Modified Rookie Dingwall scores first 358 win at Brockville

BROCKVILLE-Kyle Dingwall showed he had some real ability when he drove his DIRT Sportsman car to the track title at Brockville Ontario Speedway in 2004. He proved that ability Friday night as he led all 30 laps in capturing his first DIRT 358 Modified feature win in just his fifth start at the fast quarter mile oval. Dingwall becomes the fourth different Modified winner of the year at Brockville.

The son of fan favourite Chico Dingwall started on the outside of the front row and rumbled into the lead on the first lap. However, it was no picnic the rest of the way. Pat and Danny O Brien quickly did some rumbling of their own moving from the back of the field into contention before the halfway mark. Pat took over the second spot on lap 16 and then tried to apply the heat to the rookie. Dingwall despite a couple more restarts would not be denied as he simply put his Bicknell chassis number 66 into comfortable leads and held off Pat O Brien for the victory. Danny O Brien's hopes vanished while riding third when he slid off the track in corner 4 with 2 laps to go.

When asked about what he was thinking coming through the final turn on the last lap, Kyle Dingwall answered in true rookie style, "All I can remember is how bad I was shaking." Dingwall hadn't even realized the driver he had beaten to the line was Pat O Brien preferring to pretend it was his brother Cole he was racing for the win.
John Lazore was a strong third in the 17 car field in front of Bryan Rogers and Chris Jones.

The 20 lap Sportsman feature had some youth in the running as well. Brad Kirkland led the bulk of the race only to just barely get off the cushion coming off turn 2 with four laps to go. That opened the door for Marcel Pecore to whiz by and take his fourth feature win of 2005. Kirkland almost got back around on a restart with two to go but settled for second followed by another freshman in teenager Jeremy Lasalle. Ryan Poole and Jason Riddell rounded out the top 5.

Adam Turner became the fifth different winner in the Street Stock division. Turner used patience to his advantage running second most of the race, taking the lead from Pete Stapper with four laps to go and then motoring away for the win. Stapper ended up second followed by Jason Powers, Jeff Brown and Jeff Welsh. Rookie honours went to Steve Smith who used a lapped car as a pick going down the back chute on the next to final lap to take the lead and then held off Matthieu Aubin in the scramble to the finish. Jesse Perrin, Adam Trickey and Chris Bakker were third through fifth respectively. The race was red flagged for a spectator wreck and flip on the back straight that demolished one car but no one was injured.

Brockville Ontario Speedway returns to action on Sunday afternoon, June 12th at 1pm with a special Mid Summer Enduro. Regular racing resumes next Friday night with a full race program with all four divisions in action plus an appearance from the always popular Midstate Vintage Stock Car Club. The green flag drops June 17th at 7:30 pm.
