Hearn wins at Cornwall

Cornwall, ONT — July 10, 2005 — Brett Hearn was dogged for nearly three hours on his way to the track. Once at Cornwall Motor Speedway for round #9 of the Advance Auto Parts Modified Super DIRT Series, Hearn sniffed his way to the front then made quick work en route to scoring his second extra-distance tour race victory of the season.

"Just getting to the track was the hardest part today," said Hearn, after extending his DIRT-high career total to 86 Advance Auto Part Series victories. His latest triumph in the Akwesasne Mohawk Casino International 100 was his seventh big-block Modified win of the year and worth $6,000 from the $28,000 cash purse.

"We made a lot of changes all day and hit it just right in the feature when it counted most. It was a good set-up for the track tonight and staying out front once I got there was really the easiest part," Hearn said.

The Canadian Customs patrol was out in full force as traveling teams from the states tried to make their way across for the annual tour visit to the popular quarter-mile oval. Hearn occupied one of a handful of team haulers that was searched from bumper to bumper before gaining access into Canada for the journey to Cornwall.

"Security just tore through everything we had in the whole rig and even sent the dogs in trying to pick up a scent," said Hearn, who easily passed post-race inspection with his no. 3 Page Trucking-Gale Auto Stores-Kruger/TEO entry once in the track confines. "There just seems to be a bigger hassle around these parts every year."

Despite the lengthy delay leading up to race time, a total of 49 racers signed up for time trials with Elite 11 mainstay Matt Sheppard turning the quickest lap of 13.330 sec. for an average speed of 67.517 mph. Open-wheel veteran Alan Johnson joined Sheppard as the top-two locked themselves into the pre-race draw among feature race qualifiers. Hearn was seventh fastest on the clocks and won the fifth heat in dominating fashion before selecting the inside of row two to start the 25-mile Modified main.

With heat number four on the track, a slight drizzle suddenly turned into a downpour. While the rain lasted little more than 10 minutes, the track grounds crew worked feverishly to whip the track back into shape and by 9:30 pm the fourth qualifying event was back under green.

When the 30-car feature race line-up finally reached the track at 11:05, promoter Ron Morin had produced another smooth and tacky surface that would remain that way throughout the entire 100-lap distance. For the second straight tour race Tim Fuller drew the pole-position start yet front row partner Stephane LaFrance bolted out to the early lead and set a commanding pace.

With a few laps under his belt, Fuller was able to slip the no. m1 B&F General Machine, Inc./TEO mount under LaFrance in traffic. He opened up a comfortable advantage over LaFrance, Pat O’Brien, Hearn and Gary Tomkins before a slowing Tom Sears, Jr. forced out the first yellow flag on lap 23. LaFrance crossed the line in first on lap 26 before a second caution period came the next lap, yet Fuller wrestled back the point the following circuit while Hearn put his nose in second.

In a dramatic three-wide maneuver on lap 42, LaFrance charged from third to first out of turn four with Hearn mirroring the move to find himself in second as the lead trio battled across the stripe. Three laps later Hearn sprinted past LaFrance down the back straightaway to forge the final lead just shy of the half way mark. With 50 laps scored it was Fuller remaining third followed by consolation race winner Pat Ward (started 24th), and Johnson who were chased by Elite 11 members Sheppard and defending Mr. DIRT champion Gary Tomkins.

Racing at Cornwall as the tour points leader by just a single marker over Billy Decker, Ward swept high around Fuller to take over third on lap 55. And there he stayed until slowing in turn with mechanical failure to bring out the sixth and final yellow flag with 70 laps complete.

With 25 laps remaining there was only one man on the move and that was current track small-block Modified points leader Dale Planck. After trading in his regular no. 77x 358-Modified for a seat in Brian McDonald’s more potent big-block powered no. 151x back-up East End Auto Parts-West Front Construction/Bicknell mount, Planck first cracked the top-ten by lap 70, then passed both Sheppard and Johnson for fourth-place on 80. But two laps later the Cortland, New Yorker slipped high in the second corner to give back those same two spots.

It took Planck just a half-dozen laps to regain the fourth-place position and six more to get around Fuller for third as the laps dwindled. When the checkered flag finally flew at 11:45 pm Hearn had opened up a 10 car-length advantage over LaFrance with Planck settling for third ahead of Fuller and Johnson.

