m.

* Elite 11 members Brett Hearn, Matt Sheppard, Stewart Friesen and newcomer Alan Johnson finished their third straight night of Super DIRT Series competition at Lernerville after back-to-back 358-Modified tour events at Merrittville (Ont.) Speedway and Ransomville (N.Y.) Speedway. Johnson and Hearn finished 1-2 in the 50-lapper at Merrittville on Monday while Sheppard settled for fifth-place and Friesen crossed the line 17th. In Ransomville’s annual Alex Friesen Summer Nationals 75-lapper on Tuesday, Hearn edged Friesen for the win with Johnson placing third and Sheppard scored sixth. Hearn leads Johnson by five markers in the 358 SDS point standings and Sheppard ranks fourth ahead of sixth-place runner Friesen.

The top-15 finishers in the ’Traffic Jam 100’ (July 19) at Grandview Speedway were at the head of the line to share in the unique $3,000 Winner’s Circle fund that has been set aside to be divided among the highest finishing drivers at each event. The distribution of this special $3,000 fund is be based on the feature race finishing order: drivers placing in positions 1-5 will each earn $100, 6th – 10th-place finishers will receive $200 and 11th – 15th will pocket $300. Competitors are required to attend and attempt to qualify for the next Advance Auto Parts SDS event to collect payment of the Winner’s Circle bonus.

By racing at Lernerville, Tim Fuller, Steve Paine and Brett Hearn received $100 each, Alan Johnson, Billy Decker, Gary Tomkins and Jeff Strunk earned $200, while Stewart Friesen, Tom Sears, Jr., Pat Ward and Matt Sheppard pocketed $300. Billy Pauch, Duane Howard, Meme DeSantis and Jamie Mills were no shows.

Upon attempting to qualify at the next event, Canandaigua Speedway on Aug. 11, Fuller, Hearn, Decker, Ward and Paine will collect $100 each, Sears, Sheppard, Coffey, Brownell, and Haers will receive $200, with Todd Burley, Chuck Bower, Jimmy Phelps, Jeff Isabell and Gary Tomkins in line for $300 bonuses.

* It took exactly 16 minutes, 41 seconds for 41 open-wheel entries to conduct time trials with a first time track record set by Chuck Bower in his potent no. Former Mr. DIRT champion Billy Decker stopped the clocks at 16.283 sec. for a one-lap average speed of 88.436 mph around the ultra-heavy 4/10-miler back on June 14 but rain scrapped the clocking. World of Outlaws Sprint Series star Joey Saldana holds the all-time track record of 12.334 sec. (116.750 mph) which he set in May of 2002. World of Outlaws Stacker 2® Late Model Series standout Darrell Lanigan recently established the full-fender standard of 15.072 sec. (95.541 mph) on April 29, 2005.

* Only two Advance Auto Parts Super DIRT Series point races had been run at Lernerville before Wednesday with Danny Johnson taking home to Rochester, New Yorker first-place trophies in both 1997 and ’98. Former Mr. DIRT Pro Stock champion Steve Pesarek was entered in a no. 27g Troyer machine formerly driven by Johnson as well as former big-block pilot Steve Gray.

* The Advance Auto Parts Super DIRT Series returns to Pennsylvania under the promotion of Vince Vicari when big-block DIRT Modified arrives at Williams Grove Speedway on Oct. 16 for the first time since 1992. Brett Hearn captured feature race gold in DIRT’s last tour appearance at the legendary Mechanicsburg, PA oval.

* With RACEceiver now recognized as the Official Driver Communicator of DIRT MotorSports™ in 2005, fans, as well as the competing drivers, were able to hear first hand everything that was happening throughout the entire Lernerville show. A compact radio receiver that conveniently fits into a driver’s pocket, a RACEceiver allows each driver to hear directions from series officials, which greatly enhances the safety and timeliness of events. A similar version available to fans allows RACEceiver users to hear what information series officials are relaying to the drivers.
