Tremont ’Mr. DIRT Track, USA’ In Valley’s Advance Auto Parts Series Title Race

By Tom Skibinski, DIRT Modified Series Reporter

West Lebanon, NY — July 7, 2005 — Kenny Tremont captured the prestigious Eckerd 200 on the Syracuse Mile in 1999, finished second on three occasions and even ran out of fuel twice while leading on the final lap in the October ordeal. Thursday night he may have gotten one back as he held off defending race winner Andy Bachetti in a Syracuse motor test session to capture his fourth ’Mr. DIRT Track, USA’ Advance Auto Parts Super DIRT Series showdown at Lebanon Valley (NY) Speedway.

Tremont’s second win of the season was his 13th Super DIRT Series triumph and worth $6,000 from the $28,000 cash purse.

"Home track advantage is always nice but it doesn’t always work out this way in the end," said Tremont, 43, Lebanon Valley’s all-time feature win leader with 106 victories and a track best 12 season point championships. The West Sand Lake, NY open-wheel veteran led 71 of 100 laps aboard his potent no. 115 S&S Asphalt-Darcy Construction-Doherty Bros. Construction/Bicknell entry powered by the same Ken Tremont, Sr. prepared motor used every weekend at the high-banked West Lebanon oval. "We were fortunate to have a good starting spot but any win is a good one for us nowadays."

For the second straight Series event at Lebanon Valley, Bachetti turned the quickest lap in time trials to once again establish himself as the man to beat. The Sheffield, Mass. speedster blistered the high-banked half-miler last September with a one-lap track record of 91.626 mph (19.645 sec.) and this time around, using his trusty PMC chassis with a brand new Pat Morrison powerplant built primarily for Super DIRT Week, stopped the clocks at 20.142 sec. (89.366 mph) which was still better than the 40 other teams that followed.

Tremont was 16th fastest in the field yet finished third in his heat and drew outside-pole to join front row partner and tour regular Tim Fuller to begin the 100-lap main. Fuller set the 18th quickest time and was the last to draw after also placing third in his own qualifier. I’m pretty happy just getting into the draw here as its a tough track to do well on if you’re just visiting," Fuller said before the race. "It’s nice to start up front but I’m just looking for a top-five finish to make my night."

As expected, Fuller jumped ahead early steering the no. m1 MBF Racing-B&F General Machine/TEO mount and seemed destined for a solid top-five tally with Valley regulars Tremont, Ron Dwyer, Bachetti and track points leader Brett Hearn in tow. That order remained intact until the no. 88 Dwyer machine had the motor ’pop’ as it sped down the front straightaway to bring out the first of six yellow flags.

Fuller continued to set a comfortable pace with weekend rivals Tremont and Bachetti dicing for the second spot while Hearn and Wayne Jelley moved in to challenge. A quarter of the way through Fuller began to gradually lose momentum and Tremont finally slid low in turn four to make what would be the final lead change on lap 30.

Bachetti mirrored the move and secured the runner-up slot the next lap. "I thought Tim had us covered pretty good but then he started getting a little loose," Tremont said afterwards in victory lane. "He’s a top traveler and always seems to have a good set-up wherever he runs. We were expecting a longer battle up front but he just faded and we stayed good to the end."

While Tremont and Bachetti waged war lap after lap, on occasion running three-wide in traffic to keep their spot, Fuller settled into the show position until a flat tire ended his bid for that elusive top-five finish on lap 47. With Fuller suddenly out of the picture at the halfway mark, Tremont and Bachetti were chased by Hearn, Jelley and Eddie Marshall --- an order that would remain unchanged for the final 25 miles. Big-block Modified rookie Stewart Friesen, Lebanon Valley local Steve Hough, former track points champion Billy Decker, and ’Elite 11’ members Chad Brachmann and Pat Ward filled out the top-10 with 50 laps complete.

Fuller managed to rejoin the back of the pack after his pit crew successfully replaced the soft shoe without losing a lap, but he pulled pitside for the remainder on lap 73 after losing a brake rotor. Following brief slowdowns after the cars of Dave Leckonby (lap 60), Brachmann (lap 71) and J.R. Heffner (lap 77) were plagued by mechanical failures, the field remained bunched on each restart which only continued to tease those that envisioned a late-race duel with the leaders.

