Heartbreak for O Brien means victory for Poirier
Brockville-Danny O Brien had the field covered on Friday. The Kingston driver was about to become the second small block pilot to drive into victory lane this season at Brockville Ontario Speedway. He had a full straightaway lead with four laps to go when it all came unravelled and when all was said and done Quebec's Steve Poirier had captured his second feature win of 2004.
O Brien charged through the field early in the 30 lap Modified battle and steadily built a good lead over the field. Then a car spun in turn 2 with 4 laps to go leaving Poirier just a car behind the leader for the restart. It didn't matter as O Brien's right front tire went flat just as he entered turn 1 giving Poirier the lead. He managed to hold off a determined last lap challenge from Steve Paine for the win. Kyle Jacobs in a small block was third followed by Pat O Brien and Todd Stewart who was an impressive fifth in his first appearance of the season. Danny O Brien recovered to record a 7th place finish.
Tim Alton scored his first win at Brockville taking the 20 lap Sportsman feature. Alton started up front and led all 20 circuits and made it clear to everyone that he had the best car on this night. Tim VanBrocklin held on for second in front of a hard charging Cole Dingwall, who was followed by brother Kyle and Kees Van Winden.
North Augusta's Davey Wilgosh went back to back with his second straight Street Stock win. Wilgosh took over the top spot with 5 laps remaining when the first and second place cars of Robin Perrin and Jim Peters came together in turn 2. Perrin was done for the night with front end damage and Peters was sent to the back of the pack for his role in Perrin's demise. Dana Aikins challenged on the final lap but settled for second in front of Shane Ray, Jeff Welsh and Pete Stapper.
Dave Watchorn of North Gower also was the benficiary of problems in front of him as two cars got together in the Rookie feature as well. Watchorn was handed the top spot and went the distance for his first win of the year just edging Brad Kirkland, who finished right on the winners back bumper. Martin Walter, Dave Blue and Billy Woodward Jr. were third through fifth respectively.
Brockville Ontario Speedway returns to action on Wednesday night at 7 pm with the usual go Kart event. Regular racing resumes next Friday night at 7:30 with a full program plus an appearance by the Midstate Vintage Stock Car Club.
