PRENTICE EDGES JOHNSON IN PHOTO FINISH FOR DIRT BIG BLOCK MODIFIED FEATURE WIN

BREWERTON, NY…Scott Prentice beat Alan Johnson in a photo finish for the DIRT Big Block Modified feature win at Brewerton Speedway last Friday on Dixon Performance/Art’s Radiator/Leaf Racewear Night. The win for the local driver in the Benwood Auto Parts DIRT Modified was worth $1,700. It was the fourth career win at the D-shaped DIRT Demon for Prentice, with his last win coming in 1997.

Jason Barney raced out to the early lead at the start of the DIRT Modified feature from the outside pole starting position. Barney only led the opening circuit. Prentice took the top spot away from Barney on lap two. Prentice started in the fourth position and wasted no time in moving to the front. Action was at a fast pace on the tacky track.

A multi-car accident slowed action on lap five. Just some of the drivers involved in the crash included Chuck Bower, Steve Hulsizer, Billy Decker, Bob McCreadie and Tom Sears. All drivers were uninjured in the show stopping crash. Prentice picked up his momentum when the race resumed and he quickly looked to build up his lead. Several top drivers were looking to run down Prentice.

At the halfway point of the 35 lap main event Prentice was being followed in the top five by Jimmy Phelps, Frankie Caprara, Tim Fuller and Tim McCreadie. Alan Johnson, Billy Decker, Pat Ward, Bob McCreadie and Ryan Baye raced in positions sixth through tenth at the halfway stage. The last half of the race was a virtual six-car battle for the feature win.

With five laps to go Prentice, Phelps, Caprara, Johnson, Tim McCreadie, Fuller and Decker were all in contention for the feature win. With one lap to go Phelps slowed going into the first turn that brought out the caution period. A one-lap dash for the feature win was now set. Johnson almost pulled off the win as he dove under Prentice going into the third turn. The duo then raced side by side to the finish line with Prentice coming out on top.

Johnson had to settle for second. Young Frankie Caprara recorded his best ever Brewerton Speedway finish in third. Tim McCreadie and Decker completed the top five feature finishers. Fuller, Bob McCreadie, Ward, Barney and Phelps crossed the finish line in positions sixth through tenth respectively.

Rob Keller won his first IMCA Modified feature of the season last Friday night. Keller claimed the popular win over Sean Lias, Billy Dunn, Mike Chilson and John Conway. Keller led the entire 20-lap distance for the victory.

Tod Simons won his second Dwarf Car feature race of the season last Friday night. Simons was followed across the finish line by Darren Forbes, Ken Gamlen, Scott Nash and Mark Cooper. Kreig Heroth led the opening lap of the main event. Simons took command on lap two and went on to the win in the 20-lap race.

Harvey Calkins Jr. claimed his second Four Cylinder Stock feature win of the year last Friday night. John West, Roger West Sr., Chris Torbitt and Jeremy Bargabos followed Calkins across the finish line. Russ Cusson led the first six feature laps before Torbitt took over on lap seven. Calkins took the lead away from Torbitt on lap nine and led the rest of the way in the 15-lap affair.

Ron Hunt was the winner of the Four Cylinder Enduro feature over Robert Ramsey, Sam Curcie, Bill Carista and Terry Scheier.

Action will continue at Brewerton Speedway this Friday night with the Empire Super Sprints invading the D-shaped DIRT Demon for the first time since 1993. The DIRT Big Block Modifieds, Dwarf Cars and Four Cylinder Stocks will also be in competition. Race time is 7:30 p.m. For more information please contact the track office at (315) 668-6906 or visit the web site at www.brewertonspeedway.com.
