2ND WIN OF THE SEASON FOR ROBBIE GREEN

Afton, NY…7/24/98.. Mirabito Fuel Group presented a full night of NASCAR Winston

Racing Series action on Friday July 24th. Robbie Green, Jim Crawn, Skip

French, Bill Cook and Harold Humphrey all collected wins on the evening.

Twenty-three modifieds came to life as Jerry Cook, Director of Competition

for NASCAR gave the command of Gentleman Start Your Engines in front of a

packed grandstand. Mark Schoonover and Steve Eldred brought the field to the

start of the 30-lap event. Eldred would jump right up to the top spot

bringing with him John Kollar, Marty Bunker and Mark Schoonover.

Eldred would stay up front until lap seven as John Kollar who had been

pressuring for the position would take the lead away as the field went to turn

one. Paul Jensen would follow Kollar through and take second shuffling Eldred

back to third. On the move was Robbie Green who started in position number

thirteen.

Green was now in third and closing in on Jensen for the second spot. Kollar

was

feeling the pressure from Jensen and on lap thirteen Jensen took the top spot

away. Green was able to get by Kollar, as did Mitch Gibbs shuffling him back

in the lineup. At the midway point Jensen leads with Robbie Green, Mitch

Gibbs, Steve Eldred and Tony Pepicelli rounding out the top five.

Green was now working on Jensen for the lead and was able to pull along side

as they went to turn two. Green used his momentum down low and took the lead

to complete lap sixteen. Green would pull away by five car lengths once in

front. Jensen was now feeling the heat from Mitch Gibbs. Gibbs using the

high side to his liking was challenging for the second spot. As the field,

completed lap twenty, Gibbs took second from Jensen.

Caution appeared on lap twenty-one as Earl Walrath, Mike Jones, John Ritter

and Mike Baldwin came together in turn one. This put Gibbs on the back bumper

of the race leader Robbie Green. On the restart Green remained in front with

Gibbs following in his tire tracks. A battle for third was now brewing as

Paul Jensen has the spot and Tony Pepicelli was looking to get by.

Gibbs kept using the high side to his liking and was now inching closer to

the leader Green. On lap twenty-six, Gibbs pulled even with Green but could

not make the pass stick. Behind them, Jensen was in a race for third as

Pepicelli was looking to the inside for the spot. Pepicelli made a run out of

turn two and was able to grab the third position. Caution appeared on lap

twenty-eight, for a spin in turn two setting up a two-lap dash.

Green was able to keep Gibbs behind him with two to go, but Gibbs went to the

high side one more time. With one to go, Gibbs pulled even with Green out of

turn two as they raced to turn three. Green was able to shut the door on

Gibbs as they went through three and four to maintain the lead. At the

checkers Robbie Green collected win number two on the season. Gibbs was

second, Tony Pepicelli, Brian Weaver and Paul Jensen completed the top five.

Heat wins went to Marty Bunker, John Kollar and Robbie Green.

In the 20-lap NASCAR Winston Racing Shortrack Series Sportman division

feature event, Alan Johnson took the lead at the drop of the green. Tim Mayne

who started in position number two took control on lap five. Mayne who is

looking for his first career win in a sportsman put eight car lengths between

him and the rest of the pack.

Jim Crawn was slowly working his way to the front and on lap twelve took the

second spot away and was starting to reel in Tim Mayne. Mayne had a six-car

length advantage as they completed lap sixteen. Crawn was doing all he could

do but could not gain any ground on Mayne. Caution came out on lap eighteen

putting Crawn on the back bumper of Mayne. On the restart, Crawn got a good

jump and took the lead going to turn one. Mayne came right back, but Crawn

was able to keep the top spot.
