Smith Stays Smooth Captures Bridgeport Win

BRIDGEPORT, NJ (July 30, 2005)- GR Smith of Folsom, NJ proved that the younger guys can get it done Friday Night at the Bridgeport Speedway, as he held off All-Time Modified Feature Winner Jimmy Horton, to pick up his second win this season.

"The Thrill" Jesse Hill set the pace in the early stages of the twenty-five lap feature pulling away from the 24 car Modified field. An altercation involving Hill and the Turn 2 infield barrier left the 99H worse for wear and he retired the machine. A lap 6 restart saw Horton grab the Advantage in the Grosso Trucking/Metal Fab Pro Race Shop #42. It seemed to be all Horton heading for his first checkered flag of the season pulling, at times, half a straightaway from second place runner GR Smith. A lap 12 restart gave Smith the opportunity to pounce as he wailed past Horton entering in turn 1. The two shuffled and diced exchanging spots, with Smith in the middle and Horton rim-riding the high side, weaving in and out of lapped traffic. Horton had his shot with two laps to go. A lapped car on the bottom of 3 left Smith riding up high, Horton dove to the middle to split the two only to have Smith shut the door and go on to pick up his second victory of the season in the Joel's Auto Repair #19. Horton settled for second, David Van Horn Jr. rode home third in his second Friday Night appearance followed by Richie Pratt Jr., and Kenny Meisner making a return after engine-woes two weeks prior.

"The Outlaw" Eric Kormann proved once again that he is "The Master Crater," in a GM Crate Sportsman feature filled with metal and mayhem. Kormann, who grabbed the lead at the lap 7 mark from then leader John Micek, picked up his sixth victory in the division. Six of the seventeen entered cars finished the caution plagued event. Rookie Jon Haegele in the Triple S Electric #61 came home an impressive second, with Lee Nardelli coming home third, Mike Fattori coming home fourth in the Hooked on the Outdoors #5F and Chuck Hopkins rounding out the top five.

Jack Conover picked up his second victory of the season in the 600cc Micro Sprint Division. Conover edged out Stewart Carmichael by 7/10th of a second. Rick Stief came home third, Sam Casella was fourth and Phil Meisner Jr. finished up fifth.

It was Ladies Night in the 270cc Micro Sprint division as Jessica Lindmeier dominated the 20 lap feature event in her BK Sheetmetal #84J. John Blanda crossed the line in second, with Point Leader Jim Wyers, Frank Venezia and Jeff Hartman rounding out the top five.

It was another photo finish in the 4 Cylinder Stock Class as Dave Bentley, Sr. picked up the win. Warren Stradley came home in second with Jeff Walls in third, Jim Hughes in fourth and Dave Damiano rounding out the top five.
