Fuller wins the Firecracker

Elbridge, NY — July 4, 2005 — Not everyone celebrates the holidays. Tim Fuller wishes every day was the Fourth of July as he dominated the Firecracker 100 at Rolling Wheels Raceway for the second straight year and earned $6,000 for his third Advance Auto Parts Super DIRT Series victory of the season. The 2004 DIRT Driver of the Year joins Bob McCreadie (7), Danny Johnson (5), Jack Johnson (5), Will Cagle (5), Brett Hearn (4) and Alan Johnson (2) as the only repeat winners in the 36-year race history.

"We’ve had some pretty good holidays around here lately," said Fuller, 37, following his second feature win during the extended Independence Day celebration. He opened the weekend with his third triumph of the season at Brewerton Speedway on Friday, then finished second to both Scott Prentice at Fulton Speedway on Saturday and Matt Sheppard at Cayuga County Fair Speedway on Sunday before returning to victory lane at Rolling Wheels on Monday.

"We’re still snowballing it from last year and we have our weekly tracks pretty much dialed in right now. We’ve really got the whole package going on. Bob’s (Faust, car owner) even here tonight on a rare visit and that makes first place even more special," said Fuller, who last year captured feature races at Brewerton, Cayuga County and Rolling Wheels during the same four-day stretch. His first two tour victories in 2005 were registered at Lowe’s Dirt Track (May 25) and Cayuga County (May 29) over the Memorial Day Week.

A year ago Fuller was even more decisive in his holiday jaunt at Rolling Wheels, setting the current track record (20.146 sec.) in time trials before leading all 100 laps en route to the first of four Series victories. On Monday he was still fourth fastest while Chuck Bower turned the quickest lap of 20.321 sec. for an average speed of 110.723 mph around the spacious 5/8-mile clay oval.

Sussex, N.J. speedster Brett Hearn, who won the ’05 Super DIRT Series opener at Rolling Wheels on May 1, timed seventh fastest and earned the pole-position start through luck of the draw. Fuller filed right behind in the third slot when the 31-car field charged under chief starter Dave Farney’s initial green flag.

As expected, Hearn jumped out to the early lead. Rather unexpected was the arrival of the first yellow flag 30 laps later when the no. 74 Smith Bros. Concrete car driven by Danny Johnson suffered a flat left rear tire. Fuller had diced with Vic Coffey until securing second on lap 12 and took his first lead from Hearn a dozen laps later. While Fuller preferred the low line in the no. m1 MBF Racing-B&F General Machine/TEO machine, Hearn found the high side to his liking throughout most of the event in his own no. 3 Page Trucking/TEO mount. On the lap 35 restart Hearn regained the point from Fuller as they raced side by side under the frontstetch flagger’s stand.

"Any time there’s a caution when Brett’s around you know he’s going to come out of it with some kind of advantage," Fuller said. "He’s always dialing in the car and knows what he needs to make it work better given enough time. He just ran right by me on the restart but I was still comfortable with the car once we got more laps in."

Back under green flag conditions Fuller shadowed the ’corporate jet’ until once again ducking low to force the final lead change as the two TEO machines straddled the stripe to complete lap 44. Hearn made a rare miscue on lap 49, sliding high off the track in turn one to drop into fourth and at the midway mark Troyer Team driver Jimmy Phelps settled into second ahead of Matt Sheppard, Hearn and early season Series points leader Pat Ward.

The top-ten running order remained intact for much of the second half with the exception of defending Hoosier Tire-Sunoco Race Fuels Mr. DIRT champion Gary Tomkins and 1998 overall DIRT big-block Modified points king Billy Decker. Before the feature race even began Tomkins relinquished his fifth-place assignment as a faulty starter required his no. 1 Elaine James Motorsports mount to be pushed on to the track where he picked up last in the field.

Halfway through the century grind Decker ran seventh after starting 13th while Tomkins rallied into 11th yet was hardly content despite improving 20 places. With 40 to go Tomkins had caught Decker and when the second caution period arrived on lap 68 due to a spin by Central New York runner Steve Hulsizer, the pair was scored seventh and eighth respectively as only 15 cars remained on the lead lap.

