FULLER NIPS PHELPS FOR JULY 4 WIN AT WEEDSPORT

WEEDSPORT, NY...Tim Fuller, from Edwards, NY, made a pass on Jimmy Phelps with five laps to go to win the 35-lap last Sunday, July 4, at the Cayuga County Fair Speedway. Bob Henry Jr. won the 20-lap Sportsman main and in the street stocks Dan Hoffman Sr. claimed the feature win. All three winner earned enough points to take their respective points leads in their respective divisions. Bill Werner won the night cap 25-lap Enduro. The Patriot Sprint cars were on hand for a special appearance. Chuck Hebing took the 20-lap win.

Mike Ward took the lead at the drop of the green in the DIRT Modified main. He was able to pull out to a substantial lead over Vince Vitale and Jimmy Phelps. Phelps was able to take second on lap three and take off after Ward, who by then held a .9 second lead.

Behind the leaders Jack Johnson was able to pas Vitale and grab third. Phelps ran down Ward but waited until lap 11 to pass Ward going on the outside down the front chute. Back in fourth, Fuller took the spot and started to move in on Johnson. Fuller then made an astounding move to the outside exiting the second turn. This move propelled Fuller into second, passing both Ward and Johnson.

Fuller had is work cut out for him as Phelps held a .5 second lead in heavy lapped traffic. With just 15 laps remaining Johnson passed Ward for third. Alan Johnson followed suit, taking fourth. Gary Tomkins was glued to Alan's rear bumper and moved into fifth. Jack Johnson seemed to get crossed up in the second turn on lap 27, losing three spots.

On lap 29 Fuller took to the outside of the second turn to race side-by-side with Phelps. As the duo came down to complete lap 30, Fuller held a .034 second advantage and the lead. Fuller went to collect the $2,000 first place feature winner's money. Phelps held on for second followed by Alan Johnson, Tomkins and Pat Ward. The race ran green to checkers, averaging 72.618 mph for the 35-lap distance.

The 20-lap Sportsman feature saw Ryan Richardson drag Jeremy Pitcher for the lead only to see the yellow fly when a three car incident took place on the front stretch. Dan. Creeden spun exiting the fourth turn. Both Greg Doust and Eldon Payne Jr. ended up tagging the front stretch concrete. Doust needed to the towed to the pits, but Payne Jr. made repairs and quickly returned to the rear of the field for the restart.

Richardson maintained his lead with Mike Conrow in second. On lap four Conrow made his move and took the lead. Richardson was now in a side-by-side battle with Pitcher for second.

Up front Conrow stretched his advantage with Pitcher now in second followed by Bob Henry Jr., who seemed to be the fastest car on the track. The yellow flew on lap 13 when Rob Bellinger came to a stop in the third turn. This cost Conrow his lead and bunched the pack together.

On the restart Eric Richardson jumped and was penalized two spots at the end of the race. It seemed that Pitcher was going to be able to challenge Conrow. But it was Henry Jr. who made the move. On lap 16, Henry Jr. moved into second. Two laps later he found himself in a side-by-side duel with Conrow for the lead. Henry Jr. was scored as the leader with just two laps remaining in the race.

At the finish line it was Henry Jr. with his first win of the year at Cayuga County. Conrow recorded a fine second place finish. Pitcher, Jim Livingston and Eric Richardson rounded out the top five finishers.

The Street Stocks saw only seven cars answer the call to the start. Dan. Hoffman Sr. sailed into then lead on the second lap and never looked back. A yellow on lap seven, when Frank Burnell lost a right rear tire was Hoffman's only obstacle to overcome. This bunched the field together, costing Hoffman the huge lead he had built up over Dave Marcuccilli and Jim Cronin. With the white flag in the air, Marcuccilli lost a tire and dropped from second to finish six. Hoffman took the win followed by Ron Hawker, Steve Woodworth, Cronin and Eric Chapman.

A complete program of fireworks completed the Independence Day celebrations. This Sunday the schedule shows a non-point race for the sportsman cars. This, in fact is incorrect as the proposed Sportsman West Region Championship race was scrapped when

Gasport did not open for the year. Therefore a full program of DIRT Modified, Sportsman, Street Stocks and Enduros is scheduled. July 11, also marks the start of the televised Empire Series featuring live television coverage to many cable subscribers and taped delayed coverage on Speed TV. Race time on Sunday starts at 7 p.m. sharp. Gates open at 5 p.m..
