There's A Doctor in This House - Johnson dominates Grabs Second Win
BRIDGEPORT, NJ (August 27, 2005)- Nothing was going to stop Phelps, NY's Danny Johnson this past Saturday night - not a six hour drive, not missing hot laps while stuck in traffic and certainly not 24 other competitors looking to capture a feature win as US Foodservice presented "Hot Summer Nights" at the Bridgeport Speedway.
"The track was great. The crew did a great job, the car was right on the money," Johnson said of the J&J Shop/Planned Poultry Renovations #27 Teo Pro Car. "I love racing here, the people are great. It's a lot of fun."
The action was hot and heavy early in the 25 lap feature event, the battle to lead the opening stages was fierce. Tom Hager jumped into the early lead battling with Chic Cossaboone. With Cossaboone up high and Hager wheeling the around the bottom, Tommy Beamer wailed through the middle demanding the top spot. With Beamer settling into the top spot, Johnson rocketed through the field maneuvering from 17th to show 3rd by the fourth circuit. With Beamer maintaining a full straightaway lead at the half way mark, it looked as if the ultra-fast Beamer would pick up his first Modified feature victory. Disaster would strike Beamers just past the half way point; the right rear tire would explode sending the Milano's Pizza #31 Dirt Wheels mount straight into the turn four wall. The lead, now in Johnson's hands with defending Modified Champion, Duane Howard and "The Quaker Shaker" Rick Laubach right on the back bumper. The PA pilot's of Laubach and Howard would have nothing for Johnson and "The Doctor" would go on to pick up his second victory of the season. Howard and Laubach would cross second and third, with The Thornton's Gulf #5D of Stephen Durand capturing fourth and Fritz Epright with a strong run in fifth.
In the Sportsman fray - no surprise - Sewell, NJ's Richie Pratt, Jr. led the Lipinski Snow Service #28 Bicknell to three in a row and win number eight of the season. Pratt grabbed the lead from Bill Klingmeyer at the half way mark and set sail for the checkered. Klingmeyer would settle for second, with JD3Graphics Young Guns - Rob Pierce and Sean Carman in third and fourth, and Tom Miller rounding out the top five.
Steelmantown, NJ's Sprint sensation, Jim Wyers would come from shotgun on the field, to overtake Joe Thuet for the lead with five laps remaining in the Jasper Sprint event. Tim Iulg would come home in second, John Wyers in third, Frank Polimeda in fourth and Torrey Rose completing the top five.
Pat Conaway would overcome a five race winless drought to pick up his 12th victory of the season in the Outlaw Stock division. Conaway blasted past Gary Klimgczak at the halfway mark to overtake the lead with Dave Gould - in his first return to action - right on this bumper. Gould would settle for second, Klimgczak would come home third followed by Frank Ashman and Mike Panza.