Before the action resumed, Vic Coffey slowed to a stop in turn two. The track was quickly cleared yet on the first green flag lap third-place runner Sheppard suddenly slowed in turn three with front suspension damage to incur the third and final caution. When the dust cleared Decker was contending for a top-five finish with Tomkins ready to unleash a late-race attack.

Decker swept around Ward to secure fourth-place with 15 laps left while Tomkins crept into sixth past Bower with still 10 to go and disposed of Ward four laps later. Decker sped past third-place Hearn on lap 97 and Tomkins mirrored the maneuver the following circuit. Coming down to take the checkered flag, Fuller had opened up a half straightaway advantage over Phelps with Tomkins edging Decker for third at the line and Hearn hanging on for fifth.

"Without radios you’re never quite sure where anybody is out there anymore," said Fuller, following his eighth feature win of the season. After pacing the entire DIRT organization last year with 18 big-block wins, the Edwards, N.Y. wheelman trails only Alan Johnson (9) near the midway mark of the 2005 campaign. "I had one of my guys signaling to stay low at the end so I kept the car inside and avoided any surprizes."

Fuller remains the only repeat winner in the first seven Advance Auto Parts SDS events, with two more top-five tallies giving him a tour best total of five.

For runner-up Phelps, it was his first top-five feature finish since taking over for Chad Brachmann in the no. 98h Mohawk Northeast-New England Race Fuels/Troyer ride in mid-June. "I couldn’t be much happier, the car was just awesome tonight," said Phelps, who, steered the only Troyer chassis to qualify for the 100-lap main event. "The crew just did everything right tonight, Billy Colton and the guys from H&H deserve all the credit for hitting on the set-up. We ran so good for so long I thought we had something for Tim at the end but he was a little bit better. The track got narrow at the end so we’re satisfied with a solid second-place run."

Tomkins needed all 100 laps to complete his charge from 31st to third, nipping Decker on the final circuit to conclude his bonzai run. "I finally had a car we could win with and something still managed to go wrong," said Tomkins, who joined Fuller in leap-frogging over sixth-place finsiher Pat Ward in the Series points standings. "Woulda, coulda, shoulda, we still finished third and there’s nothing you can do about that. We’re really happy with two good finishes after getting a freshened motor back. A lot can happen in so many Series races so we’re happy to stay near the front despite all the early setbacks."

Lebanon Valley Speedway extends the Fourth of July holiday festivities as the West Lebanon, N.Y. oval hosts the 30th Budweiser 100 Mr. DIRT Track USA title race July 7.

* It was recently announced that DIRT MotorSports will be relocating its operation offices from Colorado Springs, Colorado to the corporate headquarters in Norman, Oklahoma. Led by Shane Carson, race event promoter and sprint car driver with more than 27 years’ industry experience, who has been named VP Race Operations, several key management and staff within the operations office will be relocating to Oklahoma. In connection with this transition, DIRT Chief Operating Officer Bobby Hartslief, who was based in Colorado Springs, has been relieved of his duties with the Company. The consolidation of operations to the Norman headquarters is an important part of the Company’s strategy to streamline operations and administrative functions, and better position the Company to effectively manage its growth. “We’re confident that the relocation of the operations office to Oklahoma will enhance the Company’s level of communication and performance with our team owners, drivers, promoters, track owners, sponsors and our most importantly, our dedicated fans,” said Joe Dickey, Chief Administrative Officer. “We will strive to make this a seamless transition that will positively affect every aspect of our business.” Added DIRT Chairman and CEO Paul A. Kruger, "Our national, regional and weekly DIRT racing series continue to be on the road and focused on the ongoing and exciting battle for championship funds. For the fans it will be business as usual.”

