THREE TIME DEFENDING TRACK CHAMPION KICKS OFF 2003 WITH A WIN AT BROCKVILLE

BROCKVILLE, ONT. -The three defending Modified track champion served notice that unlike the Los Angles Lakers he intends to try and make it four straight. Lee Gill tracked down his cousin Bill in traffic around the midway point of the 50 lap feature on Friday Night at Brockville Ontario Speedway and using the lapped car as a pick took over the top spot.

It was a done deal from then on as Gill picked up his 19th win in his last 39 appearances at Brockville. Jeff Sykes had a late charge and actually pulled to within a car length of Gill at one point before settling for a close second. Bill Gill was third after scorching the fast quarter mile oval with a sub 14 second lap as track conditions were exceptional on opening night. Early leader Boomer MacIntryre and Keith Dingwall rounded out the fast five in the Modified division. 20 Modifieds were in competition on opening night.

Ben Tucker who decided to refocus his efforts in the Sportsman division for 2003 got off to a great start. Tucker started on the pole and led all 20 laps enroute to the victory. Young Chad Phelps was second getting close to the winner on a couple of occasions but not close enough to attempt a pass. Kyle Dingwall was third in front of Tim VanBrocklin and Jason Potter.

Defending Novice Champ Kees VanWinden started the year in style as well as he too started from the front row and led all 15 laps in grabbing the win. Peter Stapper made an impressive drive through the field of 20 cars to finish in the runner up spot. Ryan Poole, Charles Barkley and Robbie Ezard were third through fifth respectively.

Kurtis McPhee took over the car driven last season by track champ Danielle Legault. The results were the same as McPhee’s Honda blistered its way to a easy win in the Rookie class. Martin Walter came home second followed by Joseph Banks, Dave Blue and Dave Watchorn.

The Speedway returns to action with a full race program featuring all four divisions presented by Thousand Islands RV Friday Night, May 23rd at 7:30 pm.
