Yellow, the colour of the night at Brockville
BROCKVILLE-It was a yellow night at Brockville Ontario Speedway. Numerous yellow flags were the story of the night during all but the rookie feature. It was also big yellow, Hurricane Steve Paine, of Waterloo, New York in victory lane for the first time in 2004 at the Beast of the East, taking the win in the 30 lap Big Block Modified feature.
Paine used his traditional low groove to climb through the field between caution flags, finally getting by a determined Bryan Rogers on a restart in the early going. Paine, then survived all the yellows to wheel his yellow TEO chassis into victory lane. Pat O Brien was second in front of the top small block another yellow car driven by Kingston's Danny O Brien. Jeff Sykes and Rogers both in small blocks rounded out the fast five. Less than half of the cars that started the feature were around at the finish.
Paine said the key was changing the set up on his car. "We've been trying to run a brand new set up on one of the oldest cars in our stable. We changed it back to the way, we used to run it and it worked alot better tonight."
The Sportsman 20 lap main wasn't much different with some crashing and banging taking out a number of cars early in the race. Kyle Dingwall scored his second straight feature win with a second half race charge going by a fading Randy Earl with 8 laps to go. Ben Tucker was second followed by Jason Potter, Earl and Kees Van Winden.
Dave Wilgosh's string of bad luck and mechanical problems came to an end in the 20 lap Street Stock event. Wilgosh went from flag to flag for the feature win, his first of the year. A fast closing Billy Code finished in the number two spot trailed by Pete Stapper, Jim Peters and Jack Code.
The quickest feature of the night was run by the Rookies. Brad Kirkland and Bob Ray raged a torrid battle for the lead for a number of laps before Ray blasted away for the win. Kirkland settled for second with Joseph Banks the only other car on the lead lap.
Brockville Ontario Speedway returns to action next Friday with a full race program in all four divisions plus Big Rig time trials. The green flag drops at 7:30. The Speedway's go kart track will be center stage again on Wednesday evening.