"You could tell Stephane is a regular out here, he really knew where to run in the early part and was just as fast near the end," said Hearn, following his third tour triumph at Cornwall, his first two logged in 1996 and 2002. He recorded his first Series victory of ’05 in the May 1 lid-lifter at Rolling Wheels (NY) Raceway after apparent winner Bob McCreadie was disqualified in post-race tech for an illegal spoiler. "The track definitely got more tacky after the rain and we figured that in for the last changes that were made. The surface also stayed super smooth and that helped us keep our line and stay together on such a heavy track."

Sporting a DIRT legal 358 c.i. motor in his Group Express-Trick Race Parts/TEO ride, LaFrance was just a few car-lengths from pulling the upset of the season at his Sunday night hometrack. "We’ve struggled a lot so far this year and this really makes up for some of the bad times," said LaFrance, who failed to even qualify for the SDS show a year ago. "We’ve had motor trouble, blowing our good engine before finally getting our back-up together just before this race. I’m very happy to run with guys like Brett and Tim, they do this for a living and I would like to make it my living too. I’d really like to be one of them someday."

Planck is on the verge of earning Elite 11 status although he has only qualified for five of the first nine shows and Sunday’s finish was his first among the top-10. "I can’t thank Slim (Brian McDonald, car owner) enough for giving me this ride tonight," said Planck, who made the switch from his own small-block mount early in the evening. "We made a lot of changes before the feature and just needed a little more time to get the job done. We may have had a winning car tonight but starting so far back in a field this tough is really asking a lot. It would have been nice to have a shot to win at the end but after where we started there’s a lot of satisfaction around here," said Planck, who drove McDonald’s car two other times in ’05 Advance Auto Parts competition.

In one of the closest Super DIRT Series point battles to date, Fuller (681 pts) now leads Tomkins (671) with Decker (654), Ward (646) and now Hearn (642) remaining in striking distance through nine of 24 events.

Advance Auto Parts Super DIRT Series competition continues north of the border for the second straight 100-lapper at Autodrome Drummond (Que.) on Monday, July 11. The only tour race of the year on French soil marks the 17th SDS event staged at the 54 year-old Drummondville oval since 1989.

Cornwall Motor Speedway has been a long-time stomping ground for brothers Pat and Danny O’Brien as well as the Sunday home for the father/son tandems of Laurent and Lee Ladouceur and Ovide and Joel Doiron. The newest team of family members contending weekly at Cornwall in the open-wheel ranks is the husband/wife duo of Dan and Tammy Jalbert. They recently recorded a track first by finishing one-two in their heat race qualifier at Cornwall, the first time that spouses have ever done so in track history. Now in his 16th season of short-track racing, Dan posted both his small-block feature wins at Cornwall in 2001. He graduated from the Sportsman ranks in 1998 and the next year Tammy joined the rookie class at Cornwall. 2005 marks her second year in the DIRT 358-Modified division. Both Jalberts were recognized aboard #5 Hilltop Tent Rentals small-block cars for the Sunday night Super DIRT Series special. Tammy (35 yrs.) normally drives the no. 99t mount boasting a motor with aluminum heads (570 horsepower) but Dan (39 yrs.) decided to put her behind the wheel of his back-up machine that has cast iron heads (600 horses) with only an additional 50 lbs. of weight required.

* For the second straight year Dale Planck has been the man to beat at Cornwall. What makes his success more significant is the fact that last year he became the first American to claim the coveted track points title, capturing a track-best seven feature race wins. He tops the current Cornwall points chart once again, having won four of the first eight main events on the tacky quarter-mile. "I just love this place, its really racy and a lot of fun," said Planck, 35, who steers the no. 77x Quality Concrete-Chiefs Tobacco & Gas Outlet-Native Poker/Bicknell entry on a regular basis at Cornwall. With an ultra-moist track surface for the Super DIRT Series special, Planck climbed aboard Brian McDonald’s back-up no. 151 East End Auto Parts-West Front Construction/Bicknell after time trials. The Cortland, N.Y. pilot made the feature race starting line-up through the consolation round. "I’ve done well here and the track officials have been great to work with and the fans always show a lot of support. I think they’re still my fans, I haven’t got booed yet," Planck added.

