ROBBIE GREEN COLLECTS 3RD WIN IN THE MODS: TRACK CHAMPIONS CROWNED
Afton, NY…9/4/98- J & J Yamaha of Sherburne, NY presented a full night of racing on
Friday September 4th. Feature winners on the night were Robbie Green, Arnie
Slade, Skip French, Bill Cook, Harold Humphrey and Gordy Isham. Motorcycle
Daredevil Sky Lungston entertained the fans jumping over ten 4 Cylinder
Stocks.
The final point's race for the NASCAR Winston Racing Series Modifieds was run
on the evening. Coming into the night Paul Jensen held a 67-point lead over
Brian Weaver. Robbie Green and Mark Gray paced the field to the start of the
30-lap feature event. Green took off at the start opening up a quick five-car
advantage over Mark Gray, Mark Schoonover and Rich Tiffany.
Green who came into the night seeking his third win of the season and looking
for a little racing luck at Afton was pulling away as by lap six he had opened
up a full straight away lead over Gray. Mark Schoonover was challenging for
second when Gray slowed and pulled pit side giving second to Schoonover.
Charging through the pack was Tony Pepicelli. Starting thirteenth, Pepicelli
was now up to the fourth position by lap eleven.
Caution slowed the pace Robbie Green was setting on lap eleven as Rick Amo,
Earl Walrath and JR Hurlburt came together in turn one. Green would flex his
muscle one more time on the restart, as he would pull away again from
Schoonover by ten car lengths by lap fifteen. At the midway point, Green
leads with Schoonover second; Tony Pepicelli took third away from Rich Tiffany
moving him back to fourth and Brian Weaver completing the top five.
With Green pulling away, Pepicelli was closing in on Schoonover for second.
Behind the leaders, Brian Weaver and Paul Jensen were running fifth and sixth
were now challenging the fourth place car of Rich Tiffany. On lap twenty both
Weaver and Jensen passed Tiffany for fourth and fifth. This was now the race
on the speedway as Jensen was challenging Weaver for fourth. Jensen took the
spot away on lap twenty-three.
Robbie Green was on cruise control and was no where in sight as Schoonover
still in second held a five-car advantage over Pepicelli in third. Paul
Jensen and Brian Weaver took turns swapping the fourth and fifth positions
back and fourth until Weaver grabbed the spot for good on lap twenty-eight.
As the checkers waved, Robbie Green collected his third win on the season
with a dominating run beating the field by over a full straight away. Mark
Schoonover was second, Tony Pepicelli, Brian Weaver and Paul Jensen completed
the top five. Heat wins on the night went to Robbie Green, Rich Tiffany and
Rick Amo.
With his fifth place finish Paul Jensen was crowned the 1998 Afton Raceway
Modified Track Champion. Last season Jensen shared the title with Robbie
Green, giving him back to back titles.
Bill Walters and Jim Crawn were separated by one point going into the final
Sportsman points race of the year. Twenty laps would determine who would be
the track champion. Arnie Slade jumped out to the lead from his pole starting
spot and the chase was on. Going into turn one on lap two, Tim Ross and Bill
Walters made heavy contact racing for position.
This mishap ended the night for Walters, taking him out of the hunt for the
track title and assuring Jim Crawn the championship. On the restart, Slade
was able to pull ahead once again opening up six car lengths on the field.
This is as close as anyone would get to Arnie Slade as he would go on to lead
every lap and score his first career Sportsman win.
Steve Anderson crossed the finish line second; Aaron Excell, Jim Crawn and
Tim French rounded out the top five. Heat wins on the night went to Tony Ross
and Arnie Slade. With his fourth place finish, Jim Crawn is the 1998
Sportsman Track Champion.
Coming into the night, Butch Klinger held a three-point lead over Skip
French in the Street Stock ranks. In the feature event, French took the lead
on lap eight and held off a determined Denny Smith to pick up his fourth win
of the season. Smith crossed the line second followed by John Walker, Bill
Harris and Butch Klinger. Heat wins went to John Walker and Bill Harris.
With the win and a fifth place finish by Butch Klinger, Skip French became the
Street Stock Track Champion.
Harold Humphrey took the lead on lap four of the 15-lap 4 Cylinder Stock
feature and went on to win his fourth of the season. Dave Jaindl crossed in
second followed by Jeff Burnett, Gene Brainard and Dennis Vroman. With the
win Humphrey captured the points title, his first in the 4 Cylinder Stock
ranks.
Bill Cook collected the win in the 15-lap Pure Stock feature event. The
win for Cook also gave him his second consecutive Track Championship. Jim
Howard was second, Dave Rogers, Jay Bradley and Dan Howe completed the top
five. Heat wins went to Scott Brown and Denny Decker. Gordy Isham collected
the win in the Dwarf car feature. This was the first appearance for the
Dwarfs at the Afton Raceway.