* It’s also business as usual for JIR Motorsports owner Jeff Isabell despite the recent split between himself and former team manager Eric Kingsley. "It was a mutual deal," said Isabell, who began the season with inaugural ’Elite 11’ member Danny Johnson, at RWR entered for the second straight tour show in the no. 74 Smith Bros. Concrete Foundations/TEO ride. Isabell’s four-car team was represented at Rolling Wheels by Andy Bachetti (#7j), Tom Sears,Jr. (#8j), Sean Beardsley (#18) and Jeff in the former no. 9j Bicknell entry driven by Bob McCreadie. The familiar no. 9 Kinney Drugs Store-Syracuse Frame Service-F.X. Caprara Car Companies/Bicknell machine filled in the 43-car field with ’Barefoot’ Bob back aboard. "I was expecting Jeff to buy me out from the beginning, so it was a financial decision on my part," said Kingsley, who is still uncertain about his immediate plans although he was around on Monday to help out the McCreadie team if needed. "Everything is still up in the air right now, I don’t have any specific plan in mind. Awhile back I was considering teaming up with Kevin (Bates, ’05 Mr. DIRT Sportsman contender) in a big-block this year but the timing just wasn’t right. Maybe next year, although a lot can still happen between now and then."

* Headlining the DIRT big-block Modified tour rookie crop in 2005 are talented Canadian chauffeur Stewart Friesen and young Pennsylvanian Dan Vauter. Friesen made a costly rookie mistake at Rolling Wheels, letting his father Jamie take the no. 20 Madsen Motorsports car through pre-race tech. The result was a broken right rear torsion bar even before the car made it trackside for competition! "We’re getting there, little by little a bit faster every week," said the younger Friesen, 21, selected as a member of the ’Elite 11’ in just his first big-block campaign. The third-generation pilot from Niagara-on-the-Lake, ONT proved to be an instant success last season in 358-Modified competition, capturing a DIRT best 12 small-block victories as well as a track point championship en route to placing fourth in the overall 2004 Mr. DIRT 358-Modified point standings with the help of four Super DIRT Series triumphs. "We’ve been fast but we’re still trying out a lot of different things and just missing a little on the set-ups. Right now I’m running a little below my expectations, but nobody likes to run in the back." Friesen has posted two top-10 finishes in the first seven events, with his tour best eight-place registered at Cayuga County Fair (NY) Speedway during Memorial Day Weekend.

While much of the attention has gone to Friesen, many of the tour regulars have taken notice of Forest City, Pa. upstart Vauter who turns 20 on July 23. He made a big splash at Volusia (Fla.) Speedway Park’s Race Weeks in 2004, qualifying for two of three feature events in his first-ever venture down south. His return this past February netted him four starts and an 11th-place best. "For the past three years I’ve planned to run the Advance Series and now my motor program is decent enough where I can follow the whole tour," said Vauter, who continues to wheel his no. 85 Community Bank & Trust/Bicknell entry around the DIRT NorthEast circuit. "Winning a race is definitely a goal but being competitive is the biggest concern. Everytime we qualify for a Series race its a good show. Right now we’re looking to gain more experience, there’s no equipment issues to worry about. Whenever I get near one of those Elite drivers I just try to follow them along, check out their lines and watch how they work in traffic. Maybe next year I’ll be close to making the team." A weekly contender at Fulton (NY) Speedway, Vauter has qualified for four of the six Advance Auto Parts SDS races entered, crossing the line at Hagerstown (Md.) Speedway in a tour best 14th-place.

* Following his stellar Super DIRT Series performance at New Egypt (NJ) Speedway where he finished second to Billy Pauch, Ryan Godown quickly caught the eye of veteran car owner Nick Noll. However, the Noll/Godown duo made its ’05 tour debut at Rolling Wheels with the 29 year-old Ringoes, N.J. driver failing to qualify for the 100-lap main; Godown’s only other appearance at the ’Fast Track’ was in 2001, the same year he won the Sportsman Championship at Super DIRT Week in Syracuse. "I always read the news and saw an article that Ryan stated he wished he could follow the tour," said Noll, a long time owner whose New Foundland, Pa.-based Growers Garden business is the primary backer of the no. 6n Growers Garden & Greenhouse/Speed Palace ride. His biggest notoriety came last October after his driver Bobby Varin scored an apparent 4th-place finish in DIRT’s most prestigious Modified event, the Eckerd 200 on the Syracuse (NY) Mile. Varin’s valiant run was wiped out when the car came up light ---lost a weight during a mid-race tangle--- on the scales even before the customary post-race inspection. "Obviously, I think Ryan’s got the talent, he just needs to get out and travel to do well. I’d love to make a lot more of the tour shows but the major problem has always been finding help. I’m having a brand new Speed Palace car and Precision motor built for Syracuse, I really want to redeem myself in the big one." Noll opened the season with a return visit to Florida for a second straight year as a car owner after Varin replaced Grant Hilfiger behind the wheel.