Tremont and Bachetti were no match for the pack left behind and seemed to pull away at will as the closing laps dwindled. While Bachetti often nosed his no. 4 Albraeda Waste LLC-Bachetti Auto Sales/PMC ride underneath in the odd turns, Tremont was able to slingshot off the even corners and keep the door closed each time. The final yellow flag flew when Central New Yorker Jimmy Phelps dropped a cylinder on lap 93 yet Bachetti still fell four car-lengths shy in the five lap dash that sent Tremont on his way to the winner’s circle.

"My car was a little off tonight so he held me off, and that’s what (racing’s) all about," said Bachetti, 29, a 15-time feature race winner on the DIRT big-block circuit with seven registered at Lebanon Valley. "Kenny definitely knows this place a lot better than me and he really showed his experience getting around. He raced me clean all night. I had extra-hard tires on tonight, maybe we could’ve gone with the hard (compound) but you can’t really say what might have changed."

The best view in the house belonged to third-place finisher Hearn as he witnessed the lead pair contending for the lead for nearly three-quarters of the race. "I just didn’t have anything for the top two cars tonight," said Hearn, who entered his regular Saturday night ride, the red no. 1 Gable Auto Stores-Kruger Concrete Pump/TEO machine, in place of the blue no. 3 Page Trucking-Gable Auto Stores-Kruger-WLR Construction-TEO Fab./TEO car that had carried him through the initial seven tour events. "I have to thank the guys at Page Trucking for letting me use our regular Valley car. Its pretty hard to come in and set up a car for just one race so this was our best chance for a top finish. We just came up a couple spots short tonight."

Advance Auto Parts Series stars finished behind top-five runners Jelley and Marshall, with Billy Decker (6th), Stewart Friesen (7th), Pat Ward (8th) and Matt Sheppard (10th) sandwiching second-generation driver Donnie Corellis (9th) on the final scoresheet. Fuller (596 pts) finished 23rd and dropped from first to fourth in one of the closest Super DIRT Series points battle ever, with Ward (601) now leading Decker (600) and defending overall Hoosier Tire-Sunoco Race Fuels Mr. DIRT champion Gary Tomkins (599) through eight of 24 events.

Advance Auto Parts Super DIRT Series competition moves north of the border for back-to-back 100-lappers at Cornwall (Ont.) Motor Speedway on Sunday, July 10 and Autodrome Drummond (Que.) on Monday, July 11. The unique Canadian twin-bill marks Cornwall’s 11th tour event beginning in 1994 while Drummond staged the first of its 16 previous SDS races in 1989.

* Reigning Syracuse Sunoco/Aplus 150 champion Wayne Jelley was using the same car that carried him to the prestigious 358-Modified title race victory last October, only this time a big-block motor from Dan Bedell was used in place of the potent Jack Boyd small-block powerplant. "Don’t let anyone fool you, Syracuse is still probably the biggest event around," said Jelley, 45, the younger brother of recent DIRT MotorSports Hall of Fame inductee Butch Jelley. "Winning last fall has already turned my career around. I drive more relaxed and now I realize that I can run with anybody. Everyone’s really the same, just a matter of who hits on the right set-up at that time. My sponsors have also picked up their support and the contingencies alone from Syracuse helped finance a brand new PMC, one that should be ready in a few weeks.

"My next goal is the track championship here and Brett (Hearn, 3-time defending champion) is still the guy you have to beat week in and week out. We seem to start side-by-side every week and both know its important to try and get ahead of the other one first. And if I can win more like Brett I’ll trade the cheers for boos anytime, that means I’m doing good and you can’t be sorry for that," added Jelley, who joins Hearn and Tremont as the only repeat winners at The Valley in 2005..

