HURRICANE FINALLY PREVAILS IN RECORDER AND TIMES, HOT COUNTRY 100

BROCKVILLE, PO ... Steve Paine has been close at the Brockville Ontario Speedway in a number of Super DIRT Series events the last few years. This time the Hurricane warning went into effect early and lasted until the checkered flag flew on Friday night in the Brockville Recorder and Time, Hot Country Q 102.9 100.

More than 45 Modifieds converged on the fast quarter mile for the event with Frank Caprara setting fast time circling the track with a lap of 14.5 seconds. 30 cars took the green flag for the race part of the Turning Stone Casino Super DIRT Series for 358 Modifieds with Justin Haers on the pole.

Haers led for a number of laps until his Sweetner’s Plus stable mate motored by. Paine stretched out some good leads until traffic became an issue from time to time and Pat Ward arrived on his doorstep. Ward got close a couple of times but never was close enough to blow the Hurricane off course.

Meanwhile Danny Johnson was quickly working his way to the front, Johnson settled on the outside groove of the speedway and it brought him through the field. The caution flag flew on lap 92 for the final time putting Johnson right behind Paine for a final 5 lap shootout. With a capacity crowd going wild, Johnson pulled up beside Paine twice in the shootout, only to have Paine speed back into the lead with great runs off the bottom of turn 4.

Alan Johnson took advantage of that final restart to pick up two more spots to finish third. Three time Brockville track champ Lee Gill finished fourth followed by Ward. Vic Coffey recovered from two separate spins to manage 6th followed by Pete Bicknell, Todd Stewart, Haers and Jason Barney.

Kees Van Winden finished off the Novice track championship in style as he led most of the event that included more than 10 caution flags. VanWinden got passed on a mid-race restart by second place finisher Peter Raabe, but quickly retook the lead and held off Raabe the rest of the way. Shane Ray, Roger Bushey and Kurtis Lee rounded out the top 5.

Danielle Legault clinched the Rookie class track title with yet another consistent run. The lady from Cornwall finished second to Roch Aubin in the season finale. Bill Woodward Jr. was third with Brad Kirkland grabbing third in the final points with a fourth place finish.

It was all Tim Van Brocklin in the 20 lap Sportsman event. Van Brocklin started on the front row and led all the way easily outdistancing Lance Willix. Dave Wilgosh was a solid third in front of Tim Alton and Jason Riddell.

Brockville fans also took part in a moving tribute to the victims of the September 11th tragedy. A passing of the helmets at intermission collected over 11 hundred dollars for the United Way of Leeds-Grenville.

The season will close on Sunday afternoon, September 15th at 2pm with the annual Kanes Towing Monster Enduro. The Enduro for the first time will feature a 150 lap event for 8 cylinder cars and a brand new 50 lap 4 cylinder Enduro.
