Poirier goes into history books as first Modified winner of new era at Beast of the East

Brockville: Quebec's Steve Poirier issued in a new era of racing at the Brockville Ontario Speedway on Friday night. Poirier took the first Big Block Modified feature at the Beast of the East taking the lead on the first lap and leading all the way in the special 50 lap season lid lifter at the fast quarter mile oval.

Poirier, who hadn't competed at the B.O.S. started on the outside pole but blew by Steve Paine on the first lap for the top spot. Paine would challenge now and then and even had a couple of restart opportunities but didn't have the answers for Poirier. Poirier admitted in victory lane that he had recieved some tips about the best way around the Brockville track from former BOS standout Stephane LaFrance that he put to good use.

Paine settled for second about a half straightaway behind at the checkered followed by the brothers O'Brien from Kingston, first Pat and then Danny. Mike Adderley was fifth.

Kyle Dingwall started on the pole and led all 20 laps in the Sportsman main event. Tim VanBrocklin held off a late charge from Kees Van Winden to finish second with Tim Alton and defending track champ Ben Tucker rounding out the fast five.

Dana Aikins charged through the field in the early going and scored an impressive win in his maiden voyage at Brockville taking the Novice event. Robin Perrin, who's wife had given birth to a child at 4:30 in the afternoon celebrated the birth with a heat win and a second place run in the feature go round. Shane Ray, Bill Code and Pete Stapper were third through fifth respectively.

Billy Woodward Jr. took advantage of a mid race mechanical problem that felled early leader Bob Ray and captured the 12 lap Rookie event. Dave Blue was second followed by Joseph Banks, Stuart Mullin and Don Hall.

Brockville Ontario Speedway returns to action on Wednesday night, May 19th with the first event at the new go-kart track constructed in the infield of the quarter mile oval. Regular racing resumes next Friday night with a full race program, May 21st at 7:30 p.m.
