Fuller beats the traffic
Bechtelsville, PA — July 19, 2005 — The 8th Annual ’Traffic Jam 100’ on Tuesday was billed as an all-star clash between DIRT MotorSports’ highly touted ’Elite 11’ and the BPG ’Super 7’ from the Penn-Jersey circuit. When the final checkered flag flew it was Elite 11 driver Tim Fuller from Edwards, N.Y. leading a sweep of the top-three spots as he scored his fourth Advance Auto Parts Modified Super DIRT Series victory of the season.
The $6,000 triumph in event promoter Bob Miller’s Thunder on the Hill racing series also returned Fuller and the no. m1 MBF Racing-B&F General Machine/TEO to the top of the Advance Auto Parts SDS point standings in search of the team’s first overall Hoosier Tire-Sunoco Race Fuels Mr. DIRT Modified Championship.
"I’ve always wanted to win here being a track that Bob (Faust, car owner) started out racing at," said Fuller, 37, after tying all-time DIRT big-block win leader Alan Johnson with his ninth feature win of the year. "But we’ve just never been able to finish. All the guys running out here are just so good, we’re fortunate to come away with a win tonight."
Fuller’s biggest break came with less than two laps to go in the century grind when fellow Elite 11 pilot Steve Paine got a nose underneath as the lead duo exited the second turn. Entering the back straightaway side-by-side, the TEO mounts entangled for a few precious seconds before regaining their form in time to take the white flag.
"I just love racing without radios this year," said Fuller, following his .259-second victory over Paine in the closest finish of the 11-race tour to date. His only other top-five tally at Grandview came in the 1999 event. "No one knows exactly where you are to cut you off, but you also don’t know how close anybody is. At the end I got a nudge from Steve and we hooked together. Steve is so professional he just got off the gas instead of letting us spin out together, knowing it was more important to finish."
Past Grandview series winner and Elite 11 mainstay Brett Hearn edged track favorite Billy Pauch for third at the line followed by Duane Howard, the first Pennsylvanian across the line. Pauch and Howard are members of Chad Sinon’s Super 7.
With the possibility of rain lingering throughout the night, race officials moved the program along without interruption. Fast time trialer Frank Cozze also selected the pole in the pre-race draw and jumped out to an early lead to pace the 30-car starting field. Cozze reached traffic by lap eight and survived a scare from back-marker Sean Beardsley three laps later as contact between the pair resulted in a turn one spin by Beardsley.
The restart proved costly for Cozze as he looped his familiar no. 44 Mikronite Technologies-Waite’s General Contractors-Bert Transmission/TEO mount in front of the entire pack just after Pauch stole the lead on lap 11. The multi-car turn four mishap temporarily blocked the track and due to their involvement in the incident, top-five runners Gary Tomkins and Meme DeSantis along with Billy Decker and Matt Sheppard were among those caught up in the wreckage and forced to pick up the back of the field.
The slowing cars of Jeff Brownell (lap 15), Andy Bachetti (lap 21) and Ray Swinehart (lap 29) slowed the action as Pauch wrestled with Fuller for the early lead. After a half-dozen circuits trading paint, Fuller finally ducked under Pauch low out of turn four to forge the final change. At the halfway mark, Fuller and Pauch remained out front with Paine and Super 7 standouts Jimmy Horton and Howard in close pursuit.
Paine grabbed the runner-up slot on lap 62 before the sixth and final yellow flag waved two laps later for Horton as his no. 51m Supreme Welding-Metal Fab Pro Race Shop/Bicknell entry lay bent up at the end of the back straightaway. Horton looked to the outside of Pauch as the two Garden State veterans sped down the back chute. The Pauch machine slid high enough to pinch Horton’s ride against the outside wall and the resulting crash forced the #51m to be cradled off the track.
As the laps dwindled, two separate battles kept the crowd a buzz; the first among Fuller and Paine for the lead and the second for a sparking Pauch, Hearn, Howard and Alan Johnson as they diced lap after lap, high and low for top-five positions. Howard overtook Hearn down the back straightaway on lap 85 while a charging Paine for the first time tested the waters low under Fuller with still 10 to go.