* Open-wheel veteran J.R. Crouse from Nazareth, Pa. made his first Advance Auto Parts Super DIRT Series stop of the year at Rolling Wheels. Looking for more experience on the slick tracks in extra-distance events, Crouse was shaking down the no. 4b Tauschman Special attempting to qualify for the annual century grind in Elbridge. "It’s just a hit or miss situation now, maybe next year we can follow more of the Series," said Crouse, a Southern Tier regular at Five Mile Point (NY) Speedway on Saturdays with occasional Friday night visits to Afton (NY) Speedway aboard his own no. 8jr. TRC mount. "I’ve already booked rooms for Florida next February so we’ll get a good start on the 2006 season and see how things come together after that."

* Exciting fifth and final heat with Alan Johnson starting last after failing to make it out for time trials. He charged to the front in eight laps aboard the yellow no. 10 CRC Community Rental-Tri-State Roofing-Cedar Ridge RV/TEO entry, finishing second to only race winner Brett Hearn. "The car is fast and its been fun to drive," said Johnson, referring to the same car he captured the 100-lapper with at Hagerstown on June 23. He finished seventh at Albany-Saratoga and 10th at Rolling wheels steering the trusty ’04 TEO machine.

*The top-15 finishers in the Coors Light 100 at Albany-Saratoga Speedway on June 23 were at the head of the line at Albany-Saratoga to share in the unique $3,000 Winner’s Circle fund that has been set aside to be divided among the highest finishing drivers at each event. The distribution of this special $3,000 fund will be based on the feature race finishing order: drivers placing in positions 1-5 will each earn $100, 6th – 10th-place finishers will receive $200 and 11th – 15th will pocket $300. Competitors are required to attend and attempt to qualify for the next Advance Auto Parts SDS event to collect payment of the Winner’s Circle bonus. By racing at Rolling Wheels, Billy Decker, Gary Tomkins, Tim Fuller and Bobby Varin each received $100, Steve Paine, Alan Johnson, Tom Sears,Jr., Brett Hearn and Justin Haers received $200, with Danny Johnson, Vic Coffey, Pat Ward and Jack Johnson pocketed $300. Kenny Tremont and Mitch Gibbs were no shows. Upon attempting to qualify at the next event, Lebanon Valley (N.Y.) Speedway on July 7, Fuller, Jimmy Phelps, Tomkins, Decker and Hearn will collect $100 each, Ward, Chuck Bower, Chad Brachmann, Jack and Alan Johnson will receive $200, with Hears, Paine, teammates Sears and Sean Beardsley, and Stewart Friesen in line for $300 bonuses.

’05 Super Series Schedule Revision: Recent 2005 Advance Auto Parts SDS updates include the return of the ’Traffic Jam 100’ at Grandview Speedway’s high-banked one-third miler on Tues., July 19. Gates will open at 5 p.m. with race time set for 7:30 p.m. Advance tickets are on sale now for Adults ($20) and Children 6-11 ($5), while children under the age of 6 will be admitted for free. In addition, Wednesday, August 3 has been established as the make up date for the Advance Auto Parts Modified Super DIRT Series event at Lernerville Speedway that was postponed due to poor weather conditions on June 14. Finally, on the heels of these two changes, track officials cancelled the Series event scheduled for Tri-City (Pa.) Speedway on July 31 leaving nearby Lernerville Speedway on August 3rd to host the only series race in the region.

* With RACEceiver now recognized as the Official Driver Communicator of DIRT MotorSports™ in 2005, fans, as well as the competing drivers, were able to hear first hand everything that was happening throughout the entire Rolling Wheels show. A compact radio receiver that conveniently fits into a driver’s pocket, a RACEceiver allows each driver to hear directions from series officials, which greatly enhances the safety and timeliness of events. A similar version available to fans allows RACEceiver users to hear what information series officials are relaying to the drivers. For more information about RACEceiver, visit www.raceceiver.com, call 866/301-7223, or look for their sales trailers at various events.
