DECKER WINS BATTLE AT BREWERTON AND CLAIMS FEATURE WIN ON PROMOTION MOTORSPORTS/MATT MC GILL COLLISION NIGHT
BREWERTON, NY…Billy Decker recorded a thrilling victory last Friday at Brewerton Speedway on Promotion Motorsports/Matt McGill Collision Night. Decker made a spectacular move in splitting Chuck Bower and Alan Johnson to take the top spot on lap 29. The driver of the Mirabito Fuel Group DIRT Modified led the rest of the distance of the 35-lap event to earn the $1,700 payday. Decker’s last victory at the D-shaped DIRT Demon came exactly one year ago.
Ryan Phelps raced out to the early lead at the start of the Promotion Speed Supply/Matt McGill Collision DIRT Modified main event from the pole starting position. The second generation DIRT Modified rookie set a fast pace from the start and after five circuits he was being followed in the top five by Vince Vitale, Scott Prentice, Chuck Hebing and Pat Ward. A few minor caution periods slowed the action at times.
On every restart Phelps was able to hold on to the top spot. Phelps would lead the opening 16 laps of the feature in only his second ever Big Block Modified start at the D-shaped DIRT Demon. Prentice took the lead away from Phelps on lap 17 after numerous attempts to do so. At the halfway mark Prentice continued to lead and was being followed in the top five by Alan Johnson, Chuck Bower, Decker and Phelps.
Bower made a power move around Prentice on lap 24 to take command of the field. The race was far from over at this time and what developed was a tremendous show by Bower, Decker and Johnson. Bower continued to hold off both Johnson and Decker in search of his first victory of the season. It was on lap 29 when Decker split both Bower and Johnson to take the lead.
The race was in doubt until the end with Decker claiming the victory in the Ross Motorsports entry. Johnson worked up to second at the finish with Bower settling for third. Tim McCreadie and Pat Ward completed the top five feature finishers. Prentice, Tim Fuller, Frankie Caprara, Craig Terrell and Ryan Phelps finished in positions sixth through tenth respectively.
Sean Lias won his third straight IMCA Modified feature race last Friday night. Billy Dunn, George Valenti, Bill Anderson Jr. and Les Hubbard completed the top five feature finishers behind Lias. Rich Keller led the opening four laps of the feature race. Lias took command of the field on lap five and led the rest of the 20-lap affair.
Tim Burdick claimed his second Dwarf Car feature race win of the 2003 season last Friday night. Steve Miller, Dan Williams, Kreig Heroth and Matt Magner followed Burdick across the finish line. John Behron led the opening eight laps of the main event. Steve Miller was the event leader laps nine through 14. Burdick gained the lead on lap 15 and led the rest of the way in the 20-lap affair.
Chuck Powelczyk won his second straight Four Cylinder Stock feature event last Friday night. Lorrie Herbert, Rick Angle, John West and Darik Van Epps followed Powelczyk across the finish line. Herbert led the first three circuits of the feature race before Powelczyk took command of the field on lap four.
Sam Curcie was the winner of the One On One Spectator Race shootout.
