ILES SHOWS STYLE IN SEASON OPENER

BRIDGEPORT, NJ (April 9, 2005) – In a heated battle that saw misfortune sidelining two of the early leaders, Medford, NJ’s Mike Iles went the extra distance--pocketing a cool $3,000 and collecting his second ever Big Block Feature event in the Planned Poultry Renovations 30 Lapper.

“We beat them once… I know we can beat them again, but now I have to beat my wife to the mailbox this week!” an exultant Iles joked about receiving his earnings. “This Larkin motor ran great, the car was absolutely flawless, and all my guys did a great job tonight.”

From the pole position Jim Stong took the lead, with Don Barone and Wade Hendrickson following close behind. Doug Hoffman made his presence known in the J&J Shop #27 as he moved into 3rd on lap 3 and overtook Barone for the lead just 3 laps later. A lap 13 restart saw Hoffman’s night come to an end as he spun his car to the inside of the track, causing a huge melee and handing the lead back over to Don Barone. Barone, Iles, and Hendrickson ran side-by-side lap after lap with Hendrickson gaining the advantage on lap 19 only to have mechanical problems 3 laps later, sending him sailing into the outside guardrail. Iles’ Active Environmental Technologies #711 gained control of the 30 lap feature event and held off a hard-charging Duane Howard to take the first Modified Feature of the 2005 season. Steve Botcher finished a strong third, followed by Rick Laubach and Jimmy Chester rounding out the top 5.

In the Sportsman fray, Delaware’s Kevin Collins prevailed in a caution-filled event after a hard charge from Sam Wescott, Jr. late in the race. Completing the rest of the top 5 at the line were John Pursell, Jimmy Horton IV, and Tom Miller.

Tracy Rocap lead flag-to-flag after a fierce battle with Chad James to win the GM Rookie Crate Sportsman feature event. James rebounded from a flat tire to finish second at the line but suffered misfortune at the scales, handing second place to Mike Hires, with Pat Hires, Danny Dorf, and Forest Rogers completing the top five.

In the Outlaw stocks Dave Wilhem took the victory over Pat Conaway, Pat Hires, Joe Trumbetti, and Bucky Albright.

15 Quarter Midget Drivers from various speedways participated in the “Salute to Quarter Midget Racing,” they displayed their cars behind the grandstands with the 358 DIRT Modified of Jesse Hill and Jasper Sprint driver Dave Brown.

Next week is Pepsi Race Weekend. Action kicks off this Friday, April 15th with a full five-division show including the DIRT 358 Modifieds, GM Sportsman, 270cc Micro-Sprints, 600cc Micro-Sprints and the 4 Cylinder Stock Cars. The Bridgeport Speedway/JD3Graphics Young Guns will be in attendance with their cars on display behind the grandstands. Gates open at 5:00 p.m. with Micro Sprint qualifying beginning at 7:00 p.m.

On Saturday, April 16th, the Big Block Modifieds return with a 25 lap event. The Sportman, Outlaw Stocks and the GM Rookie Sportsman classes will also be competing with full qualifying races and exciting feature events. Admission is $15 for adults, $10 for students and $5 for kids, and, as always, 4 and under are free. The grandstands open at 3:00 p.m. and the first green flag waves at 5:00 p.m.