* Andy Bachetti also holds the dream of winning on the Syracuse Mile and his runner-up finish on Thursday was recorded with the same Pat Morrison-prepared motor that he plans to utilize at Super DIRT Week in October. "Winning at Syracuse has always been a goal, I’m sure for a lot of other drivers as well," said Bachetti, who captured both Advance Auto Parts Modified SDS wins at Lebanon Valley held last season in August and September. He debuted the Morrison engine the prior Saturday on the high banks. "This car is really fast, doesn’t seem to matter the distance, the longer the better. And that’s a good thing for a 200-mile race at Syracuse." In the meantime, Bachetti is teaming with JIR Motorsports owner Jeff Isabell for competition during the remainder of the ’05 Advance Auto Pasts SDS. "We hope to have some new motors and new (Bicknell) chassis by mid-July to use at Grandview (Speedway, Pa.). We’ll still use the old equipment this weekend for the Canadian swing but shouldn’t really expect too much," noted Bachetti, whose JIR Motorsports teammates include Tom Sears, Jr., Sean Beardsley and Isabell himself in the four-car parade across state lines.

* One driver not in competition was former Advance Auto Parts Modified Super DIRT Series regular and 1989 Syracuse Eckerd 200 Rookie of the Race Jeff Trombley. Sidelined by a compressed fracture of the T-3 vertebrae (between the shoulder blades) suffered in an accident at Fonda (NY) Speedway on May 28, Trombley remains upbeat in the midst of a length recovery period that has curtailed all previous race plans. "The doctor said in about six months I should be back to 100%," said Trombley, 47, the popular pilot from Altamont, N.Y. for many seasons recognized aboard the no. 21j big-block entry who viewed the Lebanon Valley action from high above in the Team Goewey suite. "The biggest problem is trying to keep busy and finding things to do. I let Mark (Kislowski, Sportsman driver) store his car at my house and I get to work on it. I’ve also been helping Jack and Ronnie Johnson when I can. I’m already to go next season with a brand new TEO car for ’06, a car I never even got around to using last year. Everything should be a go by the time next season rolls around."

Numbers Game:

* In competition Thursday at Lebanon Valley was Vic Coffey, not in his customary no. 32c Sweeteners Plus-A&C Speedworld/Bicknell machine but inside the red and yellow no. 39 Modified normally wheeled by teammate and World of Outlaws Stacker 2® Late Model Series ’Dirty Dozen’ driver Tim McCreadie. Power steering problems in his own no. 32c ride prompted the switch ..... So far recognized throughout the ’05 Super DIRT Series in the blue no. 3 Page Trucking car, Brett Hearn was more comfortable in his red no. 1 Gable Auto Stores machine for the century grind on his home soil ..... Run by Pennsylvanian Doug Hoffman in the Series event held at New Egypt (NJ) Speedway in June, the no. 51m Supreme Welding-Metal Fab Pro Race Shop/Bicknell mount co-owned by the Michaels Bros. and Chris Watson is set to carry New Jersey veteran Jimmy Horton for as many of the remaining SDS events as possible. To date, Horton has driven the no. 42 Gross Trucking/Bicknell and no. 901 J&D Trucking-Hewlett Motorsports/TEO machines in ’05 Super DIRT Series competition ..... Bucking traditional family values with the expulsion of the no. 57, Donnie Corellis has taken on the number 21 for his Rifenburg Construction mount this season, hoping his oldest daughter Julia’s birthdate of 7/14 (7+14=21) adds up to more trips to victory lane ..... Lebanon Valley legend Dave Leckonby opened the season with his no. 3d PMC mount before a crash forced him to use the back-up no. 66 Bicknell ride that carried him to his 28th career LV victory on June 25. Finishing a new car just in time for Thursday’s special, Leckonby unveiled the brand-new no. 44 Bert Transmission-C&R Racing-FK Bearings/PMC machine only to post a DNF after time trialing fourth fastest.

* Valley regulars Ron Dwyer, Dave Leckonby and Eddie Marshall scored the first three heat race victories while former Mr. DIRT Sportsman champion and current ’Elite 11’ member Chad Brachmann won the fourth and final qualifier. But it was luck of the draw that counted most as among the last of 14 drivers to draw, previous Advance Auto Parts SDS points leader Tim Fuller selected the pole-position for the 100-lap finale to start alongside all-time track feature winner Kenny Tremont. Dwyer drew third, Brachmann 10th, Marshall 13th and Leckonby 14th while fast time-trialer Andy Bachetti hand-picked the fifth starting slot in the 31-car field.

