DEFENDING MODIFIED CHAMPION ALAN JOHNSON RETURNS TO VICTORY LANE

BREWERTON, NY…It took Alan Johnson, the defending Brewerton Speedway DIRT Modified Track Champion, only two races to return to the winner’s circle this season at the D-shaped DIRT Demon. Johnson recorded the victory last Friday night in the 2004 Motorsports Expo/Gater Racing News main event. Johnson earned $1,700 for the win in the Elaine James Motorsports owned car.

Matt Sheppard raced out to the early lead at the start of the 2004 Motorsports Expo/Gater Racing News DIRT Modified feature from the outside pole starting position. Sheppard set a fast pace from the beginning in only his second ever start at the D-shaped DIRT Demon in a Big Block Modified. Sheppard led the opening nine circuits before Billy Decker took command of the field on lap 10. Decker wasted little time in moving up from the 12th starting position.

At the halfway point of the main event Decker continued to lead with Johnson just moving into the second position ahead of Sheppard. Chuck Hebing, Pat Ward, Steve Hulsizer, Frankie Caprara, Tim McCreadie, Chuck Bower and Tom Sears raced in positions fourth through tenth respectively at the halfway stage. The two drivers on the move at this time were Johnson and Hebing. Johnson started 16th and Hebing 20th, but both drivers came charging to the front.

It appeared that Decker had the field covered on this night, but Johnson made his patented late race move. Johnson took the top spot away from Decker on lap 29. The final laps were still close, but Johnson wasn’t about to give the lead away. Decker had to settle for second with Tim McCreadie, Ward and Caprara completing the top five feature finishers in the virtual all-star field.

Sean Lias claimed the win in the 20-lap rain delayed IMCA Modified feature. George Valenti, Bill Anderson, Richard Townsend and Bill Anderson Jr. completed the top five feature finishers behind Lias. Townsend led the first three laps of the main event before Lias took command on lap four.

Lias also crossed the finish line first at the conclusion of the nightcap IMCA Modified feature race. Billy Dunn, Bill Anderson, George Valenti and Larry Robbins completed the top five feature finishers behind Lias. Bill Anderson led the first five laps of the event before Lias took command on lap six.

Dan Williams recorded the victory in the 20-lap Dwarf Car feature race. Tim Burdick, Mark Cooper, Joe Garafolo and Jeff Barker completed the top five feature finishers behind Williams. Williams took the lead away from Wayne Younglove on lap 12 and led the rest of the distance.

Defending Four Cylinder Stock Track Champion Roger West won the rain delayed Four Cylinder Stock feature race. Jeff Herbert, Lloyd Hinton, Darik Van Epps and Bruce Ackley followed west across the finish line. Hinton led the first circuit of the race before West took charge.

Chuck Powelczyk won the nightcap Four Cylinder Stock feature. Jeff Herbert, Darik Van Epps, Doug Farnsworth and John West followed Powelczyk in the top five. Powelczyk led the entire 12-lap distance.

Jay McGillicuddy claimed the win in the wild 30-car Four Cylinder Enduro. Mitch Pietrowicz, Chuck Dyer, Ron Hunt and David Hunt completed the top five feature finishers.

Racing will continue this Friday at Brewerton Speedway on Promotion Speed Supply/Matt McGill Collision Night. The DIRT Modifieds, IMCA Modifieds, Dwarf Cars and Four Cylinder Stocks will all be in competition plus One on One Spectator Races. Action will start at 7:30 p.m. For more information please call 315-668-6906 or 668-RACE. On line information is available at www.brewertonspeedway.com.