Contact between Fuller and Paine with less than a mile left did anything but silence the grandstand throng while Hearn’s pass of Pauch at the wire continued the fanfare well after the checkered flag unfurled.
"I knew I had a good car tonight so I just tried to be patient and hang around near the front for awhile," said Fuller, who scored four Advance Auto Parts tour victories all of last year and ended the season with a DIRT-best big-block total of 18 feature wins. "The whole race I was really worried about losing the right rear tire. There was so much heat building up I never knew how long it would last."
Despite the obvious disappointment at the end, runner-up Paine found quiet satisfaction with his second straight top-three finish in the Northeast’s premier Modified tour. In the initial 10 series point races, the Waterloo, N.Y. warrior only mustered three top-10 tallies. "I’ve definitely been struggling so far, but I think everything is finally starting to come together," said 2000 Mr. DIRT Modified champion Paine, 44, after following up his third-place finish at Autodrome Drummond (July 11) with a second aboard his no. 7x Tallmadge Tire-Terrell’s Potato Chips-Geneva Homes-Pabst/TEO machine. "We’ve changed some stuff that really didn’t make much sense before but they’re starting to work. I can feel the difference, there’s a whole lot more drive in the car now. Hopefully, we’ll continue to improve, at least one more spot anyway."
The only other driver currently as hot as Fuller is third-place finisher Hearn after recording his fifth straight top-five feature finish in July. "We had a couple DNFs early on but we’ve been clawing our way back up toward the front," said Sussex, N.J. ace Hearn, 46, a five-time Mr. DIRT big-block titlist with a career-high 86 Super DIRT Series triumphs. His two SDS victories in the no. 3 Page Trucking-Gable Auto Stores-Kruger-WLR Construction-TEO Fab./TEO entry were scored in the Rolling Wheels (NY) Raceway opener and at Cornwall (Ont.) Motor Speedway. "I knew I had to make the outside work at the end, everybody seemed to be hugging the low side that was faster. I got past Billy (Pauch) once then he was able to block me low after getting in the accident with Horton. I wish I would have tried him earlier and maybe given the top guys a run before time ran out."
Pauch placed fourth after the contact with Horton on lap 64 broke a radius rod. When the connecting spring rod fell through it produced sparks which brought even more attention to the yellow no. 357 Norm’s Save Station-Davis Insurance Group/Bicknell car over the final 30 laps.
In one of the most colorful Super DIRT Series point parades staged in recent years, Fuller (861 pts) now leads ninth-place finisher and reigning Mr. DIRT points king Gary Tomkins (836) with Hearn (817), Billy Decker (798) and Gypsum Express teammate Pat Ward (758) looming in striking distance through 11 of 24 events.
Advance Auto Parts Super DIRT Series competition returns to Pennsylvania for the rescheduled ’Keystone Klassic 100’ at Lernerville Speedway on Wed., Aug. 3. A complete show is on tap as officials were forced to postpone the June 14 event after rain soaked the Sarver, Pa. oval during time trial qualifications.

* Race promoter Bob Miller’s Thunder on the Hill mid-week special at Grandview Speedway featured the invading DIRT MotorSports’ ’Elite 11’ against the BPG ’Super 7’ and the local Comdial All-Stars. Making up the DIRT ELITE 11 are Tim Fuller, Brett Hearn, Billy Decker, Pat Ward, Matt Sheppard, Vic Coffey, Gary Tomkins Chad Brachmann, Steve Paine, Stewart Friesen and Justin Haers. Representing the BPG SUPER 7 are Jeff Strunk, Jimmy Horton, Billy Pauch, Frank Cozze, Duane Howard, Doug Hoffman and Kenny Brightbill. Coffey was the only Elite 11 member failing to make the trip while Super 7 mainstay Hoffman also missed the show.