* Among the 2005 Lebanon Valley feature winners participating were first-time winners Paul Gilardi and Brian Berger, open-wheel veteran Dave Lecknonby, who recently posted his 21st DIRT big-block Modified victory on the High Banks, and second-generation chauffeur Donnie Corellis, who won the ’05 season-opener. Following many years of carrying his father Tommy Corellis’ patented no. 57 on his side-panels, Donnie recently re-numbered his Rifenburg Construction-Beer Belly Bob’s Beverage Center/PMC entry to ’21’ in honor of his daughter Julia, who turns five on July 14 --- adding the 7/14 digits from the date together to equals 21.

* DIRT Modified drivers Tim McCreadie and Billy Decker fared well in the World of Outlaws Stacker 2® Late Model Series main event held at Delaware Int’l Speedway on the night before Lebanon Valley’s Mr. DIRT Track, USA title race. Late Model lifer Darrell Lanigan copped the 50-lapper worth 10G on July 6, finishing ahead of McCreadie, Scott Bloomquist, Decker and Josh Richards. Still active big-block Modified pilot Ricky Elliottt placed 14th in his home state in the full-fender finale.

*The top-15 finishers in the Firecracker 100 at Rolling Wheels Raceway on July 4 were at the head of the line at Lebanon Valley to share in the unique $3,000 Winner’s Circle fund that has been set aside to be divided among the highest finishing drivers at each event. The distribution of this special $3,000 fund will be based on the feature race finishing order: drivers placing in positions 1-5 will each earn $100, 6th – 10th-place finishers will receive $200 and 11th – 15th will pocket $300. Competitors are required to attend and attempt to qualify for the next Advance Auto Parts SDS event to collect payment of the Winner’s Circle bonus.

By racing at Lebanon Valley, Tim Fuller, Jimmy Phelps, Gary Tomkins, Billy Decker and Brett Hearn each received $100, Pat Ward, Chuck Bower, Chad Brachmann and Alan Johnson received $200, while Justin Hears, Steve Paine, teammates Tom Sears, Jr. and Sean Beardsley, and Stewart Friesen pocketed $300. Jack johnson was a no show. Upon attempting to qualify at the next event, Cornwall (Ont.) Speedway on July 10, Kenny Tremont, Andy Bachetti, Hearn, Wayne Jelley and Eddie Marshall will collect $100 each, Decker, Friesen, Ward, Donnie Corellis and Matt Sheppard will receive $200, with Steve Hough, Tomkins, Haers, Mike King and Paul Gilardi in line for $300 bonuses.

Revised Super DIRT Series Schedule Reminder: Recent 2005 Advance Auto Parts SDS updates include the return of the ’Traffic Jam 100’ at Grandview Speedway’s high-banked one-third miler on Tues., July 19. Gates will open at 5 p.m. with race time set for 7:30 p.m. Advance tickets are on sale now for Adults ($20) and Children 6-11 ($5), while children under the age of 6 will be admitted for free. In addition, Wednesday, August 3 has been established as the make up date for the Advance Auto Parts Modified Super DIRT Series event at Lernerville Speedway that was postponed due to poor weather conditions on June 14. Finally, on the heels of these two changes, track officials cancelled the Series event scheduled for Tri-City (Pa.) Speedway on July 31 leaving nearby Lernerville Speedway on August 3rd to host the only series race in the region.

* With RACEceiver now recognized as the Official Driver Communicator of DIRT MotorSports™ in 2005, fans, as well as the competing drivers, were able to hear first hand everything that was happening throughout the entire Lebanon Valley show. A compact radio receiver that conveniently fits into a driver’s pocket, a RACEceiver allows each driver to hear directions from series officials, which greatly enhances the safety and timeliness of events. A similar version available to fans allows RACEceiver users to hear what information series officials are relaying to the drivers. For more information about RACEceiver, visit www.raceceiver.com, call 866/301-7223, or look for their sales trailers at various events.
