Smith Outsmarts to Capture Friday Night Victory

BRIDGEPORT, NJ (June 24, 2005)- GR Smith of Folsom, NJ grabbed his first Small Block Modified feature event this past Friday Night as Carquest Auto Parts presented an intense five division show at the DIRT 5/8 mile oval.

"I can't thank Joel [Boinskie] enough," Smith stated of the owner of the #19 Dirt Wheels Modified. "He has given me great equipment and we've been strong here. It's good to get a win."

Smith made his presence known early in the 25 lap feature event blasting past Jesse Hill and Tommy Beamer to chase down, early leader, Wade Hendrickson. With Hendrickson running solidly in the middle of the speedway and Smith hugging the bottom the two diced back and forth with Smith searching for that edge to grab the lead. The action was hot-and-heavy behind them as Jimmy Horton muscled his way into the third position as the leaders weaved in and out of lapped traffic. With a lapped car in the lane of "The Flying Farmer", Smith ran his line underneath the two of them. Then it got WILD. As the car of Becca Anderson slowed on the backstretch, against the wall on the high side, as the leaders careened out of turn two, Hendrickson had no place to go and nailed the former Sprint Car ace right in the rear bumper sidelining both machines. Meanwhile, fifth place runner "Young Gun" Jesse Hill slowed on the backstretch sidelining his 99H machine with mechanical problems. This set-up a four lap shootout between on-going rivals GR Smith and Jimmy Horton with Horton in second on the high side. Smith muscled away and was all by his lonesome at the checkered. Horton settled for second, Beamer finished in third, Sportsman driver John Stangle finished fourth and Howard O'Neal came home fifth.

Vineland, NJ's Eric Kormann picked up his fifth victory in the GM Crate Sportsman feature event. Kormann muscled past Don Bogey on lap 13 with Mike Fattori right on his tail. Kormann dominated and continued his winning streak with Mike Fattori finishing second, Don Bogey in third, Todd Kuhl in fourth and Rookie Chuck Buchman coming home fifth.

George Ulmer picked up his first victory of the season in the 600cc Micro Sprint Division. Ulmer outlasted a hard charge from Rick Stief after a yellow flag set up a two lap shootout for the victory. Stief settled for second, with Glenn Heverin, Phil Meisner Jr. and Sam Casella rounding out the top five.

Jeff Hartman grabbed the win in the 270cc Micro Sprint division. Hartman was followed to the line by Jimmy Cammock, Eddie Wagner, Steve Gasapari and Frank Venezia.

It was a "Hughes battle" in the 4 Cylinder Stock division with Jim Hughes picking up the victory over Mike Hughes. Warren Stradley came home third, Jeff Walls finished fourth and Dave Bentley Sr. finished fifth.
