VANPELT, PEOPLES SR., GORDON, SHEA , AND DAVIS CELEBRATE A WIN AT THE WOODHULL RACEWAY!!
Brian Knowles captures the 2005 Morgan’s Auto Repair Street Stock Race Of Champions Title!
WOODULL, N.Y.--- A full night of racing got underway once again at The Woodhull Raceway as the track had to shut down for the past two weeks for inclement weather. With the threat of rain lurking in the shadows, track promoters Scott and Amy Drake along with track manager Terry Hill, decided to keep the show moving. Thumbs up to the entire staff and drivers as all heats and features made it in the record books. Klopps’s Transmissions of South Corning, and Stateline Camping of Lindley sponsored the evening’s activities and presented awards to the winners, as well as Team 88A Racing sponsoring a special 15 lap feature for the S&W; Awards and Photos Warriors.
Billy VanPelt won the 358 Modifieds 25 lap feature, but with starting in the seventeenth position, his job wasn’t easy. Larry Keegan had the point until lap three when caution flew at which Stacy Jackson powered to the front on the restart .Jackson was on a tear as he found the high groove to be in his liking as he held off Curt VanPelt for many laps. Mike Jackson, Billy Vanpelt, and Frank Dunning all making the move forward midway in the race. Steve Hartman Jr. manages to get around C. VanPelt but Stacy Jackson continues to defend the top spot. On lap 16, B. VanPelt joins the dogfight for the second position. S. Jackson loses the lead on lap 19 as B. VanPelt gets a good run under him. VanPelt takes first with Hartman Jr. second. Stacy Jackson hangs on to three as C. VanPelt and Frank Dunning rounds out the top five. Bobby Davis comes in the sixth spot with Larry Doolittle having a great run finishing seventh. Mike Jackson, climbing from 14th, finished eighth with Dale Welty and Vern Wasson close behind for ninth and tenth. Heat winners were Larry Keegan, Donnie Lawson, and Billy VanPelt.
The Napa Super Stocks 20 lap feature ran next with Ken Peoples Sr. taking the checked flag. Bob Lubberts brought the field to the line, but Mike Hilfiger quickly takes the lead. A three car breakaway at lap five finds Hilfiger defending the top spot against 6th place starter, Glenn Whritenour, and 8th starter, Peoples Sr. A few laps later, a spin in turns 3 and 4 brings out the caution for some back cars. The two leaders, Hilfiger and Peoples also spins in turn two, but as the caution had already been waved, they were able to get back the same positions. Tough luck for Hilfiger as something breaks in the front end of his car, thus ending his night of racing. After the restar, Peoples Sr. hammers the gas pedal and pulls away6 from the pack. Brett Marlatt, battling back from a very early spin, finds himself battling points leader Greg Galligan for fifth spot. With five laps left, Whritenour closes in on Peoples. Kyle Lefelhoc and Alan Crooker have been battling for several laps for the third spot. Peoples Sr, takes first as Whritenour crosses a real close second. Lefelhoc wins the battle for third over Crooker and Marlatt rounds out the top five. Sixth through tenth were, Galligan, Mick Seeley, Scott Brown, Greg Young, and Bob Lubberts. Heat winners were Alan Crooker and Greg Galligan
Morgan’s Auto Repair Street Stocks took to the track for their 20 lap event with points leader Dan Gordon guiding them to the green flag. Gordon took command right from the start with Dave Gee and Ron Divens battling for second. Ninth starter Mike Williams makes his way into the top five after 5 laps goes in the record books. With Gordon having a sizable lead, second place is the hot spot on the track with Divens and now Williams fighting for that position. As Gee slips back some, Cliff moss has also entered the top five halfway into this 20 lapper.Gordon’s lead starts to diminish with the laps winding down as Divens is closing in. Lap cars become a big factor for the lead cars as now Williams has caught up to Divens to challenge for second spot. With three laps to go, Williams holds the second position as a caution waves, bunching the leaders up once again on the restart, Gordon hangs on to the lead with Williams coming in second followed by Divens in third. Moss and Gee grab 4th and 5th .Third place starter Dave Davis comes in sixth ahead of 12th starter Brian Knowles. Rod Mullens, Jeff Smith and Jerry Buckley round out the top ten. Heat winners were Dan Gordon and Dave Gee.
20 laps was the distance for the Signs Plus of Kanona Mini Stocks with Brian Butler on the point. Four wide action early on as these mighty four bangers jockey for position. Two cautions fly early on as these drivers are anxious to get to the front. A lead change as Lynn Burrell takes the command. Bill Shea jumps into second position on lap five as Brian “Corky” Grant jumps up 5 spots. Grant has a rocket underneath him as he and Shea along with leader Burrell do battle. Halfway in points leader Ryan Davenpoint has cracked the top ten and is well on his way to the front. Burrell loses the lead to Shea and he and Grant just dominate the front spot and even pulls a half a speedway ahead of the rest. Dennis Erdmann ahs made a great stride to the front as he, starting in the sixteenth position, finds third with five laps to go. Also Art Goodier and Bob Thompkins , both recipients to an early spin, are back in the top ten as well. Grant just keeps being a thorn in Shea’s side but finishes second as Shea manages to hold him off for the win. Erdmann, Davenport and Goodier take 3rd through fifth. Finishing sixth through tenth were Lynn Burrell, Thompkins, Joe Dgien, Bill VanEtten and Todd Dickerson. Heat winners were Derek Mills, Bill Shea, and Corky Grant.
Tom and Ida Austin from Team 88A Racing sponsored the S&W; Awards and Photos Warriors feature with a special 15 lapper. These twelve to fifteen year olds have competed all year for points but not for any monetary payouts as they are listed as amateurs as so that they could still compete in school sports. Chris Young grabbed the top spot from Michelle Kurtz at the start of the 15 lapper with Casey Pavilik close behind. Hard contact on the front stretch with Kurtz, but she manages to continue. Bryce Davis takes over the top spot on lap 5 and breaks away from the rest of the field. Battling for second place is Pavilik and Brett Marlatt. The field pretty much stretches out as Shane Pickering and Tom Austin Jr. breaks into the top five. Finishing order was Davis, Pavilik, Marlatt, Pickering and Austin Jr. in the top five. Kurtz holds on to sixth as Young drops back to seventh place. Craig Crooker, who just turned 12 last week, raced for his first time this year and finished eighth. Dave Lubberts and Will Simpson rounded out the rest of the field. Tom and Ida Austin handed out beautiful plaques to all the racers at the finish
Eight drivers were eligible to compete in the annual Morgan’s Auto Repair Street Stock Of Champions event , but only seven made it to the line. Sixteen laps was the distance as Brian Knowles leads them to the line. Trouble on lap 6 as a spin occurs in turn 1. Ron Divens was sent to the pits apparently for rough driving. Cliff Moss and Knowles had a break away prior to the caution, but after the restart, they find Dan Gordon on their heals nearing the halfway mark. Dave Gee and Tony Foth stay pretty much in line holding on fourth and fifth. Gordon tries to get a good run on Knowles but has to settle for second spot at the finish. Moss takes third while Gee and Foth round out the top five. The rest of the finishing order was Mike Williams and Divens. Nate Dunning, who was the last eligible driver, was not in attendance. $1200.00 was divided amongst the top five with a very impressive and massive trophy going to the winner, Knowles.
