HITCHCOCK CLAIMS WIN IN 400TH MODIFIED FEATURE RUN AT BROCKVILLE

BROCKVILLE-Perhaps it was fitting on the night where the 400th Modified feature was run at the Brockville Ontario Speedway, that a veteran took his first victory of the 2003 season. Kingston’s Mark Hitchcock turned laps in 14.4 second range en route to a convincing win on Friday night.

The victory also gave Hitchcock, a guaranteed starting spot in the 358 Modified division for Super DIRT Week in October in Syracuse. Hitchcock took over the lead from early leader Adam Moore and pulled out a large margin a couple of times. However, two late race cautions put the veteran to the test but he still managed to easily outdistance Stephane La France. Todd Stewart was a solid third followed by Boomer MacIntyre and points leader Lee Gill.

The race was red flagged on lap 2 after a scary incident involving Ron Evoy. Evoy, making his first start of the season, barrel rolled two and a half times in turn 3 to avoid the car of his teammate Randy Gaudet. Neither driver was injured and Gaudet was able to continue.

After just a weeks absence, Ben Tucker was back in the winners circle. Tucker blasted by Tim Alton on a lap 9 restart and led the rest of the way in the 20 lap Sportsman event. Lance Willix ended up third behind Alton, with Lance Willix, Dave Wilgosh and Lee Miller making up the rest of the fast five.

Peter Stapper also used a mid race restart to grab the lead and then held off a furious late challenge from Sheldon Hoogwerf for the Novice victory. Early leader Jason Riemersma in a borrowed car was third. John Simmons and Roger Bushey were fourth and fifth respectively.

The top 3 cars in the 10 lap Rookie main event were less than a car length in total apart at the stripe. Don Hall claimed a narrow triumph over a fast closing Billy Woodward Jr. and Dave Blue. Brad Kirkland ended up fourth in front of Stuart Mullin.

The Speedway will be back in operation on Friday Night, July 25th at 7:30 pm for full race program featuring all four divisions.