* In the wake of the tragic bombings in London, Canadian customs check points were lengthy for touring stars Brett Hearn and Tim Fuller along with DIRT officials Chip Burdick (director) and Bob Dini (tech). Both officials were forced to turn around and drop off all their race-related equipment in a nearby restaurant parking lot in Ogdensburg (NY) before arriving at Cornwall minutes before the start of Modified time trials. Elite 11 pilot Vic Coffey was less fortunate as he was forced to remain stateside due to improper paper work and a blemish on his driving record that is considered more significant north of the border.

* Ironically, the no. 39 Sweeteners Plus/Bicknell entry built for Coffey’s teammate Tim McCreadie was waiting for Coffey in the pits. Second-generation driver McCreadie was not in attendance at Cornwall on Sunday after celebrating over the weekend with a pair of World of Outlaws Stacker 2® Late Model Series victories at Hagerstown (Md.) Speedway. In the first $10,000-to-win 30-lap preliminary race on Friday, McCreadie started outside the top-10 and brought the crowd to its feet with a last lap pass of another big-block runner, Ricky Elliottt from Seaford, Del. McCreadie began the 58th Anniversary special in 8th-place on Saturday and grabbed the lead for good on lap 31 of the 58-lapper en route to collecting the $15,000 top prize.

* Half of the top-15 finishers in the Mr. DIRT Track USA main event at Lebanon Valley Speedway on July 7 made their way to the head of the line at Cornwall to share in the unique $3,000 Winner’s Circle fund that has been set aside to be divided among the highest finishing drivers at each event. The distribution of this special $3,000 fund is based on the feature race finishing order: drivers placing in positions 1-5 will each earn $100, 6th – 10th-place finishers will receive $200 and 11th – 15th will pocket $300. Competitors are required to attend and attempt to qualify for the next Advance Auto Parts SDS event to collect payment of the Winner’s Circle bonus.

By racing at Cornwall, Andy Bachetti and Brett Hearn each received $100, Billy Decker, Stewart Friesen, Pat Ward, and Matt Sheppard earned $200, while Gary Tomkins and Justin Hears pocketed $300. Valley regulars Kenny Tremont, Wayne Jelley, Eddie Marshall, Donnie Corellis, Steve Hough, Mike King and Paul Gilardi were no shows. Upon attempting to qualify the next day at Autodrome Drummond on July 11, Hearn, Stephane LaFrance, Dale Planck, Tim Fuller and Alan Johnson will collect $100 each,

Sheppard, Tomkins, Jimmy Phelps, Friesen and Hears will receive $200, with Kyle Jacobs, Roy Tarbell, Laurent Ladouceur, Decker and Steve Paine in line for $300 bonuses.

Super DIRT Series Summer Slate: Recent 2005 Advance Auto Parts SDS updates include the return of the ’Traffic Jam 100’ at Grandview Speedway’s high-banked one-third miler on Tues., July 19. Gates will open at 5 p.m. with race time set for 7:30 p.m. Advance tickets are on sale now for Adults ($20) and Children 6-11 ($5), while children under the age of 6 will be admitted for free. In addition, Wednesday, August 3 has been established as the make up date for the Advance Auto Parts Modified Super DIRT Series event at Lernerville Speedway that was postponed due to poor weather conditions on June 14. Finally, on the heels of these two changes, track officials cancelled the Series event scheduled for Tri-City (Pa.) Speedway on July 31 leaving nearby Lernerville Speedway on August 3rd to host the only series race in the region.

* With RACEceiver now recognized as the Official Driver Communicator of DIRT MotorSports™ in 2005, fans, as well as the competing drivers, were able to hear first hand everything that was happening throughout the entire Cornwall show. A compact radio receiver that conveniently fits into a driver’s pocket, a RACEceiver allows each driver to hear directions from series officials, which greatly enhances the safety and timeliness of events. A similar version available to fans allows RACEceiver users to hear what information series officials are relaying to the drivers. For more information about RACEceiver, visit www.raceceiver.com, call 866/301-7223, or look for their sales trailers at various events.