Originally penciled in last year on the ’05 Advance Auto Parts Super DIRT Series schedule, the finalization of a tour race at Grandview did not arrive until June 27. One of the happiest to see the July 19 date posted on the 2005 agenda was BPG Racing mogul Chad Sinon. "I lobbied hard for the past few months with Bob Miller and Bobby Hartslief (former DIRT COO) after the great races we saw here the last couple years," said Sinon, 39 on July 20, who spearheaded the creation of the Super 7 and the four-race Comdial Modified Series presented this season at Grandview. Craig VonDohren, Kevin Hirthler and Jeff Strunk shared triple 20-lap victories in the June 14 Series lid-lifter before Fuller became king of the hill on Tuesday. Two $3,000-to-win 30-lap Comdial tour races are slated for Aug. 23 and Oct. 15 at the same Bechtelsville, Pa. oval. "I wanted to run more big-block races at Grandview and tagging along with the Super DIRT Series was a perfect fit. By offering a little extra cash at the end of the year for the Super 7 makes it worthwhile for the drivers as well as the fans. And all of Bob Miller’s promotions are geared towards the people that come through the gate." Joining in along the dirt racing circuit in 1999, Sinon has sponsored as many as 10 different drivers during a single season. His primary focus in ’05 remains with Jeff Strunk (Big Diamond, Grandview, select SDS shows) while Mike Gular (Grandview, Penn-Can), Bobby Trapper (Grandview, Penn-Can) and Ryan Watt (Grandview, select big-block events) divide time on weekends.
Leading both the Comdial big-block Modified Series and Grandview Speedway small-block points standings is popular Pennsylvanian Jeff Strunk. Starting 25th on the grid Tuesday, Strunk rallied to run as high as seventh before settling for 10th at the stripe in the potent no. 88 Chad Sinon Motorsports-BPG Racing/TEO entry. "It was pretty disappointing out there, we just missed on the set up and really stunk it up at the end," said Strunk, 36, who stands 20th in Advance Auto Parts SDS points despite missing five shows. "When the tour guys come to your track you like to think you have an advantage but they’re the ones with all the experience. Still, my expectations were a lot higher. I really wanted to win this one. I won the last two Freedom ’76 races here and they paid $20,000. When the Super DIRT Series is in town it isn’t about the money, you just want to beat the best in the business and they were all here tonight," said Strunk, who chased winner Tim McCreadie and Hearn across the line in last year’s SDS event at Grandview.
* The previous four tour shows resulted in drivers bettering the track standard in qualifying. Frank Cozze ended the streak in ’05, as he posted a one-lap average speed of 81.345 mph (14.752 sec.) around the tacky 1/3-miler to keep intact last year’s mark of 14.635 sec. established by Matt Sheppard.
* By racing at Grandview, Gary Tomkins, Matt Sheppard, Steve Paine, Brett Hearn and Tim Fuller each received $100, Billy Decker, Jimmy Phelps, Alan Johnson and Justin Haers earned $200, while Pat Ward, Chad Brachmann and Jeff Isabell pocketed $300. J.R. Heffner, Yan Bussiere and Mario Clair were no shows. Upon attempting to qualify at Lernerville Speedway on Aug. 3, Fuller, Paine, Hearn, Billy Pauch and Duane Howard will collect $100 each, Johnson, Meme DeSantis, Decker, Tomkins and Jeff Strunk will receive $200, with Stewart Friesen, Tom Sears, Jr., Ward, Sheppard and Jamie Mills in line for $300 bonuses.
* With RACEceiver now recognized as the Official Driver Communicator of DIRT MotorSports™ in 2005, fans, as well as the competing drivers, were able to hear first hand everything that was happening throughout the entire Grandview show. A compact radio receiver that conveniently fits into a driver’s pocket, a RACEceiver allows each driver to hear directions from series officials, which greatly enhances the safety and timeliness of events. A similar version available to fans allows RACEceiver users to hear what information series officials are relaying to the drivers. For more information about RACEceiver, visit www.raceceiver.com, call 866/301-7223, or look for their sales trailers at various events.
