McCREADIE TOPS WEEDSPORT MOD RUN, HALLETT CLAIMS EMPIRE SPORTS NETWORK PR -STOCK WESTERN REGIONAL OPENER

WEEDSPORT, NY...Tim McCreadie returned to his roots, the DIRT Modifieds, from the World of Outlaws Late Model Series and promptly won the 35-lap main event last Sunday at the Cayuga County Fair Speedway. Bill Hallett, from Byron, NY, won the first round of the Western Region Empire Sports Network Super DIRT Series for Pro-Stocks. In Sportsman action it was Donnie Wetmore romping home with the 20-lap feature. Other feature winners included big Frank "Bubba" Burnell in the Street Stocks and Dan Hoffman Jr. won the 25-lap Enduro.

Todd Milton quickly out distanced Jeff Brownell Jr. and Justin Haers at the green flag in the DIRT Modified feature. But coming through the pack from his ninth place starting position was young McCreadie. He caught up with Milton as the two raced away from the rest of the field.

On lap 13, McCreadie made his move into the lead using lapped traffic to his advantage. Behind the lead pair a torrid battle was taking place between Haers and young Matt Sheppard for the third position. The first yellow came on lap 16 when Ray Bliss slowed going down the front stretch.

On the restart McCreadie blasted into the lead and pulled away, as Haers got by Milton for second. One lap later Alan Johnson passed Milton and started to make his presents in the top five known. On lap 19, Darryl Ruggles was tagged and sent skimming along the top of the Jersey Barrier cement wall and out of the race track. Amazingly he would return seven laps later and complete the race.

Haers tried to pressure McCreadie but found he could only hold his own with Johnson on his rear bumper. On lap 27, Haers suddenly slowed going down the backstretch allowing Johnson to make his move and take the position. The yellow flew to clear the Haers car from the track.

McCreadie held off Johnson over the closing laps to take the victory. Johnson came home in second followed by Sheppard, Pat Ward and Danny Johnson. McCreadie averaged 75.184 mph for the 35-lap distance.

"We haven't got this car exactly like we would like," commented McCreadie, "but we are working on it."

The 25-lap Western Region Empire Sports Network Super DIRT Series for Pro-Stocks found heat winners Bill Hallett and Frank Guererri Jr. bring the field of 20 cars down to take the green. Hallett immediately jumped into the lead and began to pull away. The only yellow of the race came on lap two for debris on the back stretch. By the halfway mark, Hallett held a five second lead over Guererri Jr. and showed no signs of slowing.

At the finish line it was Hallett with the victory followed by Guererri Jr., Beamer Guzzardi, Roger Chrysler and Jipp Ortiz rounding out the top five. The races averaged 65.575 mph.

Donnie Wetmore Jr. wanted to repeat the performance set by Hallett in the Pro-Stocks and lead every lap of the race. Wetmore took the lead at the drop of the green and was never seriously challenged all race. Jim LaRock ran second the first half of the race until Bob Henry Jr. passed him on the tenth lap for the spot.

Two yellows flew during the race. On lap nine Greg Doust made contact with the cement wall exiting the fourth turn and came to a stop along the concrete just under the starter's stand. The scariest accident came just two laps later, lap 11 when Tim Burns got up and over the first turn wall. His car performed a twisting and turning type of flip as he exited the speedway. He emerged uninjured but his car suffered damage and was done for the remainder of the race.

At the checkers it was Wetmore Jr. with victory by .6 seconds over Henry Jr.. Eldon Payne Jr. finished in third followed by Kevin bates and Mike Conrow.

Frank Burnell took the lead in the 15-lap Street Stock main and went on to take the victory. In victory lane he exited his car and then performed a dance on the roof of his car.

Mike Murphy, Dave Marcuccilli, Jamie Eldridge and Steve Woodworth rounded out the top five finishers in the Street Stock main.

This Sunday will be Quality Hardwoods, Fred Tanner Construction and Nucor Steel night at the track. The DIRT Sportsman will face the second round of the Western Region Sunoco Race Fuels Super DIRT Series. Adam Ferri, the sportsman winner just two weeks ago at Cayuga County, won the first round of this series in Merrittville back on May 24.

Also on hand this Sunday will be a complete program of DIRT Modified, Street Stock and Pit Stop Convenience Store Enduro racing. Race time is at 7 p.m. sharp.
