THE THIRD TIME IS A CHARM FOR RICKY “THE ROCKET” ELLIOTT WITH ANOTHER FEATURE WIN THIS SEASON.
Seaford Delaware’s Ricky “The Rocket” Elliott made it three in a row at Bridgeport Speedway this past Saturday night, June 19th, 2004. He recorded his 5th victory of the season and his 29th career when he took the top spot from Brian Truppi off of the restart on lap 9 of 25.
Tom Hager had the pole, holding on to the position for 2 laps when Bob Sarkisian rolled past him running on the inside of turn 3. Meanwhile, Kyle Strickler battled Tom Hager for 3rd, as Brian Truppi sat back planning his attack for the lead. Truppi took the lead from Sarkisian off the restart on lap 7. Truppi set the pace for only 2 more laps as eventual winner Ricky Elliott took over on lap 9. Elliott never looked back as he maintained a half of a straightaway lead over the rest of the pack. Following Elliott in
the top five positions were: Rich Laubach in 2nd, Jimmy Chester for 3rd, Duane Howard in 4th, and Kyle Strickler in 5th. 4 out of the top 5 finishers are also in the top ten in point standings for the Big Block Modified Division, sponsored by Boeing International.
DAN COGDILL TAKES HOME THE TROPHY IN SUNOCO SPORTSMAN SERIES AT BRIDGEPORT SPEEDWAY
Dan Cogdill from Pedricktown NJ earns win number 6 in Sunoco Sportsman Series at Bridgeport Speedway on June 19th , 2004. He led every lap but the first, taking the lead from polesitter Sean Carman. Carman had a strong car all night, but seemed to have nothing left for Dan Cogdill. After weeks of bad luck, Cogdill finally struck gold in the Sportsman 20-lap feature.
An early caution set up Cogdill’s dominance when he grabbed the lead from Carman after a restart on the first lap. Behind Cogdill and Carman’s battle, waged an all out war
for the third spot that included Tom Miller, Christopher Christ and Sam Wescott. Rich Stinson, the series point leader charged through the field showing in the top five by the 5th lap It was only a matter of time before Richie “Last Lap” Pratt Jr hammered into the front of the pack, appearing in the top five on Lap 11. He stole two positions on lap 12, out racing Stinson and John Purcell who had worked each other over for 10 laps. Pratt closed in on Cogdill with 5 laps remaining but would settle for second as the checkered flag waved. The top five finishers were: Dan Cogdill, Richie Pratt Jr, Sean Carman, John Purcell, and Rich Stinson.
ROOKIE JIM BEWLEY SCORES VICTORY IN ONLY HIS FIFTH SPRINT FEATURE
Bridgeport hosted the first victory for Jim Bewley in the Jasper Sprint Series on Saturday June 19th. He started on the pole and never gave any other competitor a chance throughout the 20 lap event.
Bewley raced more like a veteran than a rookie at Jersey’s fastest track this Saturday.
While he worked the entire track to hold on to the lead, there was plenty of spot-swapping going on for the top 5 positions. Matt Beasley, Steve Fleetwood, and Jeff Davis
raced three wide on lap 2 later inviting Jon Brennfleck into the party on the next lap, making it a 4 car battle for the fifth position. Mike Piersig and Shane Smith lined up neck and neck for several laps, making good use of the 5/8th clay oval. Rounding out the top five had Joe Thuet in 2nd, Matt Beasley in 3rd, Shane Smith in 4th and Jon Brennfleck in 5th.
